Just awful all around. The 81 year old had been getting threatening phone calls from a scammer claiming they had kidnapped a relative and demanding money. The scammers apparently tried to use an Uber delivery driver, who didn't have any connection to the scam, to pick up and deliver a package at the old man's house that the scammers believed would have the money.

It's apparently recorded on the Uber driver's dash cam. He shot her multiple times and killed her. Charged with murder because the police said the Uber driver made no threatening moves that could invoke self defense.

The person setting up the scam/prank needs to be found and charged as well.

That doesn’t absolve the old man, he’s responsible for his own actions. But the person setting it up caused the whole thing.

I agree. If possible, they should be charged with murder, too. Unfortunately, I think a lot of these scams are run by people from outside the country, so they may be impossible to find.

God this sounds like the premise of a horrible movie. A true nightmare scenario for all involved.

Not to make light of this, but did the 81 year old have to use a gun that looks like a wild west pistol from well, 1881

Wow - that photo. Hammer back, finger on the trigger, woman walking away. This must be immediately before she was shot. Faces of Death stuff

In the video I saw he had already shot her in the leg. she was backing up and asking for help. He then shot her twice off camera and killed her.

Sad state of affairs but these kinds of stories are to be expected in gun violent America. I’m surprised that old ass Yosemite Sam pistol still works.

Just a sad set of circumstances. He has the drop on her already and she's old. He should know what being old is like. Despite him being old, too, he 100% has the upperhand and there's no reason to pull that trigger. Speaking of which, I'm surprised a flag didn't come out that said "Bang!"

Yeah, what did he have to fear at that point? He could be impaired due to old age, meds, or dementia. A family member should have taken his guns or ammo away before LE was forced to.

Likely because his lizard brain, however diminished, was marinated in the danger presented from people that look like her.

If gramps is sharp as a tack, he can keep his cartoon gun. I have no problem with the elderly being able to defend themselves. (That's not what happened here, obviously) I guess the question is when to disarm an elderly family member that is impaired. At like what level of impairment? I've never really thought about it.

may not have been racial at all. maybe just fed a steady diet of "crime is out of control! we're in danger! better have a gun! it's OK to shoot!"

Those two are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they usually overlap. "Crime" has many meanings depending on how presented.

Me neither but this photo, the description of his actions, and the look on his face made me ponder that question. Similar to the question of when to take the car keys from our parents, that time will arrive at different times for different people. He would have benefited from a loving family member doing that for him. Family members would be the best arbiters of this.

Plausible. What if the scammer is from Bangladesh? This poor lady was an unknowing money mule. I hope investigators can track down the scammer. He needs to be locked up.

Who knows but I wouldn’t be shocked if it was some dude glued to Fox News all day and felt he was in constant fear for his life, and then gets scanned to boot.

Gun advocates think it’s great to have one, or 10, guns for self defense, but the issue is most times you probably don’t need a gun, but if you have one you bring it into the situation and it can either escalate or you end up feeling you need to use it. I know of several instances where guns have needlessly escalated things. Luckily nothing came of any of them.

Always a tough call for any family to make. Most seniors' greatest fear is losing their independence, but at a certain point they may not be capable of being on their own in a safe way. Obviously never met the guy, but it's too bad he was confronting and then killing someone in his driveway instead of waiting for wheel of fortune to conclude so he could go to bed for the night.

Last month, an 81-year-old Ohio man fatally shot an Uber driver he thought was trying to rob him after receiving scam phone calls, according to authorities.

The man had been receiving calls from someone pretending to be an officer from the local court who demanded money. The Uber driver had been told to retrieve a package from the man’s home, a request authorities say was possibly made by the same scam caller or an accomplice.

The staggering losses to older Americans are likely an undercount. Only about half of the more than 880,000 complaints reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center last year included information on the age of the victim.

The answer to this epidemic of senior scammers is obvious

BTW, I completely agree with random pan I found. Doesn’t mean it’s not pure enjoyment.

One other thing. Anyone find this particular timeframe selected suspicious - is this a bit of cheekiness?

Federal investigators saw an uptick between May and December of scammers using live couriers to take money from victims duped into believing their accounts had been compromised, according to the FBI.
