Good story about Gillespie coaching at UT. He discusses his playing days, as he went 2-2 vs. Tennessee.

Robert Gillespie was a part of some of the most memorable, thrilling and tightly contested games in the Tennessee-Florida football rivalry.

As of March 1st, he’s on a different side.

The former Florida running back was hired as the new running backs coach at Tennessee after stints at South Carolina, Oklahoma State and, most recently, West Virginia......

Me too. Oh, and Dockett, you're a dirty player, thanks again.

My thoughts exactly. Docket = Trash, always will.

Good for Robert Gillespie! Good luck, all but one day a year!

Tenn-UF was white hot in the 90's and early 00's. History has been very kind to Phil Fulmer. Very kind. Most people thought he was a buffoon who could recruit real well while he was there.

He gets much more credit now.

I don't think the Tenn-UF rivalry was as enjoyable form the Vol perspective, I am a neutral fan so I enjoyed the big games, Gators obviously got the best of it. Of course, when the Vols did win, 98 and 01, for example, it was freakin' epic.

The 01 win is just shocking to me even to this day.

I can't believe they beat that Gator team.

In The Swamp.

That just didn't happen back then if you were dressed like a pumpkin and dating your cousin.

Spurrier was too concerned with what Darnell Dockett did during the previous weeks game than he was getting the team ready to play. If that game had been played on 9/15, as originally scheduled, UF would have played for the national championship. Instead we blew out Syracuse and Donovan McNabb in Spurrier's last game as UF coach....

Spuriers last game was against maryland, syracuse was 98.

Your first sentence is false too.

While we weren't sharp vs UT- that had more to do with playing USCe, FSU and then UT in successive games. USCe was ranked #14 and could have won the East with a win, FSU is FSU, and we probably took UT lightly since they struggled to beat UK the week before.

It's too bad- but it's very difficult to bring your "A" game each and every week.

The very reason we should stay away from big programs that are OC. Anyway, good for Gillespie and best of luck to him except when we meet. SHHHHHHH Gator bait

The '98-'06 games were classics and I even enjoyed the games we lost. I hope we can get back to that and make this a fun series again. We aren't holding up our end right now.

I'm with you on that. Hope he has success in his coaching role at Tennessee. Just can't wish him good luck when the Volunteers play the Gators.

Believe we played Syracuse at the end of 1998 not 2001. To end the 2001 season we destroyed ACC champ Maryland.

Roger that...my bad. Still believe spurrier was too concerned w bitching about Dockett than getting us ready for 18 point underdog UT.

Does UT miss Fulmer now?

Right, so much so that Tenn was all but dead the following week vs LSU for the SECCG. They sold out to beat UF and had nothing left against an overall inferior LSU team.

This is what non- athletes don't understand. It's easy to sit on the sidelines and say to the players "Give it all you got and play each play like it's the most important of your lives- because it is." As a side note- Fulmer actually said the latter to his team during the 90s. No, no, no. It's why they played so tight against us- IMO.

The fact is it's impossible to have that kind of urgency all the time. You can play at a high level, you can be strong fundamentally, but you can't give your "A" game every single week.

This is what happened to us in 2001, and it's what happened to UT the next week.

He'll make $300K this year at Tennessee...which is what he would have made if he stayed at WV.

But now he's broken into coaching in the SEC, and he's coaching an offense that runs out of the spread more than the air raid.

Great Gator, but that story did not omit what I remember. Gillespie should have scored on that 36-yard pass and catch. That would have changed the whole complexion of that game. I couldn't believe he didn't score and then we fumble one play later. That was a painful defeat.

Other than that, good luck Dizzy. Go get em unless you are playing us.

We couldn't stop the run that game and I believe UT had a great DL that year. Plus Graham was out which hurt our running game thanks to Dockett. John Henderson, Jason Witten and Will Overstreet (2 of 3 long time NFL vets and Will drafted in the third round) put a lot of pressure on Rex too given our lack of a running game.

If you are referring to my post, we are talking about two different games.
