In related news UM president Donna Shalala is calling for an end to this game immediately, obviously her team was not properly represented in the first half and any losing score should be stricken from the record. Shalala has been quoted as saying, "Obviously this game was tainted by the failed investigation into my university and any failure on the part of Miami from here forward will be a direct result of the witch hunt that has plagued us for far too long now. It is obvious to anyone watching that the NCAA has used illegal officials and they have abused their power by calling fouls on our players." Shalala noted also that since this game was not being watched by anyone other than people that wanted Miami to lose that it further proves her point that the NCAA hates Miami.

Wake's rpi is 159. Great job making the Florida Gulf Coast (108) look respectable. I have to laugh at the announcers who keep talking about how great WF is on their home court (9-7).

Surprising really as Wake isn't even good. At least the teams we've lost to don't have losing records like Wake does.

At least this means that media won't be able to justify Florida not being a #1 seed because they have a bad loss. Miami now has two losses that look much worse than Arkansas.

Wake Forest is terrible. They're not a home court warrior like Arkansas; they just lost to an awful Georgia Tech at home.

Inevitable loss, Miami has been winning games by the skin of their beak - 4 wins by an average of three points each.

They were fouling with 24 seconds left, pitiful & unnecessary.
We looked like that against arky in the first half

Even if they win the rest of their games don't they have too many bad losses to be considered a #1 seed?

I'd think so. If they lose to Duke, the #1 seed is definitely gone, as is a top ten human poll ranking.

02-23-2013, 03:15 PM
Not at all. A win at Duke and a 17-1 conference record will get them a #1 seed. Do I think that's likely to happen? No. But under your scenario, I don't know how they aren't a #1. For some reason, some folks on this board have downgraded the ACC to mid-major status.

I'm telling everyone now, mark down Miami for an early exit in the tournament on your brackets.
They're going to be an overconfident team with little to absolutely no tournament experience amongst their players.

The SEC is REALLY down this year...the ACC is only slightly better...ACC does have a lot of BAD teams this year...
Wake
GA Tech
VA Tech
F$U
BC
Clemson
Mid Tier in the ACC this year: UVA MD UNC NC State
Good teams: scUM and PUKE
Compare that to the SEC...very similar...

This is ridiculous, they have proven they have the metal to win close games, not like UF who can't ever win a close game....no way Miami can lose to a 161 rpi team, right?? ;)

And yet we are the one with the bad losses says the media/ESPN. I'm sure UM will only drop a couple spots while we dropped 5 after losing at Arky, a much better team than Wake. UM will still also most likely be talked about as a 1 seed.

Yes, I think the winning streak and expectations were starting to weigh on them. I seriously think this loss is actually good for them.
The really good thing is at least they don't have to bear the ignominy of a close loss (that some may view as a "choke" :joecool:)

Current RPI numbers along with the low quality of teams they'll play show that Miami could easily fall to 3rd before they play Duke. At this RPI & with two losses to sub-150 RPI teams, I don't see Miami remaining a #1 seed.
1 Duke - 0.6920
2 Miami FL - 0.6755
3 New Mexico - 0.6736
4 Florida - 0.6579

One loss to a sub-150 RPI team. FGCU is #108. Miami will be just fine with either a win over Duke or a deep run in ACC tourney. Maybe not a #1 seed, but probably no worse than a #2, assuming they win the ACC regular season at 16-2.

Look guys, Miami just got beat by 11-14 (prior to the game, 12-14 after), Wake Forest, who is playing in the ACC.
I assume this has to do with matchups, but still, that is quite the surprise.

I'm starting to take notice of New Mexico.....nice team

Miami has been struggling of late, but they are going to be a tough out regardless where they land. They can defend, they have good size in the paint, the ability to stretch the floor with Kadji, and one of the best two-way point guards in the nation. Not sure if they ever merited a top seed, though. The ACC isn't as bad as the SEC this season, but it isn't very good either. Big wins over Michigan State and Duke help their cause. Losses to Gulf Coast, Indiana State, and Wake won't, nor will the woodshedding from Zona.
A win over Duke and in the ACCs and they get a one. Anything less and they are probably a two, though the same thing holds as for us: so much depends upon what happens to the other teams.

Agree with all of this. I just find the constant diminishing of Miami on this board by some posters to be a bit petty. They are legit and have had a great season, despite the lack of b-ball pedigree (which is irrelevant, really).
Attempts to down-grade the ACC to mid-major status, or to say that the ACC is just as bad as the SEC this season is just not accurate. It is far from vintage ACC, but the SEC is almost historically down this year. Miami has had, and will continue to have more resume-building opportunities (i.e. games against Duke) than UF. That's just the nature of the leagues this year (due to Mizzou's and UK's inability this year to step us as a second elite SEC team).
Now that can go one of two ways for Miami. Another win against Duke (at Cameron or ACC tourney) and Miami is a very real threat for a #1 seed. Two losses to Duke (or an early exit in ACC tourney) and they could find themselves falling to the 3-line. In the end, I think Miami ends up a #2 seed. This is assuming they lose to Duke next week but finish as regular season ACC champs at 16-2. Obviously, an early flame-out in ACC tourney is something they want to avoid, regardless.

Miami is a rival, so negative comments from Gator fans is quite natural, especially in response to a few posters awhile back favoring the Canes in a matchup. Hard to believe any Gator would be surprised by that, even someone who has taken on the role of being the Canes number 1 defender on this board.
Bottom line - the winner of the UM/Duke game will be a number 1 seed, the loser probably a 2 seed.

Fair enough. I guess I don't really see Miami as a b-ball rival. I'm not surprised by the responses on this board, I just don't agree with the naysayers who feel Miami is a fluke. I guess we'll find out over the next 4 weeks, or as early as next Saturday vs. Duke.

I can assure you that Cane fans and the local media still see the Gators as rivals in every sport. I have already heard a few subtle jabs from Cane fans, "how does it feel to be ranked below the Canes", etc, etc. Of course after the Wake loss, they will all disappear for awhile, at least until the Duke game.
I do like their coach, tho, seems like a hard guy to root against. I dont think anyone here is saying they are a "fluke", just saying they are not a #1 seed and not better than UF. Flukes dont lead the ACC this late, even in a down year.
