I know there are many Gators who love to fish as much as I do! Let's have a thread where we can share fishing stories, pictures, and helpful hints to all good Gators and friends!
We all love good "fishing tales," pun intended!
Where do you fish? What do you catch? Baits? Boats? Tricks? :) Maybe you could even "hook up" some friends to fish together!
Let's go fishing! http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d68/G8Rpmc/image002MA20778305-0011-1.gif
(Thanks Hoops, Rella, Skie, Bari and of course vanders and others! You guys are great! Go Gators! I love ya!)

Allright... its back!!!
Well, here is my report from last saturday....
Went out with two buddies hoping to find some kings for the smoker. The kings did not cooperate, so we hit a few deep wrecks. We ended the day with a snowy grouper, a bonito, short snapper... and some dolphin that saved the trip.
We kept a flat line out while bottom-fishing and it got hit. About an 8lb phin came to the boat and brought his buddies with him. Most were 12-15lbs. We hooked the biggest of the bunch... likely pushing 20lbs, but my buddy lost him. We still landed 3 nice ones... and had some dolphin dinner for the SEC Chmapionship game.
Crummy sea condition for the next few days... so I am stuck on land. But here are a couple pics from Saturday:

Thanks PMC for remaking the best thread on GC!
Man has the weather sucked lately in north central florida, every weekend it is like small craft advisory. I am really chomping at the bit to catch up on some red fishing.

Thanks Hoops and Rella! :) Thanks for the welcome back Bari! :)
Hoops, I bet that really was some great tasting fish!
Husband has been out, but hasn't caught much. He might try to go fishing this weekend. If he can't get out in the boat, then he might go wading to catch some reds and trout.
I have some Christmas shopping to do. Bass Pro might be a good place to start. :)

Hi Chuck! I did have an amazing time in Atlanta! My seat was so high, the players looked about an inch high! :) The Gator win definitely made the trip even more exciting!
My husband and son fished in a father/son tourney on Sat, but finished in time to make it home to watch the game. The weather and the tide (not much water during the morning hours) so they didn't take the boat out. They put on their waders and caught a few trout.
They didn't stay for the end of the tourney. They wanted to make it home for the game and they are really glad they did! :)

What's the over/under on how long this thread takes to get back to 1,000?
Unfortunately, I haven't made it out since moving to Texas. Hopefully I can get out soon and have something to show for it.
Hoops - There are very few people that I'm jealous of. You, my friend, are one of them. I wish I could catch a tenth of the stuff that you reel in.

Wow .... can honestly say I've never seen anything like what Hoops reeled in. Seeing those pictures makes me want to get out on an ocean and try fishing there. lol
I've only ever fished in lakes, ponds, etc. And I generally fish for bass, bluegill, crappie and sometimes catfish. So while it's fun for me, not really anything y'all would be interested in seeing. :)

And please post your pics!
More than anything, I love bass and freshwater fishing. Peacock bass are among my favorite fish of any I have ever caught... fresh or saltwater.
And finesse fishing for bass, crappie etc often takes more skill than a lot of big saltwater species. The dolphin in the above pic, for example, swim in schools and are voracious. When you hook one, they tend to follow/stay with the hooked fish. So from there, it is just a matter of pitching baits and reeling them in. They are tremendously strong and acrobatic, but no too smart or shy!
I am a freshwater angler first... always will be. So I would love to see some of those reports.

Awww, thanks Chuck and Hoops!! Y'all make me feel better about my lil' ole' fishing. lol
I spent Thanksgiving Day out on a public lake, mostly just to relax as it wasn't a good day for fishing, but still caught two big bluegill. Haven't been fishing again since then, though. Need to get back out there soon. :) Meanwhile, here are a few pics from two of my fishing trips...
This is the smallest bass I have ever caught -- and yes, it was caught on a hook. lol

Thanks for resurrecting this thread, for purely selfish reasons...
I was headed over to the pub the other day in search of this thread and saw that it had been pruned along with everything else. After expressing extreme disappointment, I decided to keep an eye out in case it was recreated. Much to my enjoyment I now see that it lives again. So without further ado:
I'm here to mine a little information from the obviously very knowledgeable posters frequenting this thread. First a little background information. I grew up from ages 4 - 18 on a lake in northern Minnesota and spent my summers fishing for Walleye to eat. Caught lots of Northern Pike and some Muskie (catch and release type stuff) and some occasional pan fish. Mostly we were trolling with artificial lures. Sometimes using bobbers or cast fishing, but those were exceptions. And yes, sometimes sitting over a hole in the ice watching a bobber. After leaving home I fished intermittently at various locations, but never to the extent while growing up and never in the South.
Well, fast forward many years and that brings us to today. I've been living in Gainesville for the past 13 years and have never even attempted to put a line into the water. Just recently my neighbor expressed some interest in doing some fishing. He has 0 experience, so that makes me the resident "expert". Problem is, I know next to nothing about fish in this area.
I do have great interest in saltwater fishing (we had a huge Sailfish over the mantel growing up from my fathers earlier fishing days before we moved to MN) but to start with I'm interested in exclusively freshwater opportunities.
Does anyone have any tips for fishing around Gainesville. We will be relegated to shore fishing or small boat (kayak, canoe w/ maybe electric motor, etc. to start). I'll take any tips that anyone wants to offer up. I'd prefer to fish locations where the catch would be safe for consumption.
Thanks in advance. I look forward to getting back into realm of fishing.

tbatten,
Most of the lakes in and around Gainesville will hold largemouth. This time of year they get lethargic as the temp. drops.
Wherever you fish, make your presentation s-l-o-w. I use soft plastics.... stick worms and trick worms are both great when fished slowly.
I especially like the trick (whacky) worms... as they are fished without weight and slowly drift down. Then just the slightest twitch of the rod, reel a slight bit and repeat.
tbatten
12-13-2008, 03:13 PM
Any lakes I should avoid? either because of overfishing, overcrowding or general pollution?
I appreciate the advice so far, would they go deep to get more temperate water or still be along shore structures or foliage?

tbatten,
The best place to catch a bass in Gainesville is Lake Alice by a mile. I went there and
caught an 11lb bass, it was awesome! That lake is just full of bass and gators.
But unfortunately, it is also trespassing so I almost got arrested :), fortunately the cop was a fisherman, and after I told him I caught that lunker and threw it back he let us off the hook.
Lake Alice is pretty high stakes, for safer less stressful fishing I would drive down to Rodmans Damn and you can go down the Ocklawaha which might be the most scenic river in FL.

Rella.... I thought I was the only one who did that!! :)
My cousin actually has a picture of my scrambling to unhook a Lake Alice bass as a Gator approaches in the background!
Anyway.. I got out fishing today. We hit our new top secret wreck! :)
It was loaded with fish. We caught tons of big AJs, Almacos and Bonito. We had a sailfish turn on a bait, but then cruise away. We had few toothy critters break us off... a couple big ones we had hooked for a short while (we suspect a wahoo) and a big grouper straighten the hook on us.
We did not take many pics... but this almaco had some nice colors, so we snapped one.

I had a great day offshore this last Friday, it was probably the best weather day in the month of December EVER! It was variable winds and in the mid 70's and just a perfect day weather wise. We went off about 30 miles to our favorite grouper spot, threw out the buoy on a good looking rock, then dropped the anchor. Then we had one of the most ferocious groper bites I can remember, it was like they hadn't eaten in weeks. We caught 18 keepers in 2 hours and made it back to the dock at 1pm. I really think we could have reeled in 40 if we stayed around, but 18 is an insane amount of grouper fillets. We have been handing them out to all of our friends for Christmas presents :) Just an outstanding day on the water. I will get pics posted when I get them.

Nice day Rella!!
I took my brother-in-law out fishing today. Beautifil day on the water, but fishing was so-so. Our first drop produced a triple header of AJs (15-20lbs). After that, the bite slowed and we moved to the inside reef. We caught 8 or so short grouper and a Cuda, before deciding to move out deep again.
We were about to call it quits when the deep rod doubles over. We fought it for 15 minutes or so, thinking it was nice BIG grouper.
Nope.
It was a shark. I have caught contless sharks, but this was the first TIger Shark caught on my boat. So, I would have preferred a grouper... but it was pretty cool to see.
It was probably somewhere between 80-100lbs.

PMC - for some reason black drum , when you touch them, expel a portion of their lower digestive tract - if you get my drift. Put them in the icechest and look in 2 minutes - its no longer expelled.
Up here is Beaufort S.C. - about half way between Charleston and Savannah. We have a 60 day "shrimp baiting" season in the fall where we are allowed a 48 quart ice chest of shrimp per day. They are caught by cast net - mostly at night - in shallow (2-6 ft ) water. Lots of fun and a good excuse to be on the water at night and drink beer and tell stories.
I usually put 150 - 200 quarts in the freezer every year - use them for Xmas/birthday gifts for the kids and friends - plus we eat them about twice a week

My favorite shrimp dish - outside of fried - is Fra Diavolo.
INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)
1 (16 ounce) package linguini pasta
1 pound cooked and peeled shrimp
8 cloves crushed garlic
2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes with garlic
2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
2 fluid ounces red wine (optional)
Add to Recipe Box

Add to Shopping List
Add a Personal Note
DIRECTIONS
Peel and cook shrimp if necessary, and place in a bowl of cold water.
Place tomatoes, crushed garlic, red pepper flakes, and wine in a 3 quart sauce pan. Simmer over low heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
While sauce is simmering, cook linguini according to package directions. When pasta is almost done, drain shrimp and place in the bottom of a large colander. Drain the pasta over the shrimp. Transfer pasta with shrimp to a large serving bowl, and toss together with some sauce. Serve remaining sauce on the side.
Who is the "Red" in your signature - looks familiar.

Finally ventured back over for a bit.... lol
Thanks for the kind words on my pics, Hoops and PMC!! Much appreciated. :) Seeing this thread, reading the stories and seeing all the new pics is making me want to get back out on the water again soon! lol I haven't been lately, but the past couple of trips weren't very successful -- more of just a day to relax by the water than anything. :)
My primary fishing buddy is now down in Gulf Shores with his son for the week and has been fishing some. Unfortunately, when he called yesterday he said they're still "fishless." lol Hopefully they'll have a successful trip soon, but he said he thinks it's because he doesn't have his good luck charm (me) down there. He always outfishes me when we go together, so as far as he's concerned, I'm a good luck charm. lol
Maybe I can get back to the lake sometime soon and try again. :) I just love getting out there, even when I don't catch anything.
nbft -- Great pics!! Those shrimp look very nice. It must be great living in an area where you can catch so many and have such fun with it. :) Good to see a pic of a black drum, too! One of my fishing buddies has mentioned catching them in the past, but that's the first time I've seen one.

I went fishing out of Waccassaa this last wednesday and had a great day. We were polling around on our favorite spot and there were just redfish everywhere! It is great when you can look out and see like 6 different reds tailing and just feeding like crazy, it makes the fishing just so exciting. We caught 10 legal sized reds kept three and released the rest including two monster twin 34'' reds which crashed our Excaliburs right after sunrise (pics below).
We also had something interesting happen. While I was in the back of the boat polling a tail popped up about ten feet away from me and since my two buddies were in the front of the boat locked in on a couple reds, I decided to go ahead and catch it. It was a nice 23.5 '' red, which filled out our limit of 3 reds. AT LEAST 30 minuets later my buddy reeled in a beautiful 26 3/4'' red. Torn because we had filled our limit 30 minutes earlier we were just about to release this beautiful red when we hear a fish flipping in cooler. So I open the cooler and decide it is at least worth a shot at reviving him, although we realized it was a long shot at best. And much to our surprise after I worked on him for about 45 seconds he swam off! We couldn't freaking believe it. So we got to keep the big one, and that my friends is the tale of the luckiest redfish in the history of redfishing. The sucker was on ice for at least 30 min probably more and lived, AMAZING.

Has anyone used a lure called a Bite Light? Apparently it is a lure with a red light that flashes only when it is in the water, and the fish think it is a wounded bait and eat it. Cool idea for a fishing lure, maybe a little gimmicky for my taste as I usually stay away from the "as seen on tv" products especially with fishing. But the lure was at least affective enough to be banned in Wyoming, and I just wanted to see if any of you have used it. Here is a link to the article I read about it.

Went fishing yesterday... kinda frustrating day. I took a friend out who is down for the game. First drop hooked into something HUGE. Battled for a few minutes then cut off clean. I suspected a big Wahoo, but not sure. Next drop, another hook-up. Bring the fish to the boat expecting AJ or Bonito... instead, WAHOO!! By the time I reached for the gaff, it gave a boatside headshake and threw the hook.... UGH!!! I will not make that mistake again.
After that we got a yellowtail snapper. The wind picked up and pushed the seas to 4+ ft. My buddy started turning green, so we went in.

Got out today with my cousin and a fishing buddy. We had a pretty fun trip. Our first drift produced a couple big AJ's and an almaco jack. After that, the wreck bite became quiet so we moved to a different spot. On the way we spotted hundreds of flying fish getting pushed around by big (10-12lb) bonitos. Several boats were chasing them and pitching baits to no avail, so we tried something different. We threw back 2 real small lipped rapalas (size i would use bass fishing) and trolled them on very light tackle. Sure enough, it worked. They are not edible, but we had a blast catching them on the small spinning rods. We caught 11 and cut up 3 for bait. We also landed a nice ranbow runner which will be dinner tomorrow.
After that we hit the reef and caught a keeper snapper, short grouper, a couple squirrel fish and a moray eel. UGH!
Between the AJs and bonito, plenty of bent rods.
It was fun....
Here are a few pics. There must have been water on the lens.. as these are very blurry.

2 mutton snapper, 1 bonito, 1 blue runner, 1 remora, 1 octupus, 1 seagull

Octopus are really cool to catch, they crawl all over the boat, really neat but you gotta watch out for that beak if you like having all of your digits though. I always want to make sushi out of them when we catch them, but my pops wont let me.
Seagulls on the other hand are a major pain in the @ss, and pelicans are even worse, but at least they put up a better fight :joecool:

If you want to see something really funny toss a pellican a frozen bait fish. We were going through the locks in pt canaveral on our way out to go fishin when I was maybe 13. There was no live bait to be bought and we were late and had no time to catch live so dad just grabbed some frozen. Were were letting it sit out to thaw and dad tossed one to the pellican. Got out yesterday. . . and had decent action, if not a good day.
We did whiff on a few BIG fish.
We caught several speicies of throwback fish: squirrel fish, grunts, sand tile, short mutton snapper, short porgies, blue runners
Our dinner catches were a decent king for the smoker and a skipjack tuna that will be seared tonite.
Our big misses were likely large grouper, as we dropped down 7" grunts for bait. Whatever inhaled them, broked us off twice.
Our BIG fish of the day went to my buddy, who has really been wanting to hook and beastly Amberjack. Be careful what you wish for!! :)
We hit a few of my favorite wrecks. He missed a couple, but finally got a good hookset on one a bit away from the structure. We moved the boat off the wreck... and the fight was on. After 15 minutes or so, and a lot of painful wincing from the angler... a 40+lb AJ came to the boat. My buddy collapsed to the deck holding his back, and his hand locked in the "fighting grip". But he was smiling!
I will post a couple pics on Monday...

Went out on Saturday and had a good day. It was 35 degrees in the morning with very dense fog, about 20-30 feet of visibility. Once the fog lifted and it warmed up it was a beautiful day. The fish were very lethargic and were not feeding like they usually do. But despite that we managed to catch 7 slot sized reds. The two we kept were 25 inches, and will be blackened along with a couple of steaks tomorrow, yum.

He caught it on a rather light rod that we use for deep jigging, and pulled the fish away from a wreck. For whatever reason, those wreck fish seem even stronger!

I went out on Sunday after some redfish, really hoping to put my dad on a good one. It was cold, windy and the tides were bad for what we wanted to do, but we made the best of it. We still did alright, caught our three fish limit of reds including this one below which was 26 inches.
The best part of bringing my dad is that the man can't do anything without cooking (fine by me) so he brought a little weber grill with us on the boat. So at lunch time when the tide was dead low and fishing wasn't ideal we stopped on a little bar and made some lunch. We filleted one of the redfish we caught and had redfish sandwiches, grilled shrimp we brought from home and some fresh oysters I picked out of the water. Needless to say it was the best meal I have ever had while fishing (I am not counting Cabbage Key bc it’s a restaurant). All in all it was a good day.

Here are the pics from Saturday. We were sight casting to big reds all day long, it was pretty much awesome, an epic day. We caught six which were over slot, and 3 in the slot. The big one my buddy caught was 41 inches, and between 25-30 pounds, he was the fattest red I have ever seen, he must have been slap full of roe. The fish took the bait about 10 feet away from the boat in about a foot of water, and as you can imagine we were kinda excited when he sucked the bait in. I polled after him to catch up, at that time we didn't know how big he was. When he got a little closer to the boat and went broadside we saw how big the sucker was, very exciting stuff.

We were fishing between the Waccasassa River and Cedar Key (due west of Gainesville). I have fished a bit in the Mosquito Lagoon & Banana River area, and they do catch them that big down there. But in my area they don't seem to get much above 15 lbs or so for whatever reason. I do a ton of red fishing after hunting season and before the pelagic species get to our area (May), and we have for years now. But We have never seen a red of this size, not even within 15 lbs of this one. Crazy.

Rella-
Tampa Bay area is so big its hard to point you right without knowing wheterh you are bringing a boat or whatever. Heres what I know. In Clearwater proper, your best bet may be the deep residential canals if the water temp stays cold like it has been. Lots of folks catch good trout and reds warming along the seawalls. Gulp baits worked SLOW!
On the south side of the Skyway, Bishop's Harbor is a good bet as well but if you dont know the area proceed with caution (you prob do anyway fishing Cedar Key area).
Just across the Gandy bridge is Weedon Island. Great place to get out and wade or canoe - near the island is no motor. On the south side of the island there are some cuts and drop offs that usually hold trout and reds.
Good luck. I'm going to Isla Mujeres with the wife and sons (10 and 5) for 4 days of sailfishing. Captian had 35 bites one day last week before the full moon! I am stoked.

Went fishing this morning and had a pretty good trip. . . we caught 7 good sized amberjacks before getting too tired and moving to the reef. There we got a couple snapper and a few short grouper. We got a few big triggers, which we kept and ate for the first time. I just finished grilling and eating it.... surprisingly very good!!! But those things are a pain in the azz to fillet!
We also got a few bonito and some almaco jacks.
We lost a few big fish on the wrecks. . . probably bruiser AJs.
Here are a couple pictures of what it looks like to get your butt kicked by an AJ!

Just got back last evening from Isla Mujeres, Mexico. AWESOME sailfishing. My wife, 10 year old and 5 year old all caught their firsts. On my last day (they took a breather) we caught 17 of 25 sails. Also caught 2 wahoo in the 40-50 lb range.
Now I am back to this cold weather - wow. I would highly recommend Isla for couple or family travel. Locals are great. Easy to get to and inexpensive. Air on Jet Blue from Tampa was under $200 rt, a decent room (we werent in it much) was $150 nt. Taxi from Cancun to Puerto Juarez ferry was $50 and ferry across to Isla was about $3 pp. The boat and mate will run you about $2K per day.
Food is cheap and very good, as are the cervezas.
Best part is most of the boats were from Texas, Carolinas and Georgia. They loved all our gator gear!

All dead bait trolling with circle hook balyhoo. These guys use dredges that are sick. Up to 40 mullet and/or balyhoo on each side along with squid chains. Most of the fish came up on the chains and we were able to drop back to them and watch them eat.
No live baiting in Isla. Our capt. never live baits anyway and prefers to dredge and troll even when fishing east coast Fl. tournaments.

very neat!!!!
The tourney guys here who put up big numbers dont do as much of that... mostly kites with numerous baits out. Im guessing it may be b/c those tourney are so packed . . . that trolling in and around hundreds of boats with kites... would not make you too popular. :)
Also, the stream runs so close here that the fish can be more concentrated... so maybe no need to burn feul to find them??
I have caught sails trolling illander/bally combos while dolphin fishing, but very few that way. Conversly... I have caught a lot of sails while live baiting for tuna and such.
I am not sure why it is so much more of a live bait game over here???
I have rarely gotten to see a sail chase down a trolled bait. It would be cool to fish the way you described!! Thanks for the report!
I'm guessing you did not get the hoo's on a circle hook/bally, right?
LittleBlueLW
02-20-2009, 05:56 PM
Caught the hoos the same way. Of course they have to short strike and hope not to catch any leader. Luck basically cause we were cut off numerous times. The larger hoo caught by my 10 year old probably would have broken off had there been an adult angler on the rod putting more pressure on. Leader had maybe 10 lbs strength left when the fish was gaffed.
Had a friend win a tourn. in Jupiter a few weeks back trolling dead baits. this tourn. was awarding double points for fish on dead baits. Caught the winning fish while rigger to rigger with the leader at the time.
I've heard all sides to the dead bait/live bait thing but havent done the live baiting thing personally. Seems like Stuart and south is live bait fishing and to the north is trolling?
The coolest part was seeing 5-10 fish at a time corralling and cutting through bait schools.

While gulf anglers wait for trout and grouper seasons to reopen, and for sheepshead to gather in earnest on their Big Bend spawning spots, local lakes continue to produce the best North Florida fishing action.
Even so, diehard inshore fans like Alex Rella, Zak Seymour and Bryce Poe have managed to keep frequent tight lines. The three Gainesville anglers have fished often enough to keep track of winter redfish in the chilly Waccasassa Bay shallows. Their trip to the bay last Saturday was the best of the season.
When they arrived, the water was calm and the tide was low, perfect for sight fishing. The reds were present and willing, and when the three fishermen headed for the boat ramp a bit after noon, 10 fish had taken the Gulp! Jerk Shads they cast with medium spinning tackle — four in the legal 18-to-27-inch slot and six well over 27-inches long.
The largest of these was Zak’s red-of-a-lifetime that measured 40 inches in length and had a 27-inch girth. He summed up the stellar catch up with a simple, “What a fish.”

I think you are correct on the Stuart south thing. I used to troll often... primarily for phins, but gas $$ changed tactics. But to the north, i know trolling is preferred method for sails, while here it is the live-bait/kites.
I actually love live baiting, b/c i can fish multiple rods at all different depths. I usually fish 6 rods . . .and at any time i can hook into anything from a sail, to a tuna, to a snapper.
But catching 17 sails and 40lb wahoo would have me trolling in no time!!! :)
That is awesome on the 'hoos. Must be some unreal fishing for a 40lb 'hoo to take a slow trolled or drop back dead ballyhoo!!!

Man you guys are so lucky to live in areas where you can target so many awesome species year round. Up here in the big bend all we have right now is red fish. Meanwhile in south florida you guys are wide open.
But if you get one big enough you can make the fishing report :nervous smile:
I guess you have to play the hand you are dealt.

The grass is always greener. . . I have been wanting to catch a red for years! I even took a private charter in Biloxi... thinking for sure i would get one. Nope!
In truth . . .we have seasonal fishing here to. Some species are year round, but different times definitely favor different fish. I am getting hammered by AJs for the next few months as the gather to spwan. The kings are scattered and the sailfishing is slowing down. April/May brings the start of our best dolphin run, and my favorite time for blackfins.
But no redfish! :(
I'll trade you a trip one of these days!!
Congrats on the article.... that is great! What a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hoops I hear you but let me tell you the species we have to do without in my area.
Dolphin
Tuna
Sailfish/Marlin
Snapper (inshore at least)
Snook
Permit
Tarpon (for the most part)
Bonefish
That is all I can think of off the top of my head, but you get my point. Just consider yourself lucky. But to make up for our shortcomings we have one of the best fisheries in the state for Grouper, Tipple Tail (no one seems to know about this), Trout (so I am told) and Redfish. So I mean we have species to target, but down in south fl it is so much better. Snook is my favorite fish to catch and I am about 100 miles too far north to fish them, but maybe that will change one day. I mean I am happy just to be able to have the means to fish, but you are in the SPORT FISHING CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. You are right though the grass is always greener......
Let me know if you ever want to catch a redfish. ;)

Thanks Rella! We have not been fishing in so long. I hope I can remember how to bait a hook! Hubby is at the Bonita Club tonight. Do you know where that is? Yankeetown.
He won't take the boat out tomorrow....too cold, etc. I think he and some buddies might do some wading to try to get some reds.
I can't believe those reds! I've never seen any in our area that big also. I'd have a heart attack if I landed one of those! Congrats!!!

Went fishin Sunday with some buddies, including HugeMatzo. Not a very good day. Fishing has been sloooow down here for several weeks. Sunday we had blue water, decent current . . .but cold water temps.
In addition, no live bait around so we settled for some less than quality dead baits.
We struggled, but managed a few fish. Our final talley:
3 short mutton snapper
1 legal vermillion snapper
3 squirrel fish (1 of which spiked the hell out of me!)
1 king lost at the boat
1 porgy
1 blue runner
4 short grouper
We lost what was likely a HUGE Goliath Grouper. We put down a 3lb runner on a deep wreck. Within minutes it was eaten. The last time we did this we pulled up a straightened hook. This time the x-strength hook held and so did the #7 wire. But the fish was too strong . . .and pulled us into the wreck.
Other than that short battle, most of the morning was unexciting. I am looking forward to some warm weather, southeast winds and the arrival of dolphin and tuna!!

Thats better than no fish for sure. Warm weather has got to be right around the corner. Cant believe I come back from flops and shorts in Mexico and have been freezing at nights again.
You guys ever run to the other side of the stream during spring and chase the yellowfins? I've done that the last couple years and talk about fun! Usually run over early one day, chase the birds for yellowfins, then either anchor on the far north tip of the Mantanilla shoal and bottom fish at night or run south and drift back north for swordies.
Man I cant wait.

Sorry it's been so long gang but... HOLY COW!!! those are some redfish Rella!!!
I dream of getting into some reds like that one day. Awesome fish bro!!! Great pics.

Update from isla mujeres. Cousin rode back from Mexico with the Floridian and man did they wax the sails. They got to free dive while the sails were cutting bait schools and watch them hunt. I am very envious and apparently they have some good video I'll try to post somewhere.
One day they released 36 sails. Other days they stopped and did some bottom fishing and caught monster muttons and big blacks.

Although it was a better day for flying kites, my brother and I caught 12 reds and 1 magnum trout yesterday afternoon. The water here is really stained in spots from all the rain and there's still a lot of water running off into the bays. I think that's what had the fish jacked up - lots of bait flowing out of those little creeks and the marsh.
I picked up some new Costa's a few days ago - 580 lens. Even though it was windy yesterday, I could still see fish from my poling platform and the bow ... incredible. I swore I would nevery buy another pair of expensive sunglasses, but I'm very glad I did.
Did I mention that I'm really tired of 15-20 knot winds every day when I'm off work?

On a more disturbing note, a friend of mine showed me this horrible video (linked below). I wish I knew who the people in this video are bc I would like to remove their testicles so they can not reproduce. Anyway, I am not a PETA type person, but as a cat owner and a HUMAN I can not figure out for the life of me how someone could use a little kitten for bait. Just horrible, and they give us a bad name.

deebo....
I toss them back. They are one of the most fun fish to catch . . . but not great eating. A lot of people do eat them, and say they are great. In fact, most of the smoked fish dip you will eat in restraunts is from AJs. There is a huge commercial fishery for them.
But I filleted one and found a bunch of worms. . . and that was it for me. The worms are supposedly harmless and can be cut out, but I'd rather not!
I do sometimes keep almacos.
In fact... I caught and kept a couple last nite. They occassionaly have worms... but only near the tail. I stop the fillet before i get there.

Went fishing yesterday afternoon. We caught over 2 dozen big baits (pilchards). I thought for sure we would be catching tons of dolphin.
For 3+ hours we had a five-line spread . . . with baits at every depth. And hardly any got touched. I did hook one dolphin that spit the hook at the boat, and we lost a big fish that hit the deep rod.
Surprisingly - - we caught 6 fish, all on deeps jigs. Fish were eating metal and leaving live bait to swim freely?!?!?
Total count...
2 small blackfin... perfect sushi -size!
2 alamco jacks
1 bonito
1 blue runner

My buddy caught an 18 1/2" spotted sea trout and as he was pulling it into the boat he exclaimed, "biggest one I've ever seen". I hooked up at that moment and dragged a 19 1/4" trout onto the boat (and laid it in his lap) before he could get his off the hook.
He put one under his left leg and one under his right. We ran out of shrimp 5 minutes later. Fished in Tampa Bay, on an incoming tide, at about 6 this evening.

Nah. . . we did not get the AJs on the light spinning tackle. But we did try... as 50+lber followed a hooked bonito to the boat. WE pitched a 12# spinning outfit to it and the fight was on. But it was over a wreck in 180 feet... and this thing smoked that reel so fast it was ridiculous! It got down 180ft and into the wreck... and game over.
Here is a video clip of an AJ from that day. I was vertical jigging, which requires a light rod to get the proper jigging action.
I use 60# braid with a floro leader of similar strength. The issue is that the rod/reel combo is pretty light, so you can get pulled into the wreck pretty quick if you don't turn the fish.
The other fish (tuna, bonito, runners) we caught on light tackle, as the fish were boiling on the surface but dove deep whenever we approached. So we needed to go light so we could sling a lure into the frenzy. They were not big fish, so it just made it a bit sportier. Plus, they dont try to get you down into structure. They fight out and away.. so all you need is line capacity.
I do love fishing light tackle. . . but it drives some of my fishing partners crazy. I have lost a lot of big fish b/c of it. But I also landed very near line class world records for blackfin tuna and kingfish.
Anyway... here is the vid:

had an exciting, if not productive afternoon.
we started out poorly... losing a 20+lb dolphin 5 minutes into the fight and then losing a smaller one shortly after.
we did hook and fight a nice sail (80-90lbs) before he got his bill on the mainline and broke it.
after that we finally began landing some fish... starting with a bonito, then a blue runner, then 2 nice sized mutton snapper and finally a 15-20lb dolphin.
I caught the dolphin on very light tackle, so it was quite a battle.
I will post some pics soon....
good luck to anyone fishing this weekend! Post your reports!

my buddy has really been enjoying the video feature on his new camera. I think he feels like a fishing-show host!!!
Heree is a two-parter... as we turned off the first part when we thought the fish had a buddy with him.
We only landed the one... which is part 2.
Both a pretty boring, quite honestly!

Been fishin of course. Dolphin are everywhere out of Ft. Pierce. Went last Friday AM to the other side of the Stream and had to run away from nice gaffers to find some tunas. Finally did but they were mostly small and sharks were nearby as we had several bit off. Saturday we didnt go that far but caught plenty of dolphin and 3 sails. my nephew won the jr. angler award in the local tournament going on over there.
Headed to Eleuthera to fish the BBC tournament next week. Should have some cool pics and report after we return from there.

Well her soon to be husband is a professor at UF and he is definatly the "academic type" balding head and all. They are having the ceremony at my parents house because it is actually a pretty good venue for it and they will save some money (money which they are using to go around Europe for the next month those SOB's)
But there is some yard work/manual labor stuff that needs to get done, believe me I aint happy about it!

I have been fishing some lately. The trout fishing has been great for us in the flats....Gulf....near Yankeetown. Here are a few pictures.
And yesterday...finally...a nice 32" redfish. Rella...I bet you've been tearing up the reds!

Good stuff, glad to see you guys are getting out there.
My fishing buddies and I have been talking a lot lately about heading down to Yankeetown, problem is we dont know where to go. So I made a chart and marked different spots that look good to me. Hopefully we can get out there to do some scouting soon.

Been fishing from a two person kayak for 3 years and finally caught my (our) 1st keepers tonight. Nothing special but for us (no talent, know nothings) it was just great.
OK, another wimpy yet post worthy fishing story. We went out this past Saturday morning and the wife caught 7 different species in a row (A WORLD RECORD, I maintain). Not easy to do. Try and catch 7 different kinds of fish without catching 2 of the same kind at some point. 1. Blue runner 2. Silver trout 3. Ladyfish 4. Lizard fish 5. Catfish 6. Pinfish 7. Jack
I caught a pinfish and a 3' bonnet head shark (that thankfully he cut the line - no leader).

I agree odds of catching 7 different species in a row has to be like winning the lotto.
We tried to catch some gourpers with no luck. Our impatience got the best of us, and we decide to switch gears and try to target some Cobia. We fished for an half an hour with no luck. So my buddy asked us if we thought cutting the sleeves off his shirt it might change our luck, we look at each other and all decide that we could use some good juju and if my buddy was willing to sacrifice his shirt then so be it (we are not superstitious or anything). We fish for another ten minuets or so and then bam fish on! We got him in the boat and he measured 35’’ to the fork and in the icebox he went. Even though it was not a big one it was our first Cobe of year, and my buddies first ever so we were very happy we made the trip to YT.
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z197/gatorella420/SergiosFirstCobeage-1.jpg
We kept fishing and caught 32'' Cobia tagged and released him after a little battle. A few minuets latter we were cruising along and I saw something on the surface, and we eased up and noticed that it was a little juvenile Cobia and why not…. So I threw a free lined live blue crab on him and as soon as it hit the water he made a bee line to it, but after sizing it up I guess he realized it was a little too big . Then my buddy grabs his red/trout rod that is hooked up with a topwater lure and gives it a toss. As soon as it hit the water he was all over it, but at first I think he was more curious than anything, just nudging it and he followed it to about ten feet away from the boat. We though he would see the boat and spook but when my buddy sped up the retrieve at the boat, the little guy decided he had seen enough and just slammed it. The fish ended up being 27’’ and we tagged and released him, what an awesome thing to see :joecool:.

Just an observation: was on vacation in Bar Harbor, Maine this week and saw NO fish. Water everywhere but when looking into the water or the tidepools, there are no fish, not even minnows or even a minnow, nothing! Nothing on the surface and nothing down on the rocks, nothing. So, so different than our Florida waters. Never seen anything like it. Also, no fishing boats or fishing charters or fishing guide trips advertised anywhere.

Very, very clear. Don't know if water temperatures might be the reason; pretty cold (~ 50). I was shocked; I've never been anywhere where there were absolutely no fish/minnows in the water.

kind of a frustrating morning....
trolled a five line spread along a good rip about 6 miles out. had something big hit the outrigger..... screaming drag and then suddenly gone. We bring the line in to see that our snap swivel failed... completely rippe apart.
After that we lost a nice dolphin at the boat... I tried to gaff it without taking the cover off the point of the gaff. Ugh.
We then landed a smaller dolphin and a big cuda.
Finshed trolling and began to live bait. We got a bunch of big bonito. The fish of the day was a smallish, but VERY acrobatic sailfish. He was caught on a 15# spinning outfit and put on a helluva show.
We ended in typical frustrating fashion... with me hooking into a big fish and fighting it for 15 minutes only to bring in a completely straightened hook.
Only picture worthy fish . . .

I went last Friday. We caught 5 nice keeper Gags and a little kingfish, not a bad day but nothing to really right home about.
It has been a strange summer so far in the big bend for us. The place we usually fish has coffee colored tanic water right now because of the swanee river/okefenokee swamp flooding a couple of months ago. I think it really affecting the fishing in our area for certain species. Then you add in the fact that it has been unseasonably windy this year.
I love those videos Hoops that is sweet.

OK. The downrigger worked well. It made it difficult to drink beer. ;)
I caught my usual 2 fish limit of Coho. I came back to the dock in front of the store (remember, you can only get to the west side by boat) and some of the gang was hanging out drinking beer. In this photo, the lady with her arms wide just came flying back into the inlet with her boyfriend. He's a coastie (coastguardsman). They got an emergency call and his beeper went off. In the background you can see them going out in the big Zodiac. Behind the lady on the left you can see the multi-million dollar "self righting" rescue boat.

So, the downrigger worked well. I got home and looked at my fish. It turns out that the fish in this photo is NOT a Coho it's a Chinook or Spring. It has spots and black gums. The Coho has no spots and white gums. I could have kept fishing!!!! Now I know. The downrigger was what got the Chinook. They're down deep.

Oh my gosh! What a fun thread to read!
EVERYONE, I love reading about your catches and seeing the videos and pictures! Ya'll are all amazing! :-O
Hoops, so glad you are keeping this thread going with all the super reports of your outings and catches! It's also GREAT to see Pant and 7_5 back!!
Ya'll catch such big fish and the types of fishing is so varied. It's so interesting for me to get to see this. Drpmc and I just go in the Gulf and fish for trout, reds and other kinds of smaller fish. Nothing like the fish I'm seeing here. Wow...... :-)
Rella....good info about the water here. We're doing better catching triple tails. Some days the water is tanic, like you said and other days it is a little more clear.
Here are some of our catches lately... I'm almost embarrassed to show these pictures compared to the ones ya'll post. Oh well.... just want to show that I really do like to go fishing.
22" trout caught Fri July 3

July 5... 20" triple tail.....ugly, but tasty as Rella knows! :-)

Out-fished hubby on those days....pure luck, I know. I just have to take it when I can. He always catches bigger and more than I do. :)

A few more pics of the triple tail. Puny compared to the ones Rella catches. :)
16", 20", 17".....So UGLY but great tasting! A lot of meat even on these small ones.

PMC! I love Triple Tail. They are so cool. I was throwing those big flat cactus's in the lagoon years ago (they turn to nothing in a day). I was walking by and noticed a little triple tail (8"?) lying there on the surface on it's side perfectly mimic-ing the cacti, just waiting for something to come by.

PMC . . . those are some nice tripletails!! I have only caught small ones. . . not even big enough to keep/eat.
I heard they are very tasty!

Pant and Hoops, the triple tails really are a delicious fish to eat... very mild flavor...very white meat. I bet Rella can give us some good recipes for cooking them!
Pant, those fish were coming up and floating sideways like you said. They seem to hit the bait so lazily, but once they realize they are hooked, they put up a good fight. Such a fun fish to catch!
I'm looking forward to more good posts from fishin' fools!

I havent been fishing in awhile, but I am now watching a show on Nat Geo about monster fish of the lower Congo river. Its followed by a show called 'Hooked', where they will get a giant freshwater stingray in Thailand. Amazing stuff.

Wow PMC you guys are doing quite well on those TT's to say the least!
Those puppies are perfect eating size that you guys caught. My favorite way to cook them is pan fired and then I make a picata sauce to go on top. But when they are that size I will fillet them and leave the skin on, then grill them on the half shell with differnt stuff on it (defiantly plenty of butter to finish it off ;)
But I am glad you guys have been getting in to them lately, what a fun fish to catch.
Sand all I have to say about that fish is he better take himself off the damn hook! Because I sure as hell aint touching him :jeez:

Speed, I watched both of those shows last night.
Wow, I can't believe the amount of diversity among the species of fish. I would love the chance to visit the Congo one time, but my a$% is taking a gun....
I can't believe that parts of the Congo are over 700ft deep, along with the rapids it has.

BASS, I thought the same thing. 700 ft. deep, kayaks spinning in the whirlpool drain, electric catfish, hundreds of new species, not knowing what is poisonous...

Thanks for the cooking tips Rella! Yumm! We fry them or like tonight, we bake them with olive oil, lemon, onions, salt and pepper. Kinda plain tonight, but so tasty!
I'd like to grill some like you do, IF we can catch some more! :) And yes..such a fun fish to catch!
