They had a trivia question/answer at our annual performance conference which stated that before UF football was called the Gators, they were called "Pee Wee's Boys". That was news to me...

No. But I am pretty sure it is about a foot long and thick as a beer can, or otherwise they would not be our mascot.

The answer stated that it was because of the Coach. I haven't had a chance to dig into it but I will.

The first UF football coach was James A. "Pee Wee" Forsythe. The football team was called Pee Wee's Boys because of Forsythe's nickname.


Edit: Norm Carlson's book, University of Florida Football Vault: The History of the Florida Gators has some really great information and photos, too.

Pee Wee was coach from 1906 through 1908.

It's a pretty good book. My wife got it for me a few years ago. Photo of Pee Wee in the book makes him look like he has a Muschamp-like stare.

Embarrasingly, my Gator history starts with Charlie Pell. I do have a book on G history but missed the Pee Wee reference.
