A young lady left this comment on our of our posts on Atlas Shrugged Today. (http://atlasshruggedtoday.wordpress.com/)
A completely unarguable point. It's this exact point that the conservatives and Republicans need to make every single day...

"Think about it – what is your biggest expense?
I always assumed it was our mortgage. Starting last month, January 2013, I began tracking our family’s contributions to the government. Not just payroll taxes, but every single nickel-and-dime tax. I’m sure I’m not catching all the hidden fees, buried in the cost of goods.
In January, our tax expense was 192% higher than our mortgage. The first 7 working days of the month were dedicated not to shelter & food, but to giving the government our hard-earned money. Yet the government is crying that they don’t have enough money. As this gets worse, we will be working for The Company Store, slaves to the USA."
And from TinCup..
"What has gone up faster? Your Income or Your Income Taxes?
Has your budget gone up 17% since 2009?
Who is in a better position to cut 2% from their budget – You or the Government?"

But just try to suggest that we're slaves and you get this "Oh, come ON!"

Well, maybe we can settle for whiners, if not outright persecuted.

Just wait until Obamacare kicks in, you'll be paying taxes just to stay alive with medical devices.

this is the point that I said was lost in the all of the Phil Michelson hoopla
that we get lost in the "he makes a lot of money" "he has no right to complain" "he didn't build that" or whatever
the important point that got missed (possibly by design) is that no one question just how much the government is actually taking

That's why I think people should get all the money THEY earned every paycheck and then have to sit down and pay a tax bill once a month. If people actually paid attention to what they are paying instead of thanking the gov't for letting them keep a portion of their paycheck more people would wake up.

and the funny thing is that the opposite is what many in government are advocating
many democrats wants a system where all pay goes through the government. they take out their share and then send the balance to the wage earner.

Aside from corporate taxes, there are federal excise taxes added to some goods and services that you buy that you never see. These are separate from sales taxes.
I doubt we could actually identify every tax we pay. Here's one list that was compiled that, again, I'm sure is incomplete:
Accounts Receivable Tax
Building Permit Tax
CDL license Tax
Cigarette Tax
Corporate Income Tax
Dog License Tax
Excise Taxes
Federal Income Tax
Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)
Fishing License Tax
Food License Tax
Fuel Permit Tax
Gasoline Tax
Gross Receipts Tax
Hunting License Tax
Inheritance Tax
Inventory Tax
IRS Interest Charges IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax)
Liquor Tax
Luxury Taxes
Marriage License Tax
Medicare Tax
Personal Property Tax
Property Tax
Real Estate Tax
Service Charge Tax
Social Security Tax
Road Usage Tax
Sales Tax
Recreational Vehicle Tax
School Tax
State Income Tax
State Unemployment Tax (SUTA)
Tangible Taxes
Telephone Federal Excise Tax
Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax
Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Taxes
Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax
Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax
Telephone State and Local Tax
Telephone Usage Charge Tax
Utility Taxes
Vehicle License Registration Tax
Vehicle Sales Tax
Watercraft Registration Tax
Well Permit Tax
Workers Compensation Tax

Heck, it's been more than 40 years since The Beatles wrote "The Taxman." The gov't found a way to get a cut out of nearly every single aspect of life. Of course, in return for all that taxation, we are promised ever more services and regulation of same. Reminds one of Reagan's quip about how gov't views business/people (paraphrase): If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. If it stops moving, subsidize it.

Notice one side chooses to mock this instead of defending or rebutting the fact. Of course, in their eyes the poster probably still isn't paying her fair share.

So you have a commenter who lumps local, state, and federal governments into a single entity.
That's neat. I'm sure she'd do well in a country without roads.

You are only 50% correct.
There will not be any balance to send back.
We would get vouchers to buy food and clothes from the local gov't commissary. Don't worry about eating or drinking healthy. Your local commissary will give you food packets of gov't approved food and beverages.
We would be given a house that fits our needs.
Needs defined by our gov't. If you have two kids you will be given a two bedroom one bathroom apartment. Don't worry about what to do if you have a third child. The gov't health care will take care of that.
Don't worry about buying a car. You can use the gov't provided mass transportation that picks up and drops off at a nearby street corner.
Don't worry about a pension or a retirement fund. When you are too old or feeble to work your health care plan will shorten your post working life. In other words you will not be a burden to anyone.
Don't worry about keeping up with the Jones's. They will have exactly what you have. Unless they have a gov't job.
If you don't want what the gov't says is good for you then get a gov't job and enjoy the special perks.

Taxes are an easy answer, but insurance is a close second. Add up the cost of your family's health, dental, life, auto, home, flood, etc and it's a pretty big number, cetainly way more than my food budget.
