United Arab Emirates pays millions for rebuilding of Joplin, MO

After a devastating tornado wreaked havoc on much of Joplin, Missouri in May of 2011 the town found a financial savior in an unlikely source: the United Arab Emirates.

The tornado, which killed 161 people and destroyed six public schools, had left the community in an almost hopeless situation until the UAE reached out through their embassy in Washington.

In lieu of the textbooks, the UAE made it possible for each student in Joplin, about 2,200 high schoolers, to have a MacBook laptop.

The nation has also put forth $5 million to rebuild a neonatal intensive-care unit in the town's hospital, which was also destroyed in the tornado.

It is a tangential point, but Muslim and Arab are not the same thing, although many Arabs are Muslims and vice versa.

Good to know our state and federal tax revenue structures are so messed up we need to rely on foreign charity to rebuild and educate our children when the worst happens. But hey, we've got some pretty sweet military hardware (and civilian vehicles) that will guzzle down vast quantities of UAE oil into the forseeable future, so its the least they could do. :)
