I was there the year Ben Crenshaw won. We sat in the front row of the bleachers right behind #16 (par 3). The guy to the right of me got drilled by a ball from Jack Nicklaus and the guy to the left of me got drilled by a ball by Sandy Lyle. Surprised how short they were.

I wouldn't have minded taking a lump by Nicklaus. Would have been like a battle scar.

There was a guy reclining in a beach chair (one of those low ones) a few feet off the green. He was facing the tee box reading a newspaper (during play!) A player hit his tee ball that went right thru the paper and drilled him in the gut. He rolled out of the chair moaning and the player's ball rolled on the green a few feet from the pin. He came up and thanked the guy rolling around. That would have been a classic if caught on TV.

I was 15 feet from Crenshaw looking right down his line as he sank his putt.
