It was absolutely devastating. guys that we lost and guys that stayed with us will tell you we were negative recruited big time as not winning football games was what other coaches used over and over. Visibility, success, and kids now see the big picture in the future. Yes, they want money through NL, but most of them now understand it’s about the big picture in 3, 4 and five years down the road doesn’t look so bright when you’re not winning games.
As much as I hate to say it, he evaluated talent very quick and did it well. I think some of the key to getting transferred kids is not wasting a ton of time getting them on campus, etc. it sounds like our biggest problem has been that we need to evaluate tape and things of that nature. If a wedding tape is great and important, but has to be done in a timely manner and should not cause us to miss out on guys. Norvell was ahead of most on offers. Betheune, Fiske, Wilson, Coleman, Benson, and plenty of others were very quick offers. If you’re looking at record, it doesn’t look like anything we’ve done is working, but hopefully this will be our year to at least win seven or eight games. Have to beat Miami first. That’s all that really matters.
We aren't that far apart on a lot of opinions really. I think Napier is too deliberate as well. Where we seem to differ is on the fsu and Norvell praise. Norvell and fsu were still a mess in year two. Nothing they did to that point should have instilled confidence going forward and to top it off their facilities were lacking as well yet they started pulling talent. Some of those guys you mentioned were known talents like Benson. Not really diamonds in the rough the difference in my opinion (guessing) is that they made a concerted effort to focus their money on the portal since their recruiting was so sub par. I also think they benefitted greatly from their schedule and timing of some of their bigger games. They definitely got momentum going in every aspect up until the Travis injury. Conversely, we have not been able to catch a break in any way. Some of that was self Inflicted but some was just crap luck and timing. Point being Norvell was a joke until year 3. I'm willing to give Napier year 3 before making any comparisons to Norvell. I am also in the minority in that I don't care about how tough our schedule is this year. Georgia and Texas seem like juggernauts. Outside of those two every game should be winnable if we have truly made some progress.
They had a good defense and Travis was a difference maker. He got better every year and made plays. I still get a little pissed when I think of the 2022 game and how silly he made our defense look.
I have to disagree. NIL played a huge role in all this. I believe thats the most important element in recruiting.........what is your offer? does it match what others are offering? If the numbers are similar THEN record might play more of a role in recruits chosing schools. I believe 90-95% of top elite recruits its a bidding war. If you value what Saban the GOAT of coaches says thats the first thing the recruits ask .....Whats your dollar number?Virgina just voted in a law that will allow colleges to pay players directly not through the collectives, Pandoras box is not only opened but destroyed. What comes next, players union, collective bargaining? revenue sharing? The majority of ELITE players will go to the highest bidder.
I wonder what the professors for UVA would say when the university started paying football players at their school?
He did make us look silly but they had a healthy dose of holding no calls not to mention a blatant face mask on our own qb that was ignored at the end. Sapp literally had an fsu defender behind him using two arms to hold him at his chest that lead to points and yet no call was made.
You know the money still doesn’t come from the same pot. The athletic dept will continue to fund itself. Of course their booster system and fanbase will still be asked to do the heavy lifting. How much the teachers make really has nothing to do with anything. They have their own fundraisers.
FSU success was due to the transfer portal. Look at all their highly rated draft prospects. DE, DT, RB, and WR were all portal transfers. Norvell HS recruiting and development of own players is still suspect IMO. Even Travis was a transfer. Give Norvelle credit for portal recruiting.
Hoping for an answer to a question I have about NIL. Are they standard contracts, where, if I sign a deal and stay with the team, regardless of what the staff wants me to do(suggests I transfer), even if I don't see the field, more like eventually get passed on the depth chart, would I still be paid or, do we know there are stipulations in those agreements that require me to be active on the field, not just listed on a roster? Because NIL is a bogus thing with the idea that a person will be paid because of marketing and promotion done with their NIL, could an NIL even stipulate performance requirements? It could I suppose stipulate that money agreed on will be paid as long as their NIL is being used, which would give them an out if a staff no longer wanted that player on the team or indicated that player's role is not necessary, then proceed to eliminate that player from NIL use, which could then void the NIL arrangement.
Contracts can stipulate anything legal. They can be as broad or as narrow as the parties both want. You can make a contract saying you will be paid a retainer of $100,000 and live in Tuscon, Arizona for X number of days a year and be available for public appearances and autograph signing in and around Tuscon, if asked, no more than 5-days a month . . . and not make a single appearance (because you weren't asked) and still get the $100K for "being available." That's the way I understand the NIL agreements mostly work. I'm not sure though. I'd say performance bonuses would more likely to be included than performance requirements.
They can’t be tied to a school, playing time, or on field performance. Outside of that, like et said, you can structure the contract any way you want as long as you’re not asking either party to do something illegal. You can give someone a million bucks for a months worth of “availability” to do promotions or whatever. You can give someone 100 bucks to take a picture in front of your car once a year for four years. Don’t think you’ll find any takers on the latter deal, but don’t see any reason why it would be illegal. The contracts aren’t public, so it’s unlikely you’re ever going to get many legit details unless you’re personally involved in cutting the deal (no, contributions to a collective do not make you personally involved). Both sides will lie, publicly. Those paying the deals want you to think they’re paying less than they are. The agents cutting the deals want you to think they’re getting more than they are. The “media” and all their anonymous sources are as unreliable as your everyday forum numbnuts.
The schools don’t want to be employers. Right now they have the fanbases covering all the costs and all the labor. That, and most states don’t allow the schools to pay the athletes directly, so you’ll have to get laws changed too.
My understanding that the way most skirt the tie in to a school is having contractual obligations that pretty much require the player be in the location of the university. Wouldn't mean they have to be playing well, or even playing at all....but they couldn't play anywhere else either.
That’s the way I would do it and the way I’ve assumed it’s being done, but I’ve never been involved in one of these deals. Wonder how they skirt it for two schools in the same metro area.
It’s not even that complicated. It’s pay to play. It doesn’t seem much much as guaranteed at all and if they don’t want you, they can cut your money off. And if you get a better offer for more money, you can go play somewhere else.
