we had lots more bites but they were soft. High pressure with bright sunny days not best for silver salmon fishing. Got 8 between 8 and 12 pounds, wife and kids missed at least 10 more. Salmon don't bite to eat once in freshwater, they just strike row tied to hook to try and kill it to eliminate competetion so you have to set the hook hard and fast. Hundreds of salmon milling all around the boat but couldn't get them to strike. They swim up a glacial river till they get to conflunce with their clear water river/stream and then they stop and swim around for 2 -3 days to clear all the silt out of their gills before heading further upstream to spawn.

112 lb halibut in middle was mine, so was the tiny one next to it..also got two nice ling cod and a few rockfish. this pic was of the total catch from 6 fisherman. 7 hours of boat riding and 6 hours of fishing. Over 100 lbs of fillets in the freezer.

too big for the box. :) First time captain tried to stick that big halibut, he hit the gill fin and sticker did not go through. Big fish went nuts after that and it took another 15 minutes to get it boatside and flat enough to get sticker in.

How good does fresh salmon taste? I bet it's totally different than anything I've even tried from a great seafood market.

wild caught pacific salmon is much different/better than farmed salmon. no fishy taste at all. Kings are best, silvers, then reds to my taste buds. Some people prefer red salmon better. when vaccum sealed and flash frozen, it remains good for around a year. fresh halibut is better than fresh grouper to me and halibut freezes real well too. $1.25 / lb to skin it, slice it, pack it, freeze it.

Any of you Fools know whats biting in the Middle Keys right now? We have a group going down to Lower Matecumbe next Friday for a week to do some lobstering/fishing/misbehaving. One of my buddies has the bug thing under control since he has been doing it all his life.
Could use some fishing advice though since I have never been down there. We will be fishing in a pretty seaworthy 21CC. The general game plan at this point is to go for dolphin offshore (humps if weather permits) and chum the patch reefs for snapper.
Any tips?

not down there now but from years past (seems like a different lifetime ago) experience in that area
we often did well trolling big lip plugs around the patch reefs at high tide, usually in 20 - 35 feet of water looking for grouper. idea is to work the edges and pay attention to the side of the patch that casts long shadows. will lose some plugs to barricuda but grouper didn't like wire in clear water. fish with braid, use a shock leader and tighten down the drag.
if you fish the humps this time of year, deeper for blackfin was what I remember, keep an eye out for birds while there
birds and weedlines are always good, use blocks of minnows to use as chum to keep mahi in the slick if you get into them. If slow, drift with debrs line and chum with minnow and fish will find you. keep cut ballyhoo for chunks once you get them around the boat. for mahi, we always did better when we ran ballyhoo naked and just fast enough to make them skip. As long as sea conditions permitted it, skippers always seemed to outfish swimmers for the guy I used to fish with and he was a good captain. we usually trolled against the current, burned more fuel but you are fishing into the fish that way. Run one plug deep, on a planer if you are comfortable with that, for wahoo, definitely a wire leader on the plug. stop and let trolled lines settle on any pieces of debris, picked up some of our biggest mahi that way, they couldn't resist it when it fell to them but they were too sorry to swim up from 40 feet on a bright hot day.
be prepared to fish backcountry if the wind blows. moving water is what you are looking for
just my opinion...

Good luck on the lobster! I've been going down there (Summerland Key MM25) for just about 30 years and I have never seen such a bad lobster season. We have places we go to on the Gulf and Atlantic side that have produced more lobster than you can imagine, yet yielded ZERO lobster this year. Everyone that we talked to said about the same thing.
As far as the dolphin go, you might get some, but usually the fishing is best around May/June for the keys. My dad always goes down in May and does real well, but when I go down for mini-season at the end of July we usually don't do so hot.

I heard the same thing about lobster from a friend that has "private" reefs on the bay side. Dolphin will be fewer but should be bigger, and probably smarter, so technique becomes more critical.
if small snapper are eating your baits in the chum slick while anchored on the reef, try using sand bombs for weight, nice chunk of bait on line (min 24" flourocarbon leader) with no weight and pack a sand ball (sand, catfood, etc) around it and feed braided line to it till it hits bottom and explodes and releases your free floating bait (chunk of ballyhoo)to the bigger fish holding closer to the bottom. takes some prep work to make sand/chum mixture tight enough to form hard balls out of to use for weight but can be only way to get bait to more picky, bigger fish below.

An old fishing fanatic roomate of mine back in the day was stationed in Homer (USCG) and brought back a cooler full of halibut fillets. In-freaking-credible. Ate it about everyday for a month. G8trgr8, you're a lucky man with those fine specimens. How does the ling cod taste? Those are some beats too.

freshly caught (and processed) ling cod taste is similiar to halibut but the texture is different, not quite as flaky. kind of like snapper compared to grouper. total costs for 100 lbs of fillets, gas to/from Valdez, hotel room 2 nights, fishing trip and tip, fishing license, fish processing, fish boxes, and dry ice was more per pound than what I could buy it for but the experience is priceless (and that is with free lugage in first class for shipping it back)

We had a summer-doldrums day last Sat. . . . hot, stagnant, no current.
So I tried something I never have before. I went to a deep drop spot I know about, though I do not deep drop fish nor have the electric reel. But without the current and with my Avet packed with braid.... I figured I could get down to the bottom.... 500'.
It was work, but it worked.
Ever drop we pulled up at least 2 tile fish.
I didn't think to take a photo of them, but here is our handy work . . .

Late report. I went from a week in the keys, to a week in San Fran/Napa for a wedding so I have been really treading water at work. Tough life I guess :-)
Anyhow, we had an awesome trip and the weather was great all week.
According to my buddy it was the worst Lobstering trip in his 25 years of going to the keys, due mainly to the water clarity. Still despite the conditions we ended up with 50-60 bugs, and had a great time doing it! Lobstering really is a fun challenge, and luckily I was able to catch on fast and had a good breath hold. Can't wait to do it again.

Fishing was kind of hit or miss, and we also split time with lobstering. Since it was our first time to the area there was a learning curve involved, Im sure our next trip will be more successful. As many indicated the offshore bite was not all that great. We went to the Islamorada Hump one afternoon with nothing to show for it but the worlds smallest wahoo. Our other offshore day was to the 409 hump, which was much more productive icing a bunch of mahi.

Panhandle has some funny names for fish, most people call them Mingo's here.. some do say beeliner, but the common name is Vermillion Snapper... figured nobody would know what I was talking about if I said mingos.
I think queen snapper have a much bigger eye and are out even deeper.. These were caught in ~200 ft deep.

Not a report. Just information. For those of you who love to fish and eat fish, and are tired of NOAA and big government trampling our rights, join the organization below. It's the only one with rec. fisherman's interest in mind.
Please read the blog and join RFA before it's too late.
They provide some scary and eye opening information. They've already (thankfully) helped to table the idea of "catch shares", which would basically take the shares of rec fisherman and sell them to the highest and wealthiest commercail bidders.
http://www.joinrfa.org/
http://joinrfa.blogspot.com/
It is a written FACT that a major goal of NOAA is that by the year 2020, rec fishing will be for sport and catch and release only.
Directly from NOAA's website and position on their "preffered state in 2020"
http://www.ntsb.gov/news/events/2010...ion%202020.pdf
Current Situation:
The current rate of increase in the angling population creates new management concerns. If the rate of recreational fishermen continues to increase at 3 percent per annum, by 2020 the number of recreational fishermen will increase by 7.3 million to a projected level of 18.5 million. This change will result in a significant increase of fishing effort and catch (i.e., mortality), all else equal. By 2020 continued growth in recreational angling will require that anglers focus more on the fishing experience and less on the number of fish landed. However, while post-release mortality in catch and release fisheries is usually low (often 2-5 percent), as fishing effort increases, post-release mortality will become an increasing proportion of total mortality. It is conceivable that the cumulative total of post-release mortality could increase to levels equal to the total allowable mortality for a fishery. As the number of recreational fishermen continues to increase, improved monitoring will be necessary to assess the fishing effort and catch. A national saltwater angler’s registry under development will be a necessary tool to collect data.
Preferred State in 2020:
Many recreational species have limited population growth rates and are too valuable to be caught only once. By 2020, catch and release fishing is emphasized and accounted for in specific species assessments. The proper techniques for release are refined and disseminated to lower post release mortality. For other fisheries, minimum size limits and reduced daily bag limits are sufficient management measures to maintain healthy standing stocks. Additional seasonal closures are considered to eliminate or redirect effort. By 2020, angler satisfaction is derived from the recreational fishing experience rather than the take or "kill" fish. To achieve optimum yield, adaptive management measures such as a temporary reallocation of quota is available to managers. For example, if commercial quota is not harvested, managers are able to temporarily
17
reassign the under harvested quota to provide additional recreational opportunity, and vice versa.
Proposed Actions to Accomplish Preferred State:
(a) Improve collection of recreational catch, release, and harvest data,
(b) Create and use the recreational angler registry.
(c) Continue to promote catch and release fisheries,
(d) Reduce daily bag limits and implement minimum or maximum size limits when necessary for those fish stocks where resorting to total catch and release is not necessary,
(e) Promote research to accurately quantify and minimize post release mortality,
(f) Increase the length of seasonal closures when necessary and encourage the recreational community to maximize the profitability of open seasons,
(g) Amend fishery management plans to allow for timely conversion of unused commercial allocation to the recreational sector and vice versa;
(h) Implement a variety of programs and incentives to enhance the conservation ethic of recreational anglers.
Proposed Entity(s) to Promote Actions:
(a) The leadership of the recreational fishing community should promote the total recreational fishing experience, instill a conservation ethic, and de-emphasize landings.
(b) Industry and NOAA Fisheries should continue to support research and technology designed to reduce post release mortality.
(c) Management (councils, commissions, NOAA Fisheries) should consider extending closed seasons to reduce mortality.
(d) Management, (councils, commissions, NOAA Fisheries), should amend fishery management plans to allow, when appropriate, the conversion of commercial quota onto recreational quota and vice versa.
THIS SHOLD SCARE THE HELL OUT OF ANYONE WHO POSTS ON THIS THREAD.

During a commercial break of the first half of the game yesterday, I stepped out on the back porch of my parents house to sip a cold beer in the awesome weather. I looked down and saw this old girl cruising along the seawall. Ran down and on the 3rd cast, when she was just about out of range, I convinced her to turn and jump on a mirrodine in about 1.5' of water. She was so tall, her tail was all of the way out of the water while she was digging for crabs and shrimp. Hopped off the dock and released it to fight another day. That will likely be my best football commercial break ever.

Had a pretty good trip this past Sunday. We had quite a variety, too. Gags, red groupers, ling (38 pounder) , AJ's (a couple 30 pounders), triggers, kings and a truckload of red snapper (several over 20 lbs....all released, of course!).

I've hunted and fished my entire life. I have never seen a more absurd set of regulations than what we currently have for red snapper. There were three of us fishing and I would very conservatively estimate we caught 60 - 70. And we caught them every place we stopped - artificial structure or live bottom, made no difference. I think it ties back to gator 7_5's post above about the regulatory move towards eventually making the fishery catch and release. Our fisheries management is an unbalanced joke - far too heavily slanted towards 'conservation'. I'm hearing they are considering shortening snapper season even further for 2013. I'm not sure they even consider the impact of increasing numbers of these predatory fish might have on the rest of the system. Rant over (for now).

damn, nice trip baygator1... yeah, red snapper regs make absolutely no sense at all. We hardly go offshore this time of year because its really hard to target gags. Red snapper will eat everything you drop down.
The dumbest part of all is that at least half of those snapper released get crushed by dolphins... you can't fish up here without a momma porpoise and her young ones just cruising around your boat waiting for free meals.

Thanks guys.
Yes, it is frustrating. And I've shared the info you provided a few posts above with several other folks.
The hardest thing for me to understand about this is the fact that the fishery is a constantly renewing resource. If you maintain reasonable harvest quotas the fishery will thrive for generations. Why try to cut 'catch and keep' anglers completely out? It just makes no sense at all, and it would represent a very serious impact on coastal economies.
The only perspective most of these idiot bureaucrats have of a fishery is what they see in reports prepared by someone else and the aquarium at their favorite 5-star restaurant.
Maybe the states will step in and apply more reason and balance to regs in state waters.

What do you mean by venting a redfish?
Here is a vid showing how it's done.
I am catching these reds in 40'+ water and their air bladders are full which in turn makes them float like a cork. They cannot swim down as their buoyancy is out of balance. They are easy targets for sharks and birds and other predators while floating on the surface. Vent that air from them and they practically jump out of your hands soon as you put them back in the water.

damn jewfish aren't timid. We were catching snapper about 30 miles off of Naples a few years back and had one around 200 lbs come up and camp under our boat. Every time you would bring a snapper up he would shoot out like a large mouth bass attacking a shiner. biggest rigs we had were 4/0 with 50 lb test so we tied two together to one leader and baited him up. Not sure if he survived the beating long term but he limped away with a heck of a headache from the clubbing he took once we got him to the boat. Really need to open a season on them. They are decimating the snapper and grouper stocks on anything with more than 3 - 4 feet of relief around here.

fishing marlin off coast of australia with my son is on the bucket list. when my son gets big enough to be able to work a 6/0 rod, we will go. Saving ff miles now for the trip. He is 9, I am thinking when he is 13 or 14 and he can wrestle a jewfish standing up, he should be able to fight a marlin from the chair.
what is worst thing that happened to you from a hot fish?
scariest moment from a fish?
me..big bull dolphin that we horsed to the boat. 60 lbs in ten minutes and he came in the boat flush but when we got a shot with the gaff we were not going to let him drag it out. I went to close him down before he trashed the deck and he hit me in square in the shin with his tail. I could feel that bone bruise for months.
scariest, a big wahoo that threw the plug in the boat and got off the gaff. we all cleared but that is quite a mouthful of teeth. note --we do not boat barricuda, and sharks come in dead or they don't come in. second would be wrestling a jew fish clipped in and standing and losing your balance. new rule, never strap in standing...

we used to drive over to Anastasia back in the 80's. we would leave G'ville around noon, stop in Palatka and load up on blue crabs for bait, and then drive down to the jetties at the north end of Anastasia and fish those big bull reds. we kept what we caught...got stopped in Palatka one morning around 6 am and we were spent. had fished all night, had about 12 big reds (before the slot limit though), and cop pulls us over because he was bored and we were new truck in town early am wants to see what we caught. them were some mighty big trout and thank god he was a bass and bream man. bad part was the big ones usually had worms, about half of em that I recall. had to slice a lot of nice fillets up to get them things out.

ft. pierce when i was a kid, my dad went with a friend and caught his first sail. When his buddy went to grab the bill, the sail jumped and punctured his lung. He fell back into the boat and got back up, grabbed the leader again, wham, the sail jumped at him again, hit his sternum with the bill and broke off about two inches of the bill in his chest. Dad had never piloted a twin inboard but they got back to the dock while an ambulance waited. Took buddy to the er and removed the bill, patched him up and a few hours laterwe took pictures at the dock with thefish, my dad and buddy with a budweiser in one hand and a cigarette in the other. White gause patch on his chest and all.
For me, ive had a snowy grouper that weighed close to 100 pounds break his dorsal spine off in my wrist. Doctors in the er used vice grips to pull it out. Still have zero feeling in the inside of my right index finger.

took my 9 year old son out yesterday...filled the livewell with whitebait on one throw and then let my son throw his little 4' net a few times against the pilings and he caught a few...headed out for some of my favorite redfish holes to find them full of guided tourists so found spots where we could. first spot saw lots of dolphin, two manatees, and caught a few jacks...second spot the tide was moving out pretty good but we sliced and diced a lot of bait and got a good chum line going that brought the reds off the flats and into our hole as the tide was falling. caught 7 reds and lost a few more to the mangroves in around 2 hours, biggest was 32 inches which was a great fight for my son, cooked up two on the grill at halftime tonight and had blackened redfish, red beans and rice, and cornbread for dinner this pm..love taking my son fishing and he can't get enough

I just think they are a totally awesome inshore species.. you can catch redfish, specks, and tarpon almost anywhere from here through texas and up to the carolinas. Only in the southern parts of FL can you catch snook in this country. It's a preservation, tourism, local economy thing for me.
I think they should be protected the same as goliath grouper. Shouldn't even be allowed to take them out of the water (at least on the west coast).
I've heard they are good... I eat a ton of fresh scamp, gag, and red snapper.. how would you say it compares?

Better..but that is subjective. we catch quite a few on nearshore reefs too. Prior to the big freeze the population was doing good. Since then the reds have become more dominant as they are feasting on the bait without competetion from the snooker. Look for deep cuts close to shore and fish them slowly with at least 3' of 30 lb flourocarbon leader. They will be very tackle shy with cold snap. Deepestet docks with lights and handpicked shrimp St night might find some monsters but you better gear up and lock the drag down. Swift moving water near passes is usually best but ask the local bait shop.

We fished with this guy a few years ago "The Mad Snooker".. I learned about and caught more snook in 1 night than my whole life combined. My in laws live in a neighborhood with a lot of great canals and less than 1 mile from a huge mangrove preserve called Weedon Island. I've done really well there. Last thanksgiving when I was down there, I was fishing in my kayak and I heard a familiar voice from a boat close by. It was CA Richards from Flats Class... I think I was in a pretty good spot!

They need to do something. The jewfish in sw florida are cleaning out the grouper and snapper on anything with enough relief for the jewfish to hide out around in sw florida. don't bother fishing the wrecks anymore as you usually have to fight to get anything past the jewfish but if you have a tourist in town that wants to feel just how strong a big fish can be, it isn't too hard to do. in the keys, we used to put em on the aj's but these jewfish are much stronger but you can't get em to the boat unless you tease em up off the bottom and lock down the drags on a 6/0 or better and then it is still a battle for a fighting chair.

FINALLY got back out on the water, our first trip since the Keys in August. Hunting & Football have kept us off the water for the most part. We usually don't start fishing until about a month from now, but with this freakish weather we have had the last couple of weeks we decided to give it a shot.
There isn't any reason to go offshore this time of year in the Big Bend, so we decided to head out the Waccasassa River to do some redfishing.
Water was clear and there wasn't much wind so we polled around and sight casted to fish all day. The reds were not real thick but it was a good day to break the ice on 2013. Sight casted up my first Sheepie, never seen them eat before so that was cool.
It was a beautiful day on the water to be sure, cant wait to get back out!

Just heard the proposed season for federal waters...a pathetic and laughable 27 days. And, maybe even a daily bag limit of one fish per person.
This is beyond ridiculous. I'm writing Southerland, Nelson and Rubio. I'm all for conservation and reasonable measures to maintain the fishery. I want it to be vaible for us and our kids. But the enviro-whacks running these agencies and directing rule making are way off the friggin reservation. And it's starting to filter into hunting as well. The state is prepping to further dissect the 'zones' with even more rules and regulations to follow.

Once La. goes non-compliant and starts their state water weekend snapper seasoon going for months, they are estimating a 10 day season for everyone else. FL HAS to go noncompliant. If we did, federal water would be closed for good, and these idiots would have to make changes (Fed closure means those with federal permits would NOT be allowed to harvest in state waters with recreational anglers). We could smash some snappers in State waters, and in dream scenario, they would go regional like trout, redfish, mackeral, etc and in the panhandle we could have a real snapper fishery again.

You don't even need to leave Pensacola bay to catch big red snapper and grouper! We can (and do) slay some serious hosses inside 7 miles.
There are so many reasons these regs are straight bone-head.. porpoises eat every single released snapper now, we're doing more harm than good by having closures. Besides, commercial guys murder them year round.

Where did all the fishing fools go? This one went to 'Boondoggle' last weekend. Weather was bad for fishing but good for meeting hundreds of kayak anglers from far and wide. 11 states in all, Maine was the farthest to make the trip. I missed the crawfish boil fresh from La., but I had the best boston butt ever smoked and smoked turkey stuffed with sliced apples and other goodies.
Big fish was a 51.5" red caught by one of the Jacksonville guys. A handful of kayaks, canoes, and a surprise flats boat were given away along with thousands in rods, reels, and other tackle.
Lots of money was raised for high school kids scholarships and Heroes on the Water, an organization that helps veterans with PTSD.

Still tyring to get swelling down from getting my torn meniscus fixed up so couldn't take out the boat so I went out to the Sanibel Causeway yesterday with my 9 year old son. Hard incoming tide had a nice eddy working by one of the bridges that was loaded with ladyfish and a few spanish mixed in. Even a few small kings were caught from shore.
Anyway, after catching a few ladyfish and getting a couple of lines cut off, we were down to our last lure while I let my son just stand and cast. Just as we were about ready to leave, he got a hit by something that spooled him for the first time ever. It took about 150 yards of 30lb braid off a fairly tight drag on a penn 6500 before it just dumped the spool and snapped him off. Not sure if it was a big king or one of the tarpon I saw rolling in the area that ate his jig but it was priceless to sit there and watch the helpless look on his face as that fish spooled him. Sad that he never got to see the fish but glad he got to experience what a really powerful fish can do.

Took my daughter Friday...she did pretty well - caught more fish than I did! I redeemed myself right before we left with a 26.5" candidate for the grill. The tannic water from all the recent rain runoff gives those reds some awesome coloration.

I'm pretty sure I caught a snakehead the other day. Very pointy nose/mouth full of small teeth, round body about the size of a bratwurst, brown, about a foot or more long, looked just like a snake skin. Just south of Ponce Inlet in Callalisa Creek.

Definitely good for them to have something in common with boys besides hormonal urges....I've already told my two daughters if they wanted to date a guy I got to take him fishing first; figure I can chum up some nice bull sharks pretty much anytime around Boca Grande pass and explain to the fellas how much meat a fired up bull shark can consume in a short period of time and how well a little bleach and a scrub brush washes the blood stains right off the boat.

Went for the first time last year with our friend who lives in Melbourne, so we go to Sebastian all the time. Not an expert on it though, I'm sure someone here can give you better guidance.
Our set up consisted of lights on each side of the bow. One on each side of the boat. Not sure on the bulb. we had probably 10-12ft dip nets we would snatch them up with. Its a lot easier if you get the net down in the water before hand instead of stabbing at them. We had one guy on each side near the bow call out to their side when shrimp were coming. Communication is key like using words like coming in "short" or "long". Once the tide starts going out they start flowing like a constipated bull. We also had a home made box net that we dragged behind the boat that was probably a 4x4 square. Worked pretty well when we let it sit for a while. Was a pain in the ass to pull in when it starts ripping through there.
Not sure on the exact positioning at Sebastian but we were more centered in the channel but off to the right side a little closer to the rocks (where the state park beach is).
Lots of getting up at 2am for about 3 nights straight for about 5 hours.
Like I said I'm no expert on shrimping, I would ask your local bait shop for more info. Still a lot of fun. The shrimp were large to jumbo last year when we went, and they came through pretty thick.
Hope something I said helped, and good luck!

Love your pics, bay. Good stuff.
I fished Madeira Beach from a kayak yesterday (Sunday), for 3 hours. Air temp 80, water 68. Had a pinfish out under a cork and was fishing the bottom with live shrimp. Pinfish never got touched. Caught 2 whiting, 4 silver trout, a speckled trout and a ladyfish - all small. Water needs to warm up another 5 degrees for the real fish (mackeral, kings, tarpon, etc.) to start showing up. Maybe next week.

Thanks y'all. We released every fish Saturday, too. My fishing partner and I both have a few in the freezer still, and I have my folks stocked up fairly well. So they lived to fight another day. We had 4 reds between 26 and 27...none over, and several smaller. Wish it had been a tourney...we'd have cashed the fat check!
deathroll - this week should help a lot with the temps. Good luck when you get back after 'em.

Finally got out fishing yesterday... 5 mahi (only 3 keepers-- 7-10lbs), 3 bonito that became strip bait and a small blackfin tuna.
Had a huge hammer head follow our chumline right to the boat and basically bump his head into out hull. It was pretty cool to see.

lots of bait around the sanibel causeway. kings and spanish mackerel are mixed in on the incoming tides. reds are strong this year, they have had a lot less snook to compete with for food after the hard freeze a couple of years back. everything is pretty good right now so it all depends on where he wants to fish and what he wants to fish for. offshore grouper bite is pretty good too.

Today we got a double header.... he was reeling in a mayan chilid and I sqaw a big large mouth lurking. I threw to him and whammo! Got another hefty one a bit later and let my kid crank him in until it wrapped him on a drainage pipe.
His technique when he hooks a fish is far better than his patience when he does not!! LOL! But, he only turned 3 a few months ago....

damn jewfish aren't timid.
I was snorkeling on Looe Key and about a 500lb Jewfish came up under our 21 foot boat. That sucker was daggum huge! My uncle was on the boat and told me to get my 3 little cousins out of the water then he told me to stay in and take pictures with his underwater camera lol.
I started getting a little closer to take the pictures but was cautious because I wasn't in the mood to get my arm sucked into its mouth lol. That sucker started turning towards me when I was inching closer so I decided to back off lol. It was an amazing experience.
You can see so many amazing things in the Keys if you spend time there. I have had a Whale Shark come right under my boat. I have seen a Sun Fish. I have grabbed onto a Sea Turtle shell and it pulled me for a ways. I have swam with sharks and Barracudas bigger than I cared to be around lol. Always something.

we had lots more bites but they were soft.

These are from 2009. For graduation my grandfather payed for half of my 5 day trip with him and his friends to Alaska. I had to pay the other half but it was worth every penny. Most beautiful place I have ever been. If I could figure out how to put more pictures on here then I would post a lot more.
I caught the smaller of those 2 Halibuts. Mine was around 80lbs. My friends was 163lbs, we weighted it but once we got to the scales there was a 304lb Halibut already hanging there. It was huge as you can see in the picture!!! Also about a 50lb Ling Cod.

300 lb is a barn door halibut. massive fillets must have come off of that. hope they had a derby ticket. to post pics, upload them to flickr or photobucket and then copy and paste the url for them into the attach image block that pops up. Alaska is a long flight for 5 days. Glad you had a good time though. Spend all the time in Valdez?
edit, largest in derby that year was 312 lbs. no 304 listed so I am guessing they didn't buy a derby ticket

Lovely for skinny water. No reason to fear winter tides with that. Just don't hit a wave or that shovel nose might dive under. That wouldn't be any fun. Reds are thick in Ft Myers right now

For a quick trip you got some highlights. The drive from Anchorage to the Homer turnoff and between Valdez and Wasilla / Palmer are two of the prettiest drives in the state and top 10 in US. Need to experience some glaciers, whales, bears, hiking, Denali, and some salmon fishing to round out the experience. You drove right past good glacier hiking spot. See pub photo album for pics of Matanuska Glacier and other spots in Alaska.

We did get out and walk on one glacier but not sure which. We saw a few of them and a few volcanos. We saw a grizzly and some moose and lots of Whales. We saw lots of seals and sea lions(I believe thats what they were) and we also saw thousands of small ice bergs. That was crazy!
While we were in Valdez the captain of our boat said he would take us somewhere we could catch lot of Halibut or somewhere we might not catch any but if we did they would be big. We told him we wanted to go to the bigger fish. Our boat ride was around 2 hours and we were the only boat out there. tell your dad that there is a camper supplier that will allow you to drive their campers from Missouri (I think) to their customers in Alaska. Read about it on trip advisor. They give you around 3 weeks to make the trip. I would definitely advise them to go through Banff and Jasper in Canada and spend some time there on their way up. They can hit the north rim of grand canyon, zion, bryce, grand tetons, yellowstone, glacier, banff, and then jasper all within a 1000 mile drive and travel through some incredible country on the way.
better to go back to Alaska when you are young and poor. much cheaper that way. chase credit card = sign on bonus miles = free plane ticket, hostels, trains, hitch hiking, camping can make it cheap. get old and get a wife and family in tow, not so much.....if you must marry, skip the wedding, spend it on the ring and the honeymoon.
alternate, spend a summer up there working for one of the park hotel operators. Princess hires thousands of people to live and work at their lodges as does Aramark and others. some real hot interntational women there. live in a dorm with people froma round the world. may change your mind or give you some ideas. work 5 days, get 2 to explore. ahh to be young and free again...no the wife doesn't read these...

Just booked a flight to Detroit to fish Lake St Claire in June. The new #1 ranked bass lake in the US! That's right, I'm a fresh water guy now.

Enjoy ripping lips on those Smallie's up there! They offer an incredible fight for freshwater fish, in case you've never caught one

I caught a few when I lived in ATL... they had smallies and shoal bass in the hooch. St Claire is out of this world though.

fish the stick marsh if you ever get the chance. one of the most underrated, undiscussed fishing spots we have if you really like freshwater that much. something tells me that when you smell the sea, you will get the snook rods and the cast net out and head for the inlet.

Oh the freshwater thing is not a choice really... I moved from Pensacola to Dallas/Fort Worth in Jan. I am also making fishing trips to Pensacola for 4th of july (only 14 days of red snapper/ gag overlap) and Anna Maria 1st week of August.
I bought a Florida lifetime sw license before I left.

Pretty rough video, folks. Still learning to catch tarpon, work the camera and edit video.
Still, we liked this a LOT!
2 person kayak. I'm in back. I hook the thing and then pass it to my buddy (just call him potty mouth) after 5 seconds.

Actually, you need to get an airboat and fish the flooded area about 5 miles away from the stick marsh. The biggest bass in the state by far! I ve been an i caught a 10lb, and 3 around 8lbs in a few hours. The guy that took me there caught a 15lb. that day. Oh and if you google map it and do find it dont forget you can only fish on tuesday otherwise you may be shot by duck hunters!

More like what doesn't he know. He's to humble to admit it, but he's the 2 time defending Gulf coast kayak inshore slam champion. When he left pensacola, I heard ticket sales for this yrs event tripled - at least that's the word on the street.

Thanks Bay. We were so amped we went out at 6:30 (still fairly dark) the next morning. Water was rough. Nearly got swamped on the way out and then only stayed out 1/2 hour. Had waves washing over us as we reached the beach. Like I said, we're still learning. We learned to cool it a little when the conditions aren't right. Gotta be patient.

Here's the ugly truth about living here in TN. I now am looking forward to catching one pound smallmouth in a creek. To say that I miss the salt is an understatement.

Little guy is getting big Brent, man does time fly...
Just bought my first boat yesterday. Hard to describe how happy I am, to finally be able to go fishing whenever I want.
Anyhow its a 17' Renegade Skate with modified V and a tunnel. This thing will run in a puddle and has a ton of fishable surfaces.
Her maiden voyage is planned this Sunday Redfish BEWARE!!!
