One player who always amazed me was Warren Spahn. He played for some < average Braves teams, except for that 2-3 year run in late 1950s. Yet won 363 games with a lifetime ERA of 3.09. Spahn did not throw much heat, the ball simply moved here there and yonder.

I remember him and Juan Marashal of Giants going head to head over 16 innings each and both not missing the next start.

If I was building a staff from that list, I would start with Bob Gibson & Whitey Ford, then add Roger Clemens and Steve Carlton, with Dennis Eckersley as my closer.

    That’s a great staff @ocalaman — I think I would go with
Bob Gibson, Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan, and Bob Feller. My closer would be John Smoltz.
If it was supposed to be a 5 man rotation then I would add Tom Seaver.

The Warren Spahn combo was with Lew Burdette. Lew led the Braves over the Yanks in the WS. Sain was with Spahn in the early 50s.

Warren Spahn had a home on the beach at Anna Maria Island. He would take a rubber raft out and row in the Gulf of Mexico for hours on end. His arm was made of that rubber. He could pitch for hours, innings and days on end.

My choice of starters would be: Right- Bob Gibson, Nolan Ryan and Don Drysdale. Left- Warren Spahn and even if not on list Koufax. If on list, Mickey Lolich. I dont need a reliever.

I knew some old timers and they said that Walter Johnson was the fastest. Faster than Feller. That is probably true because I have read that early in his career Walter Johnson only threw fastballs because he didn't need a second pitch. He wasn't fooling anybody. It was hit it if you can. I would have him on my staff.

I would take the Steve Carleton that was pitching in 1972. That was the most incredible year ever for a pitcher.

I might take Greg Maddux but not with the current strike zone so he is a "no". Hard not to take Nolan Ryan instead.

Now for the weird pick: Tim Wakefield. After seeing those guys seeing Wakefield would be jarring. Eddie Cicotte would be another but he had a lifetime ban and also threw a shine ball (legal at the time) along with his knuckler. If his shine ball was grandfathered in and his lifetime ban was lifted (maybe it is because he is dead) I would take him over Wakefield.

Eck out of the pen is a no brainer.

Love all the Cards on the list, but I'd trade Clemens for Mickey Lolich.

Now I'd have two lefties, and three pitchers who put up K's from a 10-inch mound. (The Eck is tall enough that the mound doesn't factor)

I actually asked, many years ago, the HOF catcher and former manager of Indians and White Sox, Al Lopez who was the fastest pitcher ever? I thought he would say Koufax (in his youth), Steve Barber, Nolan Ryan or Bob Feller. He said in baseball, every body knew it was Walter Johnson. We know today with technology that Nolan could hit 102-105 mph with today's radar gun measuring from near release vs at home plate. I guess WJ would be a 103-107 mph pitcher. I think WJ was also more side arm.

I would take Niekro over Wakefield. His K per numbers are lower, but that could be explained by how long we pitched. He was who I wanted to meet growing up.
