1. Grand theft auto 4.
a. Uncharted 2
2. Destiny of an emperor (NES) Still play every year or so. (seriously)
3. Final Fantasy (1-7) Had to choose one --> probably 3, maybe 7.
4. Tomb Raider 1-4 (too hard to pick 1)
5. DOOM (ps1)
6. Zelda... Link to the past.
7. grand turismo 2
8. Fallout 3 GOTY
9. Mike Tyson's punch out
10. Super Mario brothers 3
11. Dead space 1/2

Yes, I technically have 12, but 10 is too hard! There's no way I can keep dead space out. Maybe take fallout 3 away, but that was a damn good game. I played A LOT of fallout 3.

Honerable mention, in no particular order.....

-Golden eye...very close to being top 10
- Metal gear (solid)
-Shadow of Collosus
-Resident evil 1/2 and GOTY edition (RE4)
-Contra
-Castelvania
-Double dragon
-Tony Hawk 1-2....played this religiously.
-God of War....Instant classic.
-Twisted Metal...played it religiously.
-Need for speed (the older versions, not the dub
edition crap) I actually played the original 3DO NFS...lol
-darksiders....ps3
-Oblivion (PS3)
-Devil may Cry
-Hitman (PS2)
-Return Fire (PS1)
-heavenly sword...ps3
-nba jams....played it religiously
-space hulk (ps1)
I didn't include Madden and NCAA, but those are obviously great seriessssss.

I'll go old school -- all coin-op.

Black Tiger - first game I could finish on 1 quarter. Really fun!
NBA Hangtime
Street Fighter II
Pac-Man - gotta include this classic
Galaga
Track and Field
Karate Champ
Saturday Night Slam Masters
Super Dodge Ball
720 Degrees

SteelGator, I spent many Saturday afternoons in a 7-Eleven as a kid playing Karate Champ and Track & Field. Awesome coin-ops, IMO.

Karateka
Super Mario Brothers
RBI Baseball
NBA Jam
X-Com
Civ II
Exile III: Ruined World
Golden Eye
Diablo II
Escape Velocity: Nova

My two favorite are Civ II and X-Com: Ufo Defense. I still play Civ II regularly (I was able to get a patch to make it run on OSX) and play through X-Com about every other year. I bought an N64 just for Golden Eye and then took it to the store a week later and returned it because I hadn't gone to school or work the entire time. Super Mario Brothers was an awesome summer. We had this video arcade/hamburger shop that would give free burgers to the person who had the highest score the day before. NBA Jam was a year that I got travel a lot, and so me and a buddy would memorize all of the cheat codes and go rock people at whatever local arcade we happened to be at. RBI Baseball was another one of those awesome summers, we would have neighborhood tournaments and probably spent more time inside playing sports than outside playing sports. ExileIII (and the first two games) were incredible stories being told through games.

The Civ series is awesome. True story: Civ I had just been released and I was at UF for Summer C. I had been wanting to try it since a friend was raving about it. I think he even gave me his CD to borrow it.

Early one morning I had a final exam scheduled and the prof gave of the option of accepting our grade up to that point and skipping the final. I had a B and was happy with it, so I headed over to the PC lab and started playing Civ. I got so engrossed that I sat at that computer for 8 hours straight playing the game. No food, only a potty break or two... pretty sad now that I think about it! :)

Super Mario Bros
Mario Kart 64
007: Golden Eye
GTA 3+
Halo
Guitar Hero

007 Goldeneye - Don't bash me on this one, GTA series is better but if im going to take into consideration that there was a lot less technology then, this has to be my #1. The 4 player mode on this game was ABSOLUTELY SICK.

GTA Series - I think these are the best games ever made but Goldeneye gets the nod for me because of how good it was back then...

NCAA/Madden Football - No explanation needed

Super Mario series

Contra - If you played this game, it has to be on your top 10.

Gran Turismo series - Best driving series of all time

Street Fighter

Starcraft - This game is SUPER addictive. (for PC)

Baseball Stars (Nintendo) - If you played it, you know why.

Mike Tysons punchout (Nintendo) - Same as above.

What did you think of ICO? I never played it. Also, I see you put down Chrono Triger. definitely a classic. I still have it.

CorporalGator
06-02-2008, 11:30 PM
If you liked Shadow of the Colossus, then you should also like ICO. Same type graphics, although a bit worse for wear since it was a first run title early on the PS2. Game play is similar - kid stumbles around and such, the controls make you feel more like you're part of the game. The whole castle is one giant puzzle and it has a sweetness factor not found in many video games. (I'm struggling to find a way to describe this. There's a connection that you gain similar with the hose Agro...) Definitely recommend it.

For those of you wondering why I have DOE at 2, it was one of the first great RPGs. Believe it or not, I STILL own it and play it every 2-3 years. The second one never made it to our shores, so it has to be played through an imulator.(sp?) I downloaded a while back, but it didn't work right. I never tried it again. Maybe one day....

Emulator... Here's a link to the updated working and translated into English rom:
http://www.theoldcomputer.com/Libarary's/Emulation/NES/ROMs/Destiny%20of%20an%20Emperor%202.zip

Here's the emulator to run it as recommended by the translators:

http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/nes/fwnes.html

You will have to run it in dosbox. If you need help with that, I can try and walk you through it. I had some trouble getting it running myself, but I finally did after some tweaking.

Contra
Ultima series
Zelda series
Diablo series
Mario series
(what can I say, all of these series had a good thing going)
Simcity
Bioshock
Gears of War
Call of Duty 4 (I usually like most of the first person war games but the most recent is usually the best)

My favorite Nintendo baseball game was Legends of the Diamond. They had the weiner dog that would chase foul balls down the lines and a kid that would come from RF to catch a HR in LF or vice versa. it also had all the best players ever. Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Mantle, etc.

NCAA Football is my #1. It has been one of the only games I have purchased for the past 5-6 years.

10) Halo 2

http://www.gameguru.in/images/halo-2-logo-1.jpg

My personal favorite FPS game, though CoD 4 is running up on it fast. My friends and I played this constantly in college, so this one makes my list.

9) Madden 2000

http://images.starpulse.com/AMGPhotos/games/cov200/drg000/g010/g01079wj10w.jpg

The game that (IMO) turned the franchise around. 99 was jerky and hard to control. 2000 fixed a ton of problems and made the franchise (again IMO) what it is today.

8) Tiger Woods 2002

http://content.answers.com/main/content/img/amg/games/drg100/g126/g1265240zp8.jpg

The Tiger Challenge was a lot of fun, and this game really perfected the analog swing. Tiger's Dream 18 was awesome, and unlike later releases of the game, it was a completely different 18 holes of golf rather than a compilation of "Tiger's Favorite Holes". Plus, I shot a 41 on 18 holes in this game. :)

7) Final Fantasy VII

http://4down.info/uploads/posts/2008-03/1205341947_final-fantasy-vii-ps1.jpg

Cloud. Sephiroth. Bad ass game.

6) NCAA 2002

http://www.tycromedia.com/images/PS2-NCAA-Football-2002.gif

Yep, it had a Nole on the cover. But it also had Woodrow Dantzler, who was (IMO) the "Tecmo Bo" of the NCAA football franchise. Couple his speed and good enough arm strength with the ability to literally stop on a dime and he was unstoppable.

5) Super Mario Bros

http://blogs.columbiatribune.com/gameover/super-mario-bros.e_00.png

The original SMB. Gotta have it on my list somewhere.

4) Mike Tyson's Punch Out

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2001/nes/miketysonspunchout/miketysonspunchout_screen002.jpg

This game is just not the same later on without Iron Mike. Tough final battles against Sandman and Mike make this game worth fighting through the scrubs before it. Figuring out the patterns was the fun part here.

Oh, and try to beat this bad boy with the Power Glove.

3) Super Mario Bros 3

http://www.juegomaniaticos.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/windowslivewriterretrogameofthedaymariobros3-17b8super-mario-bros-3-boxfront-74404821.jpg

After Mario 2 (aka Doki Doki Panic - look it up), Nintendo needed to get back to the Mario roots. Mario 3 was groundbreaking in a lot of ways, and was one of the most creative games in the series. My personal favorite Mario.

2) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

http://zeldadungeon.net/Soundtracks/Ocarina%20of%20Time%20US%20Front%20Large.jpg

Many folks think this is the greatest video game ever created, and I'm damn close to agreeing. Awesome gameplay beginning to end, and (IMO again) the best story of any Zelda game.

1) Metal Gear Solid

http://www.megghy.com/immagini/Psx/FICHE%20M/COVERS/Metal_Gear_Solid_Pal.jpg

My single favorite game of all time. I must have replayed this game 10 times. Never could beat it on "extreme" or whatever they called it, but I've never been so immersed in a game as I was MGS. Solid Snake is the ultimate badass, and the Psycho Mantis battle was amazing. Great graphics, great gameplay, awesome story, and the baddest ass video game character of all time make this my #1.

Metal Gear Solid was a great game. I don't know about my Top 10. But off of the top of my head in no particular order...NCAA Football, Gears of War, Call of Duty 4. Throw in Tiger Woods and Madden too I guess.

Honorable Mention: FIFA- Not even a big follower of soccer, game is just fun. IMO.

Judoka
06-09-2008, 04:44 PM
The Half Life series- my own personal addiction.

Other than that, in no particular order:
Gyruss
Magic Sword
Tempest
American McGee's Alice
Need for Speed Most Wanted
Nox (I *still* play this damn thing)
the Serious Sam series
Total Annihilation Kingdoms
and of course the new Wii Fit. Who knew one-legged Yoga poses were so damned hard?

1. Super Mario 3

no explanation necessary

2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past

Perfected and expanded the original Zelda

3. Street Fighter 2

THE fighting game from which all others originated. Amazing depth and balance

4. Zelda 64

If you enhanced the graphics, this game would still stand up today in terms of depth and gameplay

5. Metal Gear Solid

Amazing story, unparalleled gameplay, inspired the entire stealth genre

6. Gran Turismo 2

Still the deepest racing game ever to come out for a console, though you would have an argument for GT4 since it still provided a fairly deep experience and support for the Driving Force Pro wheel.

7. Mario 64

The first game for N64 was one of the finest of the whole generation

8. Doom

Wolfenstein came first, but Doom spawned the FPS genre

9. God of War

Pushed the PS2 to its limits with great gameplay, graphics, and story

10. Madden 2005

Gameplay-wise, still the best Madden that has been released. Current-gen versions still haven't caught up.

I'm not going to combine different games into one series (i.e. I will treat all GTA games as single games).

1. Vice City
2. San Andreas
3. GTA 3
4. Battlezone
5. Mario Brothers
6. Kid Chameleon
7. RE4
8. Ghosts & Goblins (sometimes Ghouls and Ghosts)
9. Ratchet and Clank TOD
10. R6 Vegas
11. Tempest (couldn't fit them into 10)

Honorable mentions: Gradius, Infamous, Fallout 3, Resistance FOM, Shadow of Colossus, various Zeldas, the first several Sonics, Donkey Kong, GTA4 (Lost and the Damned > original story imo)

I was a Battlezone freak as a kid. Even to this day, the PS2 version of it is excellent; I'd say it's identical to the original coin-op.

NBA Hangtime
Street Fighter II
Pac-Man - gotta include this classic
Galaga
Track and Field
Karate Champ
Saturday Night Slam Masters
Super Dodge Ball
720 Degrees

I'll follow you on the coin-ops:

Any Williams game but my favorites:

Robotron - probably my all-time favorite if you can ever find one that works. Emulators all suck.

Joust - (played this for 20+ hours on 1 quarter once breaking the unofficial world record. And it was on the hardest possible setting.)

Defender/Stargate

Others:

Track and Field - did you ever get the alternating fingers down to move as fast as possible?

Asteroids -

Dig Dug

Tron

Tempest

Star Wars

Battle zone

Berzerk

Ok - that's more than 10. I was the local video game wizard as you might guess.

Edit: I left out a multiplayer FPS arcade game called WAR - fantastic game.

Now that's been supplanted by Megatouch . . . lol.

Got a new #2. (Unchartded: Among Thieves). It's actually 1a. GTA4 isn't far ahead of it. I just can't get enough of GTA4, though. When the replay ability is through the roof, it's got to be #1.

also going add Darksiders. Maybe not top 10, but damn close. It's a combination of three awesome games... Zelda, GOW and Soul Reaver. If you haven't played it, you're missing out. GREAT GAME...

goinh to have to redo my list. need to add heavenly sword, Darksiders and Unchartded: Among Thieves

I'm shocked more people didn't put Chrono Trigger. It is arguably the best RPG ever made, (I'd put FF7 slightly higher). Just a great all around game, I still play it every few years.

So my list:
Chrono Trigger
FF3, FF7, FF10, FF12
Metal Gear Solid
WoW
Goldeneye
Mario RPG
Zelda Ocarina of Time
Zelda Twilight Princess

and one that isn't that well known but is one of my favorite games because I love RPGs and this one added the benefit of getting to really do something during the
battles, Legend of Dragoon.

Counter strike
Half life series
Chrono trigger / chrono cross
Fallout 3
Mass effect 2
metal gear solid
Socom (only for the fact it was the first truly succesful console online game)
Gta 3
World of warcraft
Starcraft

Honorable mentions-
Earth defense force 2017 (best value game, period)
Mario games / zelda games (which increasingly converge)
Metroid (all metroid games are great, not top 10)
Castlevania: symphony of the night
Ffvii
Rez (if you bought this game for the ps2 show it some love, first ever art game I think)
Shenmu
Resident evil 4
Diablo 2
Bioshock
Braid
Modern warfare 1/2
Battlefield series (counter strike does it better)
Uncharted 1/2 (great game, top25 yes, 10, no)

This off the top of my head. Also, I love older games but if they aren't an rpg they don't stand the test of time well (I beat chrono trigger on my phone haha). It is hard to put together a list, because top ten could mean so many things. There are too many metrics for judging a game.

Edit-- upon reading other lists more honorable mentions-

Wcw vs nwo world tour /revenge / thq aki n64 games (thanks helix for reminding me of this gem of a wrestling game, second best wrestling game ever)
Fire pro wrestling (best wrestling game ever, but you needed to get a japanese n64 converter to play it)
Ico / shadow (beautiful game, just brilliant)
Body Harvest (what became rockstars first open world game on the n64)
KoTOR (mass effect 2 was better but kotor was a whole wall of amazing)
Super smash brothers
Fall Down (calculator game)
Little big planet
Gears of war (altough, the first game that was hard core on the cover aspect could have been an n64 game but that failed).
Goldeneye perfect dark (proved a fps could work on a console, up till that point most console fps had really blown. Especially doom 64)

gatorr4life

Uncharted 2 only a honerable mention? Come on....

As for "there are to many metrics for judging game", I agree. It's difficult, but fun to attempt. I broke it down to replay-ability, game play (how it plays/feels), story, and flat out awesomness of the game. lol Graphics are nice, but not really something you can use, for obvious reasons. Sometimes, though, games like Uncharted 2 are so damn beautiful, you have to factor it in.

Gotta say, I'm impressed with how much love Chrono Trigger is getting. Still one of my favorite games to this day.

Uncharted 2 is also great, has just about everything going for it.

I really like Batman: Arkhum Asylum. If you were a fan of Batman: The Animated Series growing up, then this is a must play. And even if you weren't you might enjoy it.

Currently playing through Fallout 3 and Red Dead Redemption.

I absolutely loved Fallout 3. Great game. I'm counting down the days until Fallout Vegas. As for Batman: Arkhum Asylum, I played it half way through and strangely got disinterested in it. Solid game though.

I think you and I have much the same taste in video games. I would have to agree with you on the N64 WcW Revenge title. I remember at the time I was living with 3 other guys while in college and we had some downright crazy gaming sessions with this game. I'm talking about sleepless nights, missed school, tons of broken controllers as well as some lost tempers. Wow those were good times as I pummeled my rooommates with Rowdy Roddy Pipper in a royal rumble!!!! I still have my N64 now I just need to find that game to complete my collection of classics that include Mario Cart, and Perfect Dark.

I would also have to include Counter Strike in the early days (prior to the rampant hacking) when I could mow down an entire team with my Awp on Dawn! Also the original Call of Duty whose single player campaign was epic at the time.

If I had to go old school arcade style I would go with NBA Jams and 720 and of course I cant believe noone mentioned Gauntlet !!!

Donkey Kong was hard as hell, too. lol I think nintendo games were the hardest games period. You'd get like 3 continues to be the entire game! Then cheat codes started coming out, which made things a lot easier. I think every body on this thread remembers the famous...up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, a, b, a, select , start code. lol

Deus Ex? What's that?

It's considered one of the best PC games of all time. It came out in 2000 so it's a little old. It's really fun though. One of the first games that gives you a situation and lets you approach it any way you want. It's an FPS-RPG. It has one of the best storylines ever which is nuts for a game that came out in '00. It also has a dialogue system like Mass Effect's.

Here's the intro:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vpGmVaK_GY

The 3rd one is coming out next year, the second came out in like '05 and it sucked. The second one was made by different people though.

Here's trailer for Deus Ex 3:

gatorr4life, same with me with the exception of a few games (Deus Ex, Crysis).

Frank, I agree. I remember when I was little I believed the bigfoot rumors and I would just run around in the forest for hours trying to find it lol.

@gatorr, he is a quick summary of Deus Ex:
Deus Ex (The original game) takes place in 2052 after a rogue organization Majestic 12(MJ-12) attempts to take over the world by secretly releasing a virus only they have a cure for. The game is played through the eyes of rookie UNATCO agent J.C. Denton, who through the course of the game discovers the true identity of MJ-12 as a rogue offshoot of the once powerful Illuminati. The story ends with a final confrontation with Bob Page, leader of MJ-12, and a moral decision for J.C. Denton to seize power for himself, restore power to the Illuminati or destroy the work of MJ-12 entirely and possibly create a new global dark age.

Deus Ex is a action role-playing game developed by Ion Storm Inc. and published by Eidos Interactive in the year 2000, which combines gameplay elements of first-person shooters with those of role playing games. The game received almost worldwide critical and industry acclaim, including being named "Best PC Game of All Time" in PC Gamer's Top 100 PC Games and in a poll carried out by UK gaming magazine PC Zone. It was a frequent candidate for and winner of Game of the Year awards, drawing praise for its pioneering designs in player choice and multiple narrative paths. It has sold more than 1 million copies, as of April 23, 2009.

Crysis (aka let's see how many uncompressed textures we can cram on screen at once) is overrated. Poorly coded game designed to sell graphics cards.

Also not a fan of GTA: SA. GTA as a series had kind of gotten old for me halfway through Vice City. The series does a lot of things, but none of them remarkably, and the graphical issues with SA (absurd amounts of pop-in despite low overall polygonal and texture detail) were a big distraction for me. IMO, Rockstar bit off more than it could chew for SA with the generation of hardware at the time.

I thought Crysis was an excellent game. The graphics are bar none. The gameplay itself is great. I love how as you get further into the game the island opens up more. The tank level was my favorite because you suddenly are in this enormous, open area.

Mods make the game even better.

Contra, though, may actually be my favorite game of all time. Super C on SNES wasn't too bad either. Except they added a few top view levels, which I did not like.

They tried to make one on the PS2 which was an miserable failure.

They didn't actually start until after fallout 3. They have stated as such in interviews.

The new engine has better draw distance and lighting. And bethesda can't miss on elder scrolls. It is just not possible.

These statements are equivalent; the sun will rise tomorrow, bethesda will knock it out the park with the next elder scrolls game.

IMO Socom puts all these new games of that genre to shame. Nothing beat that feeling when you were really on fire and made a come back win when you were the last man on your team and they had 6 or 7. It was a game that rewarded strategy and patience.

Oh man, no doubt!

I was playing Breach at Enowapi. I was on the seals. It was just me vs. 4 people. I had the satchel outside the back bridge. I dropped the satchel, right after the last person on my team died by a PMN mine. It made it look like he had the bomb and that he dropped it after he died.. I dropped back about 30 yards from it and waiting to see if they would try to camp the bomb, two of them did. two easy kills.

Then I scanned the cliff inside their breach for snipers. There was none, so I climbed up into the RPG turrent and bombarded their camp with grendades and hit another one.

I then picked up the bomb and entered their breach camp. I figured the last guy would be camping the underground bomb plant. It has two entrances. So I tossed a grenade to the back entrance, to draw his attention to it. It apparently worked, because I rushed into the front and saw him hiding behind the corner watching the back of bomb plant entrance. An easy kill.

That was the final round. My teammates were talking about that win all night. The false sense of accomplishment I got from that win was off the charts.

But the best part of SOCOM (2), is the teamwork. You have to use great teamwork and communication most of the time to succeed. You'll occationally have a great comeback win like the one from above. But if you don't work as a team, you'll get demolished 99.99% of the time.

Picking up bodies and throwing them around the room NEVER gets old. the sheer physics of it just boggles my mind. They make it look so real. Like a freaking rag doll getting tossed around. Makes me laugh every time. Also can't get get enough of the impalements. Spearing a necro to the wall is hilarious.

I would need to revise my top 10 and put Dead Space 2 in there. DS1 is great, but DS2 completely takes it to a new level. Isaac, as a character, was awesome. I usually don't get into video games to the point where I care about a character but I was always wanting to see Isaac succeed and you felt bad for him in the game. The last 10 minutes of the game is one of the most epic finales you will ever see.

I'm pretty sure Crysis 2 is also about to have a reservation in my top 10

When I was like 7 we had an Atari 2600 and we played Kangaroo, Space Invaders, Chopper Command, Pitfall, Centipede, Lock N Chase, Atlantis, Missile Command, Berzerk, Maze Kraze, Frogger, and others ALL. THE. TIME. and my mother got sick of it and swore she would never let us have another video game system, so this means, we never had an NES which I wanted worse than anything, and we never had an SNES for this reason either, she swore we would never have a Nintendo. Well one Christmas my brothers wanted these RC cars that cost $70 each, and we lived on a dirt road and she knew they would be busted in like 30 seconds once they got them, so she asked me if it might be better to get a "Sego." I was like, you mean a Sega? Like a Sega Genesis?

I said yeah,

that would be cool.

(Inside I was flipping out)

So that year we got a Sega Genesis with Sonic packed in. We eventually had like all of 6 whole games.

Sonic,
Sonic 2,
Sonic 3,
Sonic and Knuckles,
Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP
and Columns.

Like I said, my mother had it in for video games and we almost never got any. I bought every one of those except Sonic.

My brothers and I were never impressed with the Playstation, not the least of which was because it was ridiculously expensive and we liked sprites better than polygons. I always thought the N64 was overpriced as well as the SNES, the games on the SNES just did not seem as cool to me as what was on the Genesis.

I got the Sega Dreamcast on 9/9/99.
For Dreamcast, my personal favorite console, I bought
Sonic Adventure
Soul Calibur
Powerstone
NFL 2k

I would have bought more but it was around this time I got my first computer, a Power Mac G4.

I proceeded to play Unreal Tournament everyday for 4 hours from 2000 until 2002.
Then I played Battlefield 1942 and all it's expansions until 2004.

I also bought an xbox in 2003. I bought an xbox instead of the PS2 because of the price being better, xbox live, and the 8 gig hard drive. I felt like the PS2 was just more money for less.

I had:
Halo
Halo 2
Top Spin
NCAA Football 2004
Knights of the Old Republic II

I played Battlefield 2 and 2142 the rest of the time.

Then World of Warcraft happened.

That's really all I have to say about that.

Around 2008 I started feeling really bad about never getting a PS2, it was like, that hot chick that you just really wish you had asked out that one time. So I picked up a slim and got

Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec
Gran Turismo 4
God of War
God of War II
SSX Tricky
Resident Evil 4

I love the PS2. I'm thinking about getting another one now that Target is sticking them on clearance.

As for Nintendo games, I always wanted Super Mario games, and just never had the chance. I never played any FF games either. It's not that I'm a fanboy, it's just by the time I could get them there was something better taking up my attention. Does this explain things well enough? lol

Well then! Lol you know, I had the sega too but for some reason it never really impressed me. I mean, the stystem was solid but I truly can't think of any great games off the top of my head. Either way, I hear ya. That's a funny story about your mom. I remember my dad came home hammered one night. I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. He got pissed off at my brother and I and threw our nintendo out in the trash! Lol after he went to sleep, my mom went out and grabbed it for us!

It is still so hard to pick games that are the "best" at something. Most games that were great really suck when you pick them back up. Few games truly stand the test of time (part of the reason I picked elder scrolls IV for the top).

My metric of evaluation is "when did this game become tedious." Elder Scrolls 4, I easily put over 250 hours into. Same with fallout 3 (I have a all 10/100 character), which actually didn't get boring until I one shotted a super mutant. And to finish out a list, the other side of the coin-

Most Overhyped Game-
GTA IV

Worst Sound in a Game-
Raven Squad (this is actually not debatable, I ended up having to play the game on mute)

Worst Game-

Well done on listing different categories. When I get around to it, i think I'll do the same. Though I have to disagree with you on gta4. You're nuts. That game is sick. One of, if not THE best game ever. And I'm not in the minority with that thinking. As for pure download, I assume you don't have a ps3. Dead nation is an awesome game.

I have a ps3.

Limbo is flat out amazing. It is the only game I am willing to watch someone play, it is calming and alarming. Beautiful and disturbing. GTA was hyped as best game ever pre-release, I didn't say it wasn't great... just not matched to the hype.

Also I didn't mind duke nukem forever, even on hard it was a pretty quick and easy game that mixed up the action. Plus it was at redbox, cost me $2. Was it worth $2? I think so.

Raven squad you would have to pay me to play again.

Gta4 did live up to the hype. How do you figure? I still play the game to this day. It never gets old...ever. It's the game that keeps on giving. I love every single aspect o the game. EVERY aspect.

I just expected something radically better than San Andreas. If you are supposed to be the best game to date you better bring something with an insane amount of depth, replayability, and just plain fun. In my opinion elder scrolls soundly beats gta in every category, but I am willing to concede that it may be because of my preferences. I felt it was a solid game which did not drastically improve on game play elements from San Andreas, not the "half life" of the current Gen.

gatorr4life
07-17-2011, 04:26 PM
"replayability/ just plain fun"? Gta4 has endless replay ability. And that's not even going online. Going online is even more ridiculous! Fun? Fun? How can you not have fun in this game? Rampages NEVET get old.

Elder scrolls is a well done game, I did enjoy it. But it's sooooo slow. Gta4 is instant action whenever you want it, however you want it. I will definitely concede elder scrolls4 is much more deep. Also, let's not forget graphics. Gta4 is on another planet.

That being said, I can't wait for skyrim. THAT is going to be epic. Then again, so will gta5.

Ericgraves
07-17-2011, 05:46 PM
GTA just got boring for me, but I enjoy reading all the books in the library of elder scrolls and doing all the god quests. Being completely immersed in not only the story of the game but by the different cultures, the histories, and the mythology of the world created. GTA is a very surface experience, you see what you get. Elder Scrolls is an ice berg that can be enjoyed and appreciated on many different levels.

Furthermore remember it was a criticism on hype of the game, not the game itself. Honestly this is like saying I felt the game was a 90/100, but it was being hyped as the best game of all time. And it is just an opinion, I have my reasons for the opinion obviously yours differ, so jot down your list.

That's why I play games on PC. When you think you've done everything you can turn to mods. I have real life cars in my GTA4, Lambos, Ferraris, Fords, Chevys. I also have the graphics modded and it looks ridiculous.

Also, they're supposedly going to be announcing GTA5 by the end of summer. For anyone who wants a modern San Andreas, I recommend Saints Row. GTA4 was more realistic, where-as SR is more ridiculous fun.

Best Game-
Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Best Multiplayer-
SOCOM 2 for online multiplayer. Goldeneye, NHL 94, WCW/NWO World Tour, or Mario Kart 64 for old school split screen multiplayer.

Best "adventure" game-
Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Best Sandbox-

Best Game You Have Never Played-

Best Puzzle Game-

Best Graphics-

Most Overhyped Game-

GTA4 is a mainstream game. I'd think a lot of people have played it.

And for graphics are you doing purely console? Uncharted no doubt has some of the best looking console graphics I'd even consider Killzone 3 or Forza 4. But if we're doing overall graphics I don't think anything touches the PC version of Crysis 2. Plus, Battlefield 3 is about to come out and that game will be neck and neck with Crysis 2.

So basically you like to sit there and read/ immerse yourself in a fantasy style game, while I like to go action times 10, whenever I want it. (and awesome graphics, of course) here's the thing, I stopped playing RPGs around FF7. I just don't have the patience for it anymore. However, games like mass effect do peak my interest. They blend rpg elements with combat, quite nicely. I'm hoping skyrum has better combat than elder scrolls. I'm sorry, I just can't get into that slow pace grinding like I used to. I'm not going to lie, I used to be a huge rpg fan. I remember beating games like legend of mana, FF 1-7, chronotrigger and many more. Good times....

As for gta4, that game is just on another planet. I've never met anyone that didn't think it wasn't one of the greatest games they've ever played. Look at megacritic... I believe it's almost at the top of the list.

Still own it. Lol classic, indeed. Out of all the rpg's I played, I enjoyed destiny of an emperor for nes the most. Wasn't your typical rpg, but it had most the same elements as any rpg at the time. Buying armor, leveling up and randomly getting attacked while roaming. The only difference was it was based on Asian generals fighting for castles etc... Obviously more to the story but that's what you're doing. Going from castle to castle and taking over. Man I loved that game. Still own it, as well.

See, I'm sort of the opposite. It seems the older I get the more tired out I get with games that are constant action. I've been drawn more to RPGs and games like Fallout lately because there's a nice blend of important decision making and strategy coupled with some good action.

I am the same way. I used to only play action or sports games and now the only games I really get into are the RPGs. And I don't think I ever played my first one until KOTOR came out.

Never really got into the GTA series. I think they are fun good games but I eventually got bored with it, just started to get really repetitive to me. Felt the same way about Red Dead.

I have kind of fallen into a place where the games either have to be fast paced 10-12 hours of gameplay or slower paced RPGs that can take forever to finish.

Dragon Age: Origins.

I think you may have said you played it.

But with the DLC that is merged into the main game (Ostagar, Stone prisoner, Wardens Keep), and the Awakening expansion, it is easily 90 hours worth of gameplay if you're thorough and actually pay attention to the storyline and lore.
The other 3 DLC probably add another 10 hours, but are loosely linked to the main plot. (Lilliana's song and the darkspawn chronical are a complete waste of time imo).

DA:O is definitely one of my favorite RPGs of all time. What a great disappointment DA2 was....

Uncharted 3 and skyrum will be the top two games of the year, IMO. Skyrum will be such a deep experience, though, that it's going to be really hard to beat. Good thing I don't have to just choose one. Unfortunately, they're all coming out around the same time. And they're not exactly cheap! It would be nice if developers would choose Summer months for a change. If the game is good/great, it's going to sell, regardless of the time of year. Gta4 is proof of that! (April) As is red dead, I believe.

This.

I expect the competition for game of the year to be uncharted 3, batman, skyrim, deus ex, and gears of war.

Some lists may include battlefield or mw3 but I doubt either has a serious chance. Unfortunately I can not remember any games that have come out this year.

I think Battlefield 3 will definitely be in the GotY running. I know the multiplayer will be the best of any game this year, easily. But after seeing some of the campaign, which we didn't know much about at all until recently, I am just in awe of BF3. I have never seen such a cool looking campaign in a video game. I was shocked to see how good the voice acting was, which was phenomenal. And I hate to say it here, but truthfully, BF3 might not beat MW3 in sales, but in terms of quality of game, BF3 is going to run over MW3, back up over it and run over it again. Quality wise, MW3 stands no chance, IMO.

But the truth is it has some touch competition this year. I really do think the last 3 games standing will be Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Batman: AC and BF3. Skyrim IMO will win it, Elder Scrolls always wins. This might be the toughest year, IMO for GotY. Too many good games. This is 2004 (Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Far Cry, Doom 3) and 2007 (Halo 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4) all over again. Too many great games, too hard to choose GotY.

As for the BF3 thing, here's a video that I linked in another thread. This game looks unbelievable:

Game_of_the_Year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_the_Year)

There's some questionable wins in there.

Gears of War and Zelda swept the 2006 wins, I wouldn't say either is better than Oblivion. But that's me.

I actually used to dislike video games, except for the occasional Madden/NFL 2K game. Halo 2 was what really got me into games, I used to be stereotypical, thinking they were nerdy and dumb and one day I was getting a bunch of people for a game of football and went into my friends house and he was playing Halo 2, he didn't want to come play and asked me to play some Halo. I refused but then he told me he'd play football if I played a couple games of Halo, so I did. I got hooked, we ended up playing for like 3 hours. After that I got Halo 2. But that's how I got started..

Anyways, here are my GotYs if I were to choose, from 2000-2010:

2010: Metro 2033
2009: Call of Duty: MW2
2008: Fallout 3
2007: BioShock
2006: Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion
2005: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
2004: Half-Life 2
2003: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
2002: SOCOM: US Navy SEALs
2001: Grand Theft Auto III
2000: Deus Ex

Elder Scrolls is a long term game that is too complicated for most.

Gamers want simple and quick, elder scrolls is not that. But for people like myself it is worth every penny. I am a little upset they took out the complicated leveling system that allowed for massively overpowered characters if you knew what you were doing.

Yeah, I had my blade and heavy armor skills at 100 in Oblivion and could pretty much dominate anything except the high level Daedra. My favorite though was Morrowind, they went so in-depth with the skillsets in Morrowind, it was awesome. Morrowind had a lot more stuff than Oblivion did, weapons, armor, richer skill sets, enemies.

I do like the Skyrim skillset too, though. How you can choose your skills by using them rather than picking them. There are some skills I never took the time to level up in Oblivion because I didn't use them as much, but at some times would've been better off in a fight with them. For instance, I always use swords in Elder Scrolls games, they're my weapon of choice, so I always have a very high blade skill. I also use Heavy Armor a lot. But like I said, in Oblivion when I would fight higher level Daedra, especially the big alligator ones, I'd have trouble with them if I got in close with a sword because they did so much damage. And I'd usually try to get distance and use lightning attacks and fireballs with the Destruction skill, but it was never high enough to where I could do as much damage as I would have liked, so I'd have to mix it up with blade attacks here and there and it would be kind of a pain sometimes.

Morrowind especially, because Morrowind was A LOT tougher than Oblivion. That's why I liked Morrowind more, though, too. There were places that you just could not go in Morrowind when you started because you'd get your ass handed to you. And I liked the level system better in Morrowind, in Oblivion and Fallout the enemies leveled with you. In Morrowind the enemies seemed to be a set level which meant there were places you couldn't even go to until you were a certain level because you'd just get a beatdown, so if you went to the northern area of Vvardenfell there were a couple caves with level 20+ Daedra, so you couldn't go in there until you were a level 20, or close to that with your skills distributed properly. Especially on Solstheim, I remember in Morrowind most of the Werewolves were level 30+, so you couldn't fight them until you got near or to level 30. That just feels like a better system to me.

I never played morrowind. My first introduction was oblivion. I really enjoyed it. After putting in a ton of hours, my ps3 and copy of the game got stolen. I didn't really like the fighting style, but it was overall a really cool/different game that I had never seen before. Of course, me being the shooter fan, I instantly gravitated towards fallout 3, after that. Loved it... Then, Fallout: Vegas came along and the honeymoon was over. All the bugs really, really pissed me off. Yes, Fallout 3 had bugs too, but I had never played a game like that so I didn't really care. Barring something stupid, I should be picking up skyrum--- eventually.

Interesting. While I respect your statements, I disagree. Oblivion had much more content and was more difficult.

You are correct oblivions mobs leveled with you while morrowinds were pre set. The fact the mobs in oblivion get harder as the game goes on is evidence that you didn't do controlled leveling. Controlled leveling is a labor of love, but it is the best day to control the difficulty of the mobs. Without controlled leveling the game can become insanely hard as time goes on. With controlled leveling you won't have any problems.

Also as far as content, the god quests alone were amazing. But there were more dungeons, more area to cover, and better end game activities. Furthermore there add ons were superior. Horses with armor? Yes please! But seriously blood trials was good but shivering isles was flat out amazing.

They could have released Elder Scrolls: Shivering Isles as a stand alone game and I don't think anyone would have complained. While I do think morrowind had a better story and better locations, oblivion had a pissed off unicorn and the jaberwocky stick which could turn the final dragon into the sheep and allow you to kill it.

Another big problem with morrowind was You would be walking along and a character in the main storyline would die for no reason and you would be screwed. That being said, would I had over $60 for an updated hd elder scrolls morrowind? Yes. Morrowins was amazing and having recently played it again I wonder what they could have done with newer consoles.

Oblivion was a bigger landscape and had more areas, but in terms of variety of enemies, weapon variety and skills, Morrowind had a lot more. Instead of a single blade skill like in Oblivion, Morrowind had Long Blade, Medium Blade and Short Blade. Long Blade was strictly for claymores, I think? Medium was single handed longswords and short was daggers and knives. Then you had a spears skill, there were 3 different armor skills. And there were more armor/weapon types.

Dagoth Ur was the coolest boss of the Elder Scrolls games, in Oblivion they had Mehrunes Dagon but you didn't even know much about him or even see him until the end of the game, while in Morrowind for the whole game you're hearing how powerful Dagoth Ur is and what he can do if he can escape Red Mountain, although Alduin, the main Dragon in Skyrim might take the cake. Dagoth Ur was awesome. The other thing I liked in Morrowind was you could start the game off and go right to Red Mountain and try and kill Dagoth Ur, although you wouldn't even make it a quarter up the mountain without getting absolutely trashed by ash zombies. And if you were lucky enough to somehow make it inside of the mountain, you would never make it to Dagoth Ur.

The only gripes I had with Morrowind were the fact there was no fast travel except for the silt striders and even then, they only took you to certain towns so you might go to a town and still have to walk forever to get somewhere. The second issue is, of course, the damn cliff racers.

No particular order

SOCOM 2 (PS2)
NCAA Football (Series)
Contra (NES)
Star Tropics (NES)
Final Fantasy 3 (It's actually 6, but was released in the US as 3)
Metroid (NES)
Golden Eye (N64)
NBA Live 96 (First game to add the cross over dribble)
U.S. Navy Fighters 97 (PC)
BASE WARS!!!!! (NES)

I put these on there based on what I considered quality for its time. Some of the older games are still better than their modern counterparts. (Golden Eye, SOCOM2)

Skyrim is definitely on this list now.

Skyrim could literally have no storyline or quests, and I would still enjoy it for hours just exploring the map.

I need to buy Skyrum!

Yes, you do!!!

My revised list:

1. Skyrim
2. Deus Ex
3. Half-Life
4. Morrowind
5. Battlefield 3
6. Crysis
7. Half-Life 2
8. Dead Space 2
9. Metro 2033
10. STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl

Honorable mentions:
Fallout 3, Fallout: NV, Crysis 2, GTA San Andreas, Oblivion

Too bad most of you don't play on PC, STALKER is an excellent, excellent game. It's very well known in the PC community and considered one of the greats amongst Half-Life, Crysis and other big PC games, but it kind of went under the radar. The console crowd missed a true gem by not being able to play it.

Dont know if I ever made a list in this thread but Skyrim is definitely one of my top 5.

A lot of more recent games would also make my list.

Oblivion
Fallout
KOTOR
Uncharted
Arkham City/Asylum

Then some older ones
Mortal Kombat
Street Fighter 2
Sonic
Crash Bandicoot
NCAA Football 2003
NBA Live 98

I cant count so thats probably not ten. And I am sure if I thought about it I could list even more.

The XBOX 360 gets a ton of use at my apartment. It used to be mostly watching DVDs or videos on Netlfix, but that's probably only 50% of the usage now.

Currently, COD: MW3 and Arkham City get played the most. That will probably change in a month once we get bored of them.

I'm horrible at any of the shooter games, and don't have the patience for long story games other than Zelda so I just watch them play Arkham City while I work on my computer.

We still play Rock Band 3 a lot when we have people over. (Almost always on the Easy level, sometimes on Medium if we're feeling confident.) I've spent WAY too much money on downloading songs and replacing all of the instruments, but it's a lot of fun when we have friends over.

I have the new NCAA '12 football game, but haven't even taken it out of the wrapper. I also have NHL '12 and FIFA '12, but haven't played either more than an hour each.

My nephew (10 years old) and I really enjoy playing the LEGO games on the Wii when I visit my family. The Star Wars ones are the most fun, but the Indiana Jones and Harry Potter ones are ok too. I really like the cooperative mode since we're both pretty bad at most other games.
