if you have a PS3, GET THIS GAME! Let me tell you, this is not just one of the best games on the PS3 but one of the best games ever. Make sure you brush up on the previous 3 before you get into this one, though. Lots of twists and turns! The attention to detail is AMAZING.

Apples to oranges, but I think so. MGS4's execution is absolutely flawless IMO, but its aim is not nearly as broad. Stealth gameplay has never been executed so finely. It also online gameplay.

Like COD4, you really do feel like you're in a war zone. There is a lot more freedom of choice in MGS4 though. You're on your own, so you have to decide whether you want to go guns blazing, stealth, or something in between. There are different militia forces all fighting against each other that you can become friendly with, but you're really working for your own purpose. It's more like black ops than COD4.

My experience with MGS series is the less kills the better. So I dont think it is fair to compare it to COD4. MGS takes a lot of patience to play it the way it is intended to be played, IMO.

I never liked the MSG stories. Always too heavy handed for me. Love the sneaking action. Still prefer Thief and wish they had not made Tenchu so crappy after the first one.

I loved Thief and the first Tenchu. I can't believe how far downhill Tenchu went. It is really disappointing.

It takes almost an hour just to get the game going because of install time and updates.

IGN rated MGS4 a 10, with the comment that if they could have rated it an 11 they would. Check out the review:

FWIW I agree with everything they said. MGS4 is a spectacular experience.

I played about an hour last night. Wow. I mean, just...wow.
Amazing game, and no it does not take an hour to get it started. If it took your PS3 that long to get it going, you need to call Sony and do some diagnostics on your device.

How long is the gameplay? 10 hrs?
G8RBrave
06-13-2008, 02:52 PM
I believe it is considerably longer than that, but I could be wrong. Some of these cutscenes in just the first hour have been 10 minutes or so, and I've heard that there are some later on that are way longer than that. But, then - does that count toward the "gameplay time"?

I'm jw if you think it can be finished in a week rental.

Depends on how much free time you have on your hands. I could never finish it in a week, at least I don't think I could.

Gamespot just posted their review, another 10.0. I am sure the game is great, but you cannot convince me any game deserves a perfect 10. That suggests, well, perfection and nothing is beyond a little improvement. For instance, they always list the good and bad points of the game and under the Bad it says "Storytelling is heavy-handed." That would make it a notch below perfect for me. I had the same problem with the old games, and that won't stop me from enjoying it, but it doesn't make it perfect and having a better story would certainly make it more enjoyable.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. Hopefully I'll be able to afford a PS3 one day to play it, it just seems like the review sites go ga-ga over games from the big developers then throw them perfect 10 scores after an all-night blitz play session without considering what perfect really means.

First, they very very rarely rate a game a 10. Second, it is all relative anyway. What this tells you is that it is better than 99.99% of the games out there so it is definitely worth the time and money.

I think COD4 and Grand Theft Auto4 both got 10s.

Then youd be able to finish it, I would think. But with that kind of time, you could finish Final Fantasy X in a week.

You could fairly easily, but I'd recommend going ahead and just buying it. Not only is it one of those once in console generation games, but Metal Gear Online is a blast.

What is the online play? Team games or just single player deathmatch?

Both. It's stealth in the spirit of MGS, but still has plenty of action of you want to play that way. There are a variety of weapons in addition to stealth moves and close quarters hand to hand combat. There's nothing better than sneaking up behind someone camping, making your character salute, then when they turn around throwing them on the ground and shooting them between the eyes. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's fun, and definitely something different from COD4. There are both team and individual games.

Well I finished the game this morning. Took me about 20 hours total including cut scenes and generous exploration of every area while trying to maintain stealth, so it can definitely be done faster. Make sure you watch the ending all the way through the credits, as there is a HUGE surprise waiting after the first set of credits and the usual conversation over black screen at the end of the second set.

Hmmm, I think missing mgs3 puts me at a slight disadvantage in this game. Still trying to get the hang of the hiding in the grass and having a camo percentage. So far though I have done little stealth, and the buzzsaw has been my friend.
It is a good game though.

The main thing you really missed from MGS3 is the storyline. There is a lot that figures into the plot for this game and how everything set up, including some very major players who reappear. The camo isn't as big a deal in this game as in MGS3 as the octocamo automatically gives you the best camo for the situation. You also have a variety of new moves. You really could make it through this game only using a gun during the boss fights and frog attacks(although a couple key RPG or tranquilizer shots will help you tremendously with the local militias)

Just finished it up. Am probably going to crank up the difficulty and play it again, if for nothing else to try to understand some of the nuances of the story line a bit better. Amazing game, though. Nothing bad to say about it.
