Saw that, wasn't going to make it either way but that certainly wasn't going to get me to change my mind. I am sure people felt the same about the Coachella headliners which are pretty weak but I actually like a lot of the lineup so I am happy with that. I am looking at possibly making it to Sasquatch over MDW this year, no lineup yet but I really want to see a show at the Gorge.

Valdosta, have you ever made it up to the annual Graham Parson festival in Waycross.
If you have to ask me who is Graham Parson then I have to say two things:
1, You have not been to the festival.
2, That I am an old fart.

Haha, correct on the first one, and old timers have great music. I had to resort to google and youtube to find out who Gram Parsons was. I can dig it, I'll listen to just about anything but rap. Is the festival a good time?

I don't know anything about the festival other than that it is a tribute to one of the best guitar player of his day. I was hopping that you or someone had some info on it.
I did googled some of the acts from last year. Some of the acts are from the 70's and the members personally played with or knew Parsons. I believe the focus of the festival is country rock. A genre that Parsons was a pioneer in.
I grew up in Jacksonville. When I started college I dated a girl who had family in Waycross. Back then Waycross was a place that you left not go back to. It have to be a damn good festival to make me spend a weekend there.

I do Pitchfork every year because I can get there in 15 minutes. My financial situation is a bit better than in years past so I might do another big festival far from Chicago this year. Coachella is a possibility. Also thinking about Lolla in Tel Aviv.

Don't know all the details on that, yet, but doesn't look like Tel Aviv is happening anytime soon. I'll let you all know via PM if I find anything out.
A couple of acts confirmed for Chicago Lolla. You can get a general idea by looking at the lineups for Chile and Brazil but there is one big name in discussions for Chicago. An older, classic act who was very cutting edge in the early to mid-seventies and then hit big, again, in the early-eighties. Health may be an issue for this individual so don't know for sure.
One band confirmed has someone spotting on drums for this gig who also played drums for another band in the early nineties and now fronts his own band.

Yeah, my intent was to be in Tel Aviv as well. Wish I could hit either Brazil or Chile this year but I have way too much work going on so it will only be Chicago this time around.

Not a chance that his initials are D.G. Hard to guess who he might be spotting for since he's spotted for more bands than I can count. IMHO, he's the best frontman in the business.
I would probably do Lolla Chicago if I didn't go to another out of town festival. Bummed about Tel Aviv, but I'll probably be on better financial footing a year later. Maybe I can look at Pitchfork Paris.
Regarding Pitchfork Chicago, the headliners don't really matter. You take it on faith that you will discover great new bands you've never heard of. It's a cheap, mellow festival that's easy to get to, easy to get away from and out to the after-parties. The venue is much more compact and the crowd is there for the music and not just because there's a festival going on.
Wish Coachella didn't sell out so quickly every year. I guess I have to plan months ahead of time to go there. There's a remote chance that this new company I'm working for will require me to move to the west coast. If that's the case, I'll just buy tickets as soon as they go on sale.

That would be cool considering Grant Hart doesn't look so great these days.
BTW, checked out Sound City yesterday and it is a pretty cool documentary. A little disjointed at the end and it definitely comes off as a bit of a vanity piece on Dave Grohl but there is some pretty cool stuff there, too.

Sounds a little like Neil Young. He just came through town. I see that Lou Reed is playing Coachella. Hope it's not him because he bombed at Lolla four years ago. It was actually a good set, but I was probably the only person in the crowd who even knew who he was. Neil is at another high water mark artistically. Hope his health is okay. Been a constant fan since about 68.

The "Thin White Duke" has just released a new album. That would be enough to get me to Lolla. Funny that you mentioned he might have the same reaction from Lolla youngsters. That will be full-on.
International Speedway Corp has been trying to land festivals at a variety of tracks they own and it makes sense. Vegas has been a success and you have wide open spaces with top notch facilities that are virtually bullet-proof. Infrastructure is already there, big time. Proximity to metropolitan areas is the biggest drawback.
LeafUF
02-16-2013, 02:25 PM
You are absolutely right about proximity being a major issue. Adding camping in Chicago could really help with that. I have been to EDC Vegas the past two years and the traffic is a disaster no matter what you do. And when something goes wrong like 70 MPH winds like last year that cause them to shut down early you are stuck in the middle of nowhere with no good way back to town.
On the other hand though the space is fantastic and can handle crowds very well. I will be interested to see how they do it at Chicagoland, if its an all night thing like it is here in Vegas then Chicago could be the second largest of their festivals.

Speedways simply don't exist well within city limits for the obvious reasons but Chicago and Las Vegas both have top notch hotels that cater to the particular tastes of the talent performing there. A place like Daytona does not though Daytona could handle everything else with room to spare. Lack of high-end hotels prevents a facility like Daytona from hosting a similar event.

Chicagoland Motor Speedway is in Joliet, which has some casinos nearby, so there should be some decent hotel accommodations in addition to what they have to handle the racing fans. In general, Joliet is not a very nice area. And it's almost an hour drive from downtown. On a regular Friday afternoon, I-55 is a parking lot from about 3:00 on. I can only imagine what it's like with a music festival going on.
Speedways are good in terms of holding a lot of people, vending, restrooms etc, but I don't like the idea of enclose areas without shade. Love festivals with shaded areas. Can't imagine camping at a speedway, unless I had an actual camping vehicle. I'm a tent/under the stars kind of camper. Camping at a speedway isn't my idea of getting back to nature. Will have to check out the lineup to see if this is my kind of thing. If the bands are good and the price is right, I'll probably be there, just not overnight.

Back to Pitchfork, which festivals offer the most shade? The Balance Stage at p4k is the chillest daytime stage I've ever experienced. Lolla has some nice shady areas, but far from the music. You can actually lay down in a hammock in the shade, but you can't really hear any bands while you're doing that.
I wouldn't mind getting out to some of the other festivals, but I like getting out of the sun for a while. Forget Bonnaroo. I went to school briefly near there, and I had some really bad hillbilly encounters. I don't even pull off the freeway on that stretch of I-24.

Neither would I but Soundgarden Louder Than Love tour at the Cuban Club in Tampa back in 1990 was one of the most violent, insane and awesome concert experiences I have ever had. LSD was on the menu that night.
