Porsche is embracing the motorsports enthusiasm of a special group of talented young adults by sponsoring Gator Motorsports, the University of Florida’s official Formula SAE team, for the 2013 season.
The racing team, which is organized, led and staffed by students, was chosen by Porsche from a handful of qualified schools based on the team’s experience, dedication and overall spirit for motorsports. Over the next several months, Porsche experts and racing team members will work closely with the Gator Motorsports crew to design, construct and test a prototype car which they can proudly race at the Formula SAE competition.
Formula SAE calls on teams from more than 100 schools to build race cars from the ground up and manage a racing team in a real-world setting. At the national competition, teams will be scored in categories including budget and business acumen, vehicle acceleration and skid pad performance and overall design. To give the team a special edge, Porsche plans to host the entire Gator Motorsports team at the Porsche Sport Driving School (in Birmingham, Ala.) for a private program, and will also offer financial and consulting support.
As the official 2013 Formula SAE Factory Team of Porsche Cars North America, Gator Motorsports will create a Porsche-inspired livery for their FSAE race car. The team has also designed the livery for two 2013 911 Carrera S GRAND-AM Road Racing pace cars that will run at GRAND-AM of the Americas (Mar. 2; Austin, Texas) and the Porsche 250 (April 6; Birmingham, Ala.). The design, pictured here, pays homage to the 50th Anniversary of the Porsche 911, which Porsche is celebrating internationally this year.
