54 years ago today. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about what Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens might have gone on to do had they lived. The Bopper probably wouldn't have had such a long career as a performer, but he would have had his own influence as a celebrity DJ.

I was listening to Buddy Holly this week. Love his music. He was an incredible influence on music to come even with his way too short time.
Four years ago at work I commemorated 50 years. No one understood.
JP Richardson, the Big Bopper, asked Waylon Jennings to ride the bus and let him have the seat in the airplane, because he was sick and needed to get to the destination quickly, and Jennings agreed. I read once the Jennings felt guilty about that for years.

Sad day, I was a pre-teen at the time of the crash and knew it was bad but did not have a full appreciation of the talent that died that day until a few years later.........

Holly jokingly told Jennings, "I hope the bus breaks down," and Jennings jokingly said, "I hope your plane crashes."

They were three of the greats in Rock and roll music. Too many of our talented musicians have died too soon.

There was nothing else quite like the Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace." (Another truly unique sound of the time was Mickey and Sylvia's "Love Is Strange.")

True Love Ways is one of the greatest love songs ever written, imo.

Although it contains some factual errors, as all biopics do, I really liked the movie The Buddy Holly Story.

Don McClain paid tribute to Holly better than anyone ever did and could. Holly was a big influence on him.

Trivia question: What was the name of Buddy Holly's group? I know the answer. Does anyone else?

imo buddy holly would have eventually been bigger than elvis, who could just sing. holly could sing, play guitar, write great songs, arrange, was one of the first to use strings in his songs, a true loss, and yes, don mcleans american pie is a truelly under appreciated songs of all time, take time to try and figure out all the rock and roll references in the song, a great, great song.

I was listening to the radio tonight and a Led Zeppelin song came on that sounded a lot like "Ooh My Head," a Ritchie Valens song. Sure enough, after the song played the DJ said they had to credit Ritchie's mother for the song.
