View Full Version : Number of shots taken by Ole Miss

In a thread the other day I talked about the amount of shots Ole Miss was able to take against Kentucky. They shot 85 times in that game and I said no way they would get off anywhere close to that many shots against the Gators. Tonight they were able to put up 55 attempts and make 21 of those. That amounted to 38.2% overall with their 3 point percentage actually being higher at 41.2 %. You can credit that to the shooting of Henderson who made 7-11 from behind the arc.
Compare that to the Gators who shot 38-62 from the field which came in at 51.6% and 11-29 from 3 point range or 37.9%. Also Ole Miss got 15 points at the charity stripe with 21 attempts vs only 3 for 3 from Florida. My take on this is the Black Bear Rebels (or whatever they heck they are) were lucky it wasn't a whole lot worse than it was. Florida's balanced attack and its relentless defense once again showed why they are one of the best teams in the nation.

Good thread, Hall. Looking at this comparison and watching UK play common competition, it appears we will lay a solid smack down on them. Hard to imagine that happening, but UF is far and away the best SEC team right now. Would love to crush the Kitties twice this year. Would also love a sweep of the Vollies, who play undisciplined.

No, the game was not anywhere close to the final score. The outcome was never in doubt after our 24-5 run midway through the first half. At one point, I think we had 16 assists on 21 made baskets. The shooting foul disparity basically kept the score from looking as embarrassing to them as it would have otherwise--that and the garbage three at the end with our starters out of the game.

the stripes did what they could to keep the Rebels in the game-

If anyone gets a chance to look at the game again it would be interesting to know how many of Henderson's points came when someone other than Scottie was guarding him. That last shot he made was probably a frustration one since SW had slapped the ball out of his hands just prior to that.

Ordinarily I don't buy that argument, but in this case it seemed pretty justified. Donovan was absolutely incensed at times, especially after the first half and early in the second.

By the way, something I meant to add was we had 5 blocked shots to their 3 which ain't too shabby either.

I think Henderson made three 3s on Scottie, two on Boynton, one on a switch with Rosario and then the garbage one at the end.
Ole Miss really packed in their zone tight in the second half. There wasn't a lot of space for entry passes to Young. We as team, I think we probably should have hit about three more 3s considering some of the open looks that didn't go down. I do think that would have opened it up a little more for Patrick in the second half.
We are the far superior team, but Ole Miss is not bad and play tough in that zone.

I agree that it seemed the score could have been much worse.
The great defense continued. Henderson was hot making some circus shots and the Ole Miss big man (the lefty) was pretty good, so they did score more than we had been giving up.
I keep hoping the excellent offense doesn't fade, but we looked very good again (and still very sloppy at times). But, I felt we could have easily scored 90+ with all the wide open threes we had. All the offensive rebounds helped (although they hurt us also with some offensive boards of their own).

I bet they are a bit unhappy as had the kind of shooting game against UK they probably win.

That's hard to get used to. Doesn't seem quite right.

I think UF passed up some open 3's early at times because they played with a big lead most of the game. Those guys know that running down there and jacking it up will get them more bench time. No question Florida could have scored more points, but the objective was to win the game playing the way they are coached.

Florida got a little three-happy and went a little cold in stretches of this game but they were good looks that didn't drop. Ole Miss made at least 3-4 threes that were flukish. Not our most efficient win but very good win.

No doubt, InstiGator. Hope you don't mind me chiming in to you guys' thread. The UK loss hurt, but I also think some of that was a by product of three games in 6 days. Very physical games at that. The legs were pretty shot. I don't think anyone in the Rebel fan base expects us to hit some torrid pace because we do run an offense that likes to get a lot of possessions and shots if possible. A lot of reliance on athleticism too.
Hopefully we can get through this week and get our feet back under us and continue the rest of the way through the season. We certainly won't see a complete team like the one that hits the floor in the O'Dome again. It's like a hydra with too many heads to cut off if you want to win. The only hope is to trade baskets because if you ever let the Gators get a run of more than 4-6 points off on you, then you have to work too hard to come back to expect to complete a rally.
I expected to be 7-1 after tonight. I do have to admit that I'm glad that 6-2 is disappointing to me.
Good luck the rest of the way!

We don't mind at all. Hope your guys heal up and you can get at least one of them back this year.

Also I really liked to see the offensive rebounds against a normally good rebounding Ole Miss front court, but we did give up a number of offensive rebounds ourselves, or at least a handful where we couldn't get a hold of it and deflected it out of bounds giving Ole Miss another possession.

The 3 Henderson made against Rosario was riDONKulous (if that term is still allowed )!!!
Henderson made one late when Yeguete switched out on him (and the screener was mugging Wilbekin). Yeguete got a hand in his face, but the shot went in after bouncing up high off the rim - a little lucky on that one.

If I had to bet, he was incensed at our guys as much as the refs. No one other than Henderson could score and we kept giving them free points, many on bad shots.
We didn't play particularly smart tonight, Young was 6-8 from the field, they had no inside depth if we could get them in foul trouble and we put up 30 threes. We would get them down and then relax letting them back within striking distance, fighting ourselves on rebounds several times, fouls on bad shots, PY trying to play point guard bringing the ball up and getting stripped - then trying to hammer down a one handed dunk and letting the ball go out, few if any FT line touches to kick the ball back out against the zone in the second half etc. This all adds up to only shooting 3 FTs and a second half draw.
Might seem like I am being harsh but we had them outclassed, we were never going to lose at home. And when you start treating games that way, when the tournament rolls around and you play much better teams, that stuff means a ticket home. Gotta play smarter for a whole game.
That said, happy with another win, happy we are 8-0, and hopefully it was a one time thing and not a developing pattern. Don't want to see our team IQ start to slip because they can get away with it.

Funny, but Donovan had an entirely different view. He said the team played very well and played smart, especially on the defensive side of the ball, singling out Wilbekin, Young, and Murphy. He said the zone the last ten minutes kept us from feeding the post and even told the team during a timeout that they were taking good shots and they needed to keep taking them. He also thought the calls were one-sided in the first half in terms of shooting fouls. And, for the record, it was a +1 second half despite a garbage three by Henderson with 11 seconds left against our twos.

Not so much harsh as unrealistic. It is human nature to ease up and lose some focus when you have a big lead at times. Did the kids make some bad decisions and play sloppy? At times, yes. But they missed a ton of shots they ordinarily make despite moving the ball perfectly for the entire game and being unselfish. Their mistakes were not out of laziness or a lack of effort, but often out of trying to do too much or stepping on one another's shoes. It happens. But without Henderson making some circus threes, us missing a ton of open perimeter looks against the zone that we ordinarily knock down, and several questionable shooting fouls called against us, this game is another 30-point blowout.

The overwhelming number of times I can usually predict what Billy will say, so either he will look at the film and see some other things, or I was in a particularly crabby mood when making my assessment. I know where most would put their money lol.
