    This is to be expected. Who would want to bring a child into this new Gilead? Women are loading up on contraceptives and abortion pills (abortions are up after Dobbs).

    Sad state of affairs. We are fortunate to have a large immigrant population. Otherwise we are on a Japan like path.

    U.S. birth rate drops to record low, ending pandemic uptick

    I am totally lost with all the definitions as to peoples "sexual preferences". I guess whatever "turns one on" may be defined by that person
    with some strange sounding noun. As a caucasian male, American men have been
    neutered to the point I'm suprised there is even "sexual procreation" resulting in child birth anymore.

    I guess type "A" personality men had it coming. I won't argue that point.

    "Who would want to bring a child into this new Gilead"
    This is actually quite the profound statement IMO. Indeed - "Why"?

    * Americans are confronted with a crumbling form of Gov't., ultra partisanship and of course overwhelming greed.
    * American strategic interests are under growing threat in many sectors abroad.
    * Criminal Enterprise is now "business as usual" at the Gov't level. (By both parties and independants).
    * Various wars or conflicts in the world.
    * Wealth concentration and economic stratification continues to "grow".
    * Unaffordable housing.
    * Climate Change.
    * Media out of control, pushing partisanship or aligning with private interests pushing specific agendas.
    * Oh - COST - it's EXPENSIVE to have children in the good ole USA.

    To name ........... a few

    In my view, the American Experience has not been this threatened since the late 1960's. (Vietnam era)

    Interesting last sentence. I don’t know how old you are? I’m 71 and lived through the 60s. Some of my favorite times were during the 60s and 70s.

    fwiw I wouldn’t have children today. Too much uncertainty.

    and of course their rationale is if abortion and birth control are banned, problem solved. Not that simple, control freaks.

    The take-charge types who thrived in the 20th century, when WW2 era military culture kept a strong hand in private sector management, would all be in a rubber room today.

    IMO there were two alternate universes in the 60's. Flower Power, LSD, Rock and Roll and then the "on the ground" reality of
    the threat of Communist Expansion and totalitarianism around the world. Russia (Cuban missle crises) brought the grim reality
    home to all who were paying attention. Not that I was paying that much attention, I was a kid.

    I rarely agree with some of the posters above but on this issue we agree: None of them should procreate.

    I’ve got five grandchildren ages 5 and under. While I certainly have some concerns about the direction of the country, I can’t say I’m worried in the least about their futures.

    Because I don’t see why I would. They’re in great families with loving, involved parents. Already experiencing a variety of activities.
    They’re bright, interested and funny.
    And they have a darn good grandfather.

    Strikes me as another pandemic issue. Basically, a lot of measures had huge increases/decreases followed by a slight over-correction compared to the mean and will likely settle somewhere near the mean (accounting for longer-term trends) in the end.

    This is far from some type of new phenomenon.

    [IMG]

    Outside of the Baby Boom and the Covid spike, we've been trending down for generations. It's seems to be a natural societal reaction to the need for less children (due largely to the move from an agricultural-based economy and vastly improved infant mortality) and the increasing tendancy for people to desire financial stability and the means to provide their children with the tools and resources needed to compete in a modern first-world economy.

    You see it in all developed nations.

    India is about to cross below replacement rate, which will leave mostly only sub-saharan Africa with a growing population.

    [IMG]

    This is a hugely important topic. The effects on immigration, economics, and politics are playing out right in front of us and the solutions will require next level ideas and near impossible to imagine implementation.
