That may even be how Gillespie considers the move but I still like the hire. He is young and has prior experience in the SEC as both a coach and a player and comes to us from a spread offense. I say always hire the most qualified people who want your opening regardless of how long they can be retained.

Hope does well except when he coaches against the Gators. Maybe he can return to the Orange and Blue someday.

98-01. The true definition of a "serviceable" player. I remember him more for some of the ridiculous blocks that he threw, than for being a dominant force running the ball. He didn't have the power Graham had, and the offense was definitely different when EG was hurt. Gillespie was more of a shifty, third-down type of back. He was a great compliment to Graham; he just wasn't the type of 'back to build an offense around.

I'm glad he took this job. Good for him.

1998-2001 He split time with Earnest Graham. I remember him as a good receiving back. He rushed for 1,800 yards in his career as well as having over 1,000 yards receiving. He played two years under Spurrier with the Redskins and has coached at South Carolina, Ok State and West Virginia.

It said in a article that Muschamp offered him a job in 2011 and he turned him down. Anyone know what that was about?

My sources say yes... And by sources I mean my magic 8 ball.

It's off topic but offseason so indulge me if you will. In 1991, both Florida and Tennessee had each others playbooks. Florida had UT's courtesy of a disgruntled former Tenn DB coach named Jack Sells who faxed it to former Tenn DB coach Ron Zook, then with the Gators. Tenn obtained Florida's playbook from a Florida defensive assistant named Dale Jones (now an assistant with Appalachian St) who was a former Tenn LB from '83-'86...also, Fulmer was so paranoid about this series that he gave third string backup QB Jeremy Bates a fake playbook in '95, so in case he had any conflict of loyalties and sent it to his brother James - a UF LB, no damage would be done.

I still remember Gillespie's sick triple spin TD run in the 2001-02 Orange Bowl against Maryland. If I had to guess, I'd say it was the last TD of Spurrier's tenure at Florida.

I remember that. Interesting story in Sept. 1991. Like going back to the Cold War days of the USA-USSR.

Ok maybe second to last TD: " Florida tacked on three scores in the third quarter. After Graham and Robert Gillespie scored on TD runs of six and 11 yards, respectively, the Gators showed no mercy. Grossman and Gaffney combined for a 33-yard TD pass that made it 49-10 with 2:52 left"

Exactly! Doug Dickey's last game as coach at UT was of course against Florida in the Gator Bowl which UF won 14-13. It was widely believed among Vol fans that Dickey threw this game after he took the Florida job. Between Dickey, Ray Graves, Bob Woodruff, Zook and Jim Bates there are an amazing number of ties between the two programs...of course, we sent you Don DeVoe in 1989 to sabotage your basketball season as revenge for the '69 Gator Bowl. Paybacks are Hell, Ray. lol

And I also remember that Gator Bowl Game 12/27/69 as well. And I remember the next morning the headline in The Miami Herald was: "Losing Team's Coach Becomes Winning Team's New Coach."

Good for Gillespie, he's a good Gator. We recruited him from high school out of Hattiesburg, MS. As noted above, he was a good receiving back. One year, SOS installed a very effective middle screen play for him and ran it repeatedly throughout the season.

Spurrier got inside Phil's head. It was amazing the things Fulmer did when he was faced with playing the Gators. Funny thing is, Fulmer was very patronizing the week he was facing the Zooker in 2002. Fulmer just knew that with Spurrier gone, he would beat the Gators. The Zooker went up to Knoxville and leveled Rocky Top in the pouring rain.
