Toomer's Oaks to be removed

Unfortunately Auburn is conceding the inevitable and will be removing Toomer's Oaks sometime this year. The will have one last rolling at Auburn's spring game. Sad.

i had made the recommendation previously that UF could - and other SEC schools could donate a large oak to toomer's. that would be a great gesture. of course, the logistics would have to be worked out.

While in theory it makes sense and sounds like a great gesture, the rest of the conference shouldn't be subsidizing the often times stupidity that is the Bama Auburn rivalry. If anyone should be paying for it it's Bama, whether they claim Updyke or not. Bama disaster relief after the tornado yes, Auburn relief because that state has no concept on how to keep football in perspective, no.

Easily one of the worst stories in college football in quite some time.

I can excuse a juvenile prank--but not something that does permanent damage like this. Truly hope that trash Updyke gets thrown in a rubber room for a long, long time with nothing but Auburn highlight videos to watch. That would be poetic justice.

I really feel bad for the Auburn folks. The Toomer's trees were iconic symbols of the university. I agree that they should replace the trees with mature oaks of similar size, but the university has other plans.

i liked that corner of the campus for the trees. but it was a bit of a 'dead' corner in my opinion. making a more friendly/welcoming entry at that corner makes sense. the wall/sign seemed to cut off pedestrian flow and seems to be a definite issue in views into the campus at that corner. i'd advocate for the plaza and a new entry sign (arch?). i'd keep the historic building though as the first view of the campus, although i can see the business school wanting to modernize the facilities to keep up w/ the competition.

there is a certain life expectancy for trees, those mature pines etc are on their upper limits. would be nice to have replacements in the fold though. that sort of old florida look/landscape is becoming quite rare now. like a museum piece.

Me too. I still think it's only a matter of time. Although, in my experience, Bama fans are a lot more insane than Auburn fans. If an Auburn fan had done something to Bama of this magnitude, I would have no doubt that some Bama fan would have done something twice as bad by now.

Yea... just imagine if a Awbrin fan had rushed into the Paul "Bear" Bryant Museum with a submachine gun and riddled the desk and office that belonged to Bryant?

(Yea... that's right folks... they got Bryant's office... his desk...chair and his various belongings all there inside the museum.)

Regarding the trees:

Auburn used to roll only the power lines nearby - but at some point the lines were buried so around the 90's they started rolling the Oaks.

In 2007 the university of auburn declared the trees were dying. The rolling of the trees and pressure washing them is one of the causes. It was also popular to roll the trees and then light the toilet paper on fire. This is what led to the pressure washing.

They also suffered from paving over their root system and also factor in that particular species is not actually near enough to the coastline to be where they do well.

If the auburn fan base really cared for those trees they would not have put them through decades of abuse.

Harvey Updike didn't help matters but the trees were already in their way out.

That is why Auburn hasn't gone all out in a vendetta. They know Updike only advance the inevitable.
