I've downloaded the UF play by play for the year to analyze the foul calls. To determine whether a string of calls in a game is statistically valid, I need a standard for comparison. I think people would prefer consistent as much as right. If you’re gonna let one guy bully his way to the rim, you gotta let the other guy too. If you’re gonna call ticky tacky touch fouls, call them both ways. Call it the same no matter the score. Call it the same no matter how much time is on the clock.
I heard Rick Pitino say earlier this year that there are about 12 bad calls per game, and it’s about 6 for each team.
Two trains of thought. The first is there should be a standard and keep it that way for at least each half. Call them that way and not one way. The other is if they call a very tight game, one team may not have the depth and so they play more cautious or they lose players. I prefer to keep the game simple and let the teams decide whether they want to play chess or MMA.
One thing that might be misleading in the article is the Pomeroy ratings of officials. It is not based on how well they call games. Instead it is based on how "big" the games are that they call. One could make the argument that only good refs get to call big games but we all know that isn't true.
There are bad calls…. And then, there are egregiously bad calls at pivotal moments. We have seen a few of the latter. The reality is… there are officials objectively bad at their job, but are not fired. I’ll never know how Pat Adams is still in the game.
There's more of that had to be a foul but at my angle I really couldn't see so just blow some hot air thru this here little whistle! That's in All games! Basketball is not a no contact sport. I think it should be atleast 85% correct .
I don’t know how many of you saw the Creighton versus Tennessee game last night, but Creighton was down four with a few minutes to go, and a ball went off the hand of a Tennessee player. However, the ref called it off of Creighton. That was a game changer. The end of game bad calls by refs is mind blowing. They affect the outcomes of the games and they are constantly happening. There has to be a better way to deal with it, especially when, within seconds, various TV camera angles can show that the error was made.
It wasn’t in the last 2 minutes of the game. There were 3 or so minutes left. The absurdity to me is that the TV announcers showed a replay within seconds that clearly showed the ball going off of the hand of the Tennessee player. So, why not immediately reverse the call without the on court refs needing to look at the play?
