I'm thankful for the 2 NC's we received under Meyer's coaching. After all it took us 10 years to get our 2nd NC. For this, I thank you Urban.

My only issue is how he planned his exit strategy. "My health my health, etc..." Then he comes back, then his health again and takes a 1 year vacation to the media, then its OSU as his home. All this in a couple of years. It just looks like to most of GatorNation that he was fickle, delusional, or simple didn't care.

I like Meyer. I'm grateful for the championships.

What he built in Gainesville was great, just not sustainable. He realized it and stepped down.

That's the difference between what he did and SOS did, and what Saban has done in Alabama. Meyer is a great coach, produces immediate success, but not the type of program that can sustain an 8-10 year run (at least from what we have seen so far).

I'm glad we got him for the time that we did, and I'm glad we have WMC now.

Thankful for Meyer and his run.

Meyer said the Big 10 needs to change its recruiting culture and step it up. The SEC got more 4 and 5 star recruits out of Big 10 states the the Big 10 did.

Herbstreit is on saying that the Big 10 is living in its past rather than respecting its past while moving into the future. The have to get more aggressive. They could suffer when a committee is choosing the CFB playoff.

Of course they could suffer. They likely *will* suffer. Ironically, the Big 10 probably still has the best reputation after the SEC and Pac-12/14/16. A lot of SEC teams will get artificially inflated placements in the early goings of playoffs and we're very likely to hear every loss celebrated.

I got his autograph and a picture of him with my son prior to the 2008 championship year at the Meet the Gators event at the Odome. Guy didn't say two words to my boy, nor did he show any interest in being at the event at all. He's definitely not the Dos Equis guy.

But the haters can't stop bashing because they know Meyer is superior to Spurrier. Can Spurrier boast of four (Alex Smith, Tebow, Cam Newon and Braxton Miller) first-round picks at QB? Meyer can do that. Meyer's offense has generated three first-round picks at wide receiver. It produced two All-pro tight ends. Meyer developed the greatest rookie offensive lineman of all time, in Mike Pouncey.

Spurrier didn't develop a top-5 pick like Haden. He certainly didn't win two national championships. Meyer brought home two SEC titles, produced a Heisman trophy winner, went undefeated against Tennessee. Georgia. Florida. State and Miami. Meyer won big games. By big margins. On big stages. Bowden owned Spurrier.

Meyer laid the foundation for the Florida way. There is no other. The success Meyer brought to the University of Florida was incomprehendable. Amazing. He showed Florida how to win the right way. He did it with class; yet won with arrogance. His speech after the Ole Miss game has been forever erectid in Gator history.

Yeah. There were no first-round picks on the defensive line, except Jarvis Moss. Steve Harris, RayMac and Joe Cohen were marginal talents, sculpted and crafted with care by Meyer's staff. Chad Jackson clearly proved to be a bust. Bubba Caldwell didn't play up to his recruiting ranking, and Meyer took two average CBs (Ryan Smif and Reggie Lewis) and turned them into first-day picks.

The offensive line was okay, I'll give you that. But look at how Earl Everett and Brandon Siler have played as pros. Meyer did a malicious job of getting that unit to go above and beyond. The fact that Meyer even won ten games in 2006 is a testament to his supeerior coaching.

Couple things, Meyer didn't go undefeated against our rivals. Off the top of my head I can recall losses to UGA (2007) and FSU (2010) and I'm sure Charlie Strong, who was on Zook's staff as well, had something to do with the development of defensive players...just a little. Zook wasn't a great X and O's guy but he was one hell of a recruiter. You don't win a title with a bare cupboard. Why do Spurrier, Zook and Muschamp get dragged into these Meyer love/hate fest??

1) My point? Meyer developed Percy, Tebow and Spikes. He won two national championships with the three of them.
2) A friend of mine has a friend who knows Miller's aunt. The word from Columbus is that he'll be a first-round pick. Also, Meyer recruited Cam. 'Nuff said.
3) It really depends on how you look at it. Meyer lost to FSU after he had thrown in the towel; the Georgia loss came when Tebow was injured. Neither was a legitimate loss. That's what I hold.
4) But both of Meyer's SEC titles resulted in national championships. 'Nuff said.
5) Spurrier had a losing rekord versus Bowden. Meyer never lost to him. How can you compare them?
6) That's just not true.
7) I'll let you believe that if you want, but I know what I saw wif my own two eyeballs. Meyer's speech sent that team on a tear.

Meyer completely changed the culture of the program in 2005-06 that radically affected a slew if Zook players on the field and in the classroom. Steve Harris was the biggest change, but include RayMac, Joe Cohen, Dallas Baker and Brian Crum on that list for starters. Tebow, Harvin and Hernandez were also huge pieces of that 2006 team. It isn't accurate or fair to give the Zooker much credit for that championship.

The utter collapse of Meyer's program is an astounding failure. Some wondered early what his tenure would look like after 3, 4, 5 years. Implosion wasn't expected though.

Not bare but woefully incomplete in terms of player development. Almost to a man, those guys credit Meyer with turning their lives around on and off the field. Leak would be a notable exception. He could play, period. But that was true from day 1. You were at those early practices. Fluid, accurate, smart.

Because you can't have a thread about Meyer without comparing him to Spurrier. That's incomplete. That's like a stickup kid runnin' around without no heat.

Well then you can't have a thread about Meyer without also bringing in Woodruff, Graves, Dickey, Pell, Hall, Darnell and Zook

"Meyer laid the foundation for the Florida way"

While everyone is entitled to their opinions--even when they are wrong---the above statement made in the post falls into the category of:

Complete and utter lack of credibility.:laugh::laugh:

Right, but look at how corch Meyer won. He brought an offense to a run-first league, that nobody had ever seen, and completely took it by storm. He believed in recruiting faster players than the other team had. His offense was strategically designed to create mismatches, while getting playmakers out in space. Not even Saban and his people could handle it. Never before had the SEC seen a true passing like the one Meyer brought to Gainesville.

Picture NFL talent in the slot. At tight end. All across the line of scrimmage. It was everwhere. Meyer brought in the biggest, baddest dudes on the block. Do you realize that Harvin ran a 4.4? Who had speed like that under Spurrier? Then, he incorpotated Harvin into the running game, and he averaged 20 yards a clip. Look at the stats.

Show some respec for coach Meyer. His offense was by far the most innovative any had ever seen in the SEC. I mean, nobody had ever seen anything quite like it. At its full effect, Meyer's offense average 60 points per game. Who has done that before?

Meyer's way which Muschamp follows, is workaholic intensity 24/7 in everything. That can be fairly called "The Florida Way" and it is right to peg its origin to Meyer.

SOS was wildly successful too, but his way and his personal style were very different. He liked to work smart.

But "The Florida Way" isn't the same thing as Florida's winning tradition. That and the modern era for UF began with Spurrier.

It really began with Pell but got so roundly askew from probation and Hall's bad end years. Then 1990 was the launching pad.

I agree we should respect Meyer's accomplishments, as well as ding him on his failures.

On the accomplishment side - two national titles. All you really need to say.

But wrt his offense, let's not overdo it here... Meyer's offense never came anywhere near averaging 60 points a game. And while it was innovative, your point on the talent level is the real reason we scored... we could have been drawing up plays in the dirt and still scored a lot with those players.

In fact, I'd argue he wildly underperformed in 2009... he had one of the most talented and experienced all around teams to every play CFB, and averaged just under 36ppg. Honestly, that had to be hard to do - we were poorly coached on offense that year and the year after. In 2008, we were much better at 43.6ppg, but still nowhere near the 60ppg you claimed.

OTOH, SOS really did take the SEC by storm with scheme. He had good players but never had anywhere near the quantity NFL talent that Meyer assembled. Yet SOS thoroughly dominated the SEC on offense with those players, and scored over 50ppg in '95 and '96. A LOT more than Meyer's offense scored with TT, Harvin, Murph, Hernandez, Rainey, Demps, Coop, Nelson, and company behind an OL filled with big time NFL talent.

Just some perspective.

By 2009, the rift in the locker room was brewing. That may be a lot of the reason the 2009 team underperformed. The team was becoming divided due to Meyer's "circle of trust" and his other blatant favoritism. He had no idea how to fix that. Funny, but before UF, Meyer had never been HC at any school long enough for this kind of crap to rise to the surface.

Whew! Safe?!

I wonder how much if this is generational. I was a student 1980-83, then again 85-87. I feel strongly about those 83-84 teams and appreciate what was built despite the probation etc.

I started buying season tickets in 1990 and ever since. The joy of that first SOS game still jacks me up. I cannot and will not let anyone deny that SOS turned the SEC on its ear. He simply found a way to get someone wide open over and over. 3rd & 15 was almost a gimme, 20-yard fade, done. And UF had barely ever done anything before. That was an incredible 12 years.

I'm a Meyer fan. I was and am thrilled with how he changed the culture of the program. I don't think it was his offense. It was toughness, dedication, and focus. 2006 was a bare knuckles year and 2007-09 was amazing. Yes he lost it horribly at the end.

But are we seeing posters for whom Spurrier is a stat sheet, a bygone legend? A UF freshman today was born in 1994-95, in first grade in 2001. Spurrier at UF is not in his living memory. Spurrier is for him what Ray Graves is for me - UF history.

Someday we'll be trying to get Tebow across to a young person and they might not get it. Imagine that.

My only complaint with UM is the way we got jacked around by him his last year or so - resign, leave of absence, return (sort of), then resign again, all in the space of about a year, then take another coaching job a year after leaving despite all he said about health, family, etc. But I don't know how anyone can seriously claim he isn't an outstanding coach and didn't do an outstanding job here except for that last year.

My friend, you're missing my points completely. Let me address each of yours:

I never said Steve had to look over his shoulder. I don't know where that came from. I was stating that Meyer was simply a legend. Legendary figures give legendary speeches.

Goodness! I'm a Meyer supporter, but I don't think I've ever see a post with such epic fail in it. It would exhaust the bandwidth to rebut the errors. Has to be a troll effort or a joke. Nothing else.

There are plenty of disagreements about other things. What's so sacrosanct about UM that we're all supposed to reach some sort of common ground in our opinions?
