Seems like a great kid, should do well.
Will no doubt get homesick. Walmarts will only get you so far.

Heh, forget Walmart, that place has coaches having affairs with grad students on scooters. I can only imagine what the football player parties are like - My best guess is that it resembles what Uncle Luke was putting on pay-per-view back in the late 90's... Sounds like fun.

Yea, better Arky than Miami, but Im always a little surprised to see a S Fla kid go to some rural area like Arky. I think he would have been a Cane if not for impending sanctions. Maybe he's got some friends/relatives out there or something.

With those colors tho, he looks like an LSU natural.

How many announcements is a player allowed to make? Didn't he just announce to Ark? Now he'll have to turn around and announce that his mommy (or parole officer) won't let him leave the state.

I know how the mom feels. I let my kids pick the schools they applied to, and let them choose the school they attended (at least the ones we could afford). It wasn't until my daughter was 1000 miles away did I realize how hard that would be. If something happens and she needs us, we've got a very expensive plane ticket on our hands. Same thing if there's a family emergency at home. It's probably easier to get between Chicago and Boston than between Miami and Fayettville. Plus I'm sure his mom wants to see him play.

I kind of understand this as I'm close with all my family but then again, I struggle a bit to fully empathise with it.

I went to UF in 98 and I was 6000 miles from home! I was recently engaged at the time too. I survived by using a contraption called a "telephone" and hotty toddy gosh almighty (topical!) it was incredible. ;)

It all sounds well and good to criticize the mother, but many parents--especially in that neck of the woods--simply don't have the economic resources to make road trips or get the kids home for breaks or what have you. Odds are this didn't just come out of the blue, but has been a running contention around the Collins household every since he decommitted from Miami.

It's never the kid's problem. It's the parents. If anything, the world is bigger and scarier when you send your first kid off.

BTW, one of my daughter's first choices was St. Andrews. (Two of her classmates started there this year) My wife nipped that in the bud instantly. Beautiful school and very reasonable, but you can't get federally backed loans to go to school outside of the US.

Well, the one thing about fsu at the moment is somewhere in the next two seasons they likely don't have a serviceable OL in numbers or talent. I wish we had AC but there must be an underlying reason or two staff didn't pursue harder.

I watched his commitment a few nights ago and after watching him chat it up on "The New College Football Show" I found myself rooting for the kid. He seems like a cool kid. He was laughing/joking around with the hosts and came across as someone you want to root for.

I feel bad for him that on THE biggest day of his life up to this point and his mom embarassed the hell out of him. I thought I read somewhere that she is ultimately going to sign his LOI and allow him to attend Arky. Basically, his mother embarassed him for nothing.

As a parent, I completely understand "wanting" your child to stay close to home. But at some point you have to realize that the point of raising your children is for them to eventually become independent adults. You have to trust that you have done a good job raising them and then let them make their own decisions and put aside your selfish desires to keep them close.

I can see both sides. I agree that if a kid has a free ride everywhere, it shouldn't bother a parent where he goes. It's not like he's going to walk on and pay full price at Arky.
But what if Kiffin came in and promised him all the coke he could snort at USC? Wouldn't you want a parent to put the kibosh on that?

The rules are in place to help ensure Parent's, for the most part, have the opportunity to be included in the process and look out for their child's best interest. It's a good thing. Unfortunately the same is not true of military service where their child could be put into harms way. But that's life.

This situation is not black and white. Alex high school coach Gatewood is really good friends with the Arky staff and he has been pushing the kid to them. He was pushing Alex to Wisconsin when the staff was there. Alex mother doesnt trust Gatewood or Arkansas. One of the big problems I have with official visits is that the school cant pay for the parents transportation.

I think people may be a little quick to judge the mother here. The one person who will almost always try to do what they believe is right for the kid is the Mom.

His coaches and maybe his Dad and everyone else around him probably have their own reasons to influence his decision.

Other than maybe selfishness over wanting to keep him close to home, if she is trying to keep him away from Arkansas this badly, she probably has a pretty good reason. If she doesn't trust Gatewood or his relationship to the Arkansas staff, she probably has a VERY good reason.

It's easy to say just let Alex do what he wants, but there's a very good chance he is being taken advantage of by at least one of the people who are trying to push him there. Mom's are pretty good judges of character.

my impression from this is not that she hired a lawyer to try to prevent her son from going to arky, but to protect herself from perceived slander in the press. after listening to the espn crew openly laugh and mock her all day yesterday, i can kind of see where she may be coming from.
