just wondering who gets together and thinks it is a good idea to do it?

I had a hard time understanding them but the comments mentioned they were chanting "how is your grandmother" when he attempted the free throws. This was after his grandmother just passing away. I personally feel this takes "classless" to a whole new level.

supposedly it was not the entire student section, but a handful of fans. Apparently, they have been outed by others in attendance. It seems most Duke fans are embarrassed by this... as they should be.
In fairness, I recall a small contingent of gator fans razzing Maryland's DJ Strawberry about his dad's wrong-doings.
Regardless of what one thinks about a fan's "right" to say certin things... there is a line between being a fan and a complete ass.

Beat me to it. That was a long time ago so my memory might be off. It was more than just a small group of Arizona State fans wasn't it?

different, and the latter is more offensive. but mocking a kid b/c his dad has a drug addiction... pretty pathetic.

Looked it up. I guess it was just a small group of Arizona State students.

i do not think that is his role, nor do i think it is an indictment on him for not involving himself. it is likely he is so engrossed in the game and his coaching job that he pays very, very little attention to what is being chanted by fans.

Apparently they were saying "Past your bed time" and a few probably said the thing about his grandma. If they really did say something about his grandma I don't care what type of rivalry there is, thats messed up.

It was a handful of students at ASu that heckled Steve Kerr. To ASu's credit, they did apologize afterwards, as did many fans after the game. But nothing was done during the game, despite the students being within obvious earshot of a security guard. Of course, Kerr ended up getting pissed and went out and torched ASU.

This also wasn't the last time ASu fans went too far heckling at a basketball game. The first game Lute Olson returned after his wife of 47 years Bobbi passed, again a handful of students starting saying some incredibly offensive things. Lute rarely responded to any of this, but somebody said something late in the game enough for Lute to point to the scoreboard as Arizona was winning by close to 20 points.

I actually do think its his role. Not as coach though, you're right about that. I've said before that big time coaches like Donovan too - K being the biggest of them all though - are more than just coaches. They're representatives of the program and everything that comes with it IMO (public relations included). Cal preaches to UK fans before every Louisville game about being "classy. I believe he also warned UK fans about not bringing up stories involving Duke (Jewelry) prior to playing them this year - not sure about this 100% though. He's always reminding fans "show everyone how Kentucky fans are the classiest in the nation." Now, I do'nt think thats actually true, but him saying it influences fans and can change their behavior. Some coaches don't need to even bring this subject up. Coach K does and this isnt' the first instance. He does't address it though. I'm actually a K fan, but think this is an indictment of him. Just not the end of the world.

I agree its not an indictment of how he handled it so far. Its not like he should stop the game and lecture the fans at that point. Think he should moving forward though. Coaches should care how their school's fan base comes off.

I also don't buy the "past your bedtime" crap either. Different people hear different things here, but I hear "how's your grandma." I think the media makes a lot more of this if its not Duke - but when haven't I thought that? Listen to the link, how anyone hears "past your bedtime" is completely beyond me.

This, via Shane Ryan, is what people are discussing, though. You can discern a few Duke fans chanting either "past your bedtime" or "how's your grandma" to Tyler Lewis. Thing is, Lewis' grandma recently died. The bedtime jab doesn't make a lot of sense; he doesn't look that young. I'm inclined to believe the worse of the two chants. Judge for yourself.

On Raleigh radio today, even some State fans are saying it was a small group...as are local reporters who attended the game.t

My guess is many were unaware.

They clearly chanted "Past your bedtime"...Making fun of his childish stature.

Yeah. . . I too think Coach K should make a comment following the game. My opinion was limited to during the game and "making it stop" at that time. I would be surprised if K even listens or hears the chants, let alone pays attention to the lyrics.
Now that this has been revealed. . . I could concur that he should address it.

I have no problem about fans reminding opposing players of their past indiscretions. Heck, it got UF a win against Vandy in 1989. ;^)

But this crosses a line that should not be crossed ever.

Norm Sloan stopped student crap back in the day. Got on the PA and told them to cut it out. They stopped.

I remember Bob Knight going to the mike during a game and said something like "No matter how bad the refs are you should never throw things on the floor, so please stop".

I'm not saying it is an impossible feat. I am saying he was likely focused on his actual job of caching so much that he probably did not even process the chant.

Yeah, but that was for throwing things on the floor. It was holding up the game.

Norm Sloan did at a UGA game get on the speaker after items were being thrown on the court. He told the crowd to show some damn class and quit throwing stuff on the court. It's the only time I ever saw him get on the speaker but it could have happened other times.

I've listened to the clip you posted several times with headphones, it really sounds like bedtime to me especially during the 2nd FT. Its harder to hear the crowd during the first FT with the announcers talking over them.

Sam Wyche had the all time great one:
"Would the next person who sees someone throw something onto the field, point them out?! You don't live in Cleveland, You live in Cincinnati!"

I'm sorry, but watching that clip it is clear on his second FT that it was considerably more than a handful of fans. There is a loud chant that had to include hundreds of fans. I do hate Duke, but I still like to think that most of the fans that joined in the chant had no idea that his grandma had just passed away. I could see where some just saw it as a taunt meant to make fun of his youthful appearance. I really hope so anyway.
