Jeff Bush was asleep in his bed when he plummeted into the hole. Right after the ground started to give way in the Brandon home, his brother, Jeremy, frantically tried to keep Jeff from sinking into the hole.
Jeremy Bush said he heard screaming coming from his brother's bedroom and when he opened the door, all he saw was a piece of a mattress. Jeremy Bush said his brother's bed and dresser were missing and described the opening as a black hole.
"I jumped in the hole, tried digging him out and I couldn't get him. I heard screaming, hollering, but I could do nothing," Jeremy Bush said.
The first deputy on the scene pulled Jeremy Bush from the edge of the growing sinkhole, said Jessica Damico, a spokeswoman for the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.
"The mattress, the bed, everything was going down in the hole where the first person had gone," a law enforcement officer said. "Now, the second person is in the hole trying to save (his brother). They're not being successful, so (the deputy) just reacted and did what he had to do to get that person out."

One story says 20 ft deep 20 ft wide and the other says 50 ft deep 100 ft wide.
Small difference there.....

Horrible!
Don't you usually get some kind of warning or some evidence in the neighborhood that it is a danger area?

One of the articles says: The sinkhole was about 20 to 30 feet deep and 30 feet in diameter, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Chief Ron Rogers. A safety area of disturbed soil extends to about 100 feet from the center.

Probably yes, if it's a sinkhole. This situation is what the legislature now calls--Catastrophic Ground Cover Collapse--which gives little to no warning.

One of the articles says:
Yes I read that. The other article says
"The hole, estimated at 100 feet wide and 50 feet deep and still growing, is under the home, which is still standing."
I read them both.

Ugg -- I'm sure lots of people will joke about this but this is absolutely terrible.
Very sad to hear this. Can't even imagine how hard this must be to go through.
