View Full Version : Negotiating with the Alabama hostage taker

Tonight the guy filling in for Hannity on Fox News has two former hostage negotiators, talking to the man holding a five-year-old hostage in Alabama on the assumption that he's watching TV. I wonder how the on-scene negotiators talking with this nut feel about two guys talking to him on TV. The nut can't talk back to the guys on TV, and what if they rub him the wrong way and set him off?
This strikes me as totally irresponsible behavior at Fox News. I'm surprised that two former hostage negotiators are taking part in it. But hey, maybe I'm wrong and Fox News in its wisdom is going to win the boy's release.

I would think that Fox cleared it with the authorities prior to having them on. I'm not experienced in any way regarding hostage negotiations so I...nor probably anyone on this board...can speak with real experience or authority on the issue. But common sense would definitely assume it was cleared beforehand.
You would surely hope so anyway. We are talking about a young autistic boy at stake here.

I guess the on-scene negotiators told him to be sure and tune in.

I worked with Jimmy Lee Dykes - who is from around the Dothan, Alabama area - for a year on a J.A. Jones construction project at the St. Regis paper plant in Pensacola, Florida, in 1974-75. We were lay-out field engineers, and he was the party chief. The Engineer of the project was a local guy who had commuted from Pensacola to Dothan everyday, to work on the nuclear plant there. When the St. Regis air emissions control and plant expansion job opened, the Engineer took the job (to avoid the commute to Dothan) and offered Jimmy the party chief position if he would move down to P'cola.
Jimmy was still into smoking a lot of pot in those days and drove a blue 1974 Dodge with a hemi. We never had any problems; in fact, he was a laid-back kind of guy.
I quit the job in '76 due to health reasons and to return to undergrad studies. Never saw him again.
It is a small world. I pray he comes to whatever senses he has left.

Strange coincidence LD. I too hope he comes to his sense but it sounds like he has went off the deep end.

Yeah, Hall, definitely one of those strange things in life, and it does sound like he finally lost it.
I have no clue what his beef with life was or is. He was not pissed about anything back in the day. Like I said, he was real mellow at the time.

Are our friends on the left sure they really want to ride this train? Instances of political violence? Having just had some OWS mooks plot to blow up a bridge just these several months back?

couldn't tell you. this is all the story said:
Michael Creel said Dykes kept to himself and listened a lot to conservative talk radio.
"He was very into what's going on with the nation and the politics and all the laws being made. The things he didn't agree with, he would ventilate," he said.
James Arrington, police chief of the neighboring town of Pinckard, put it differently.
"He's against the government, starting with Obama on down," he said.
why do you assume it was Limbaugh?

Within the past 24 hours, negotiations deteriorated and Mr. Dykes was observed holding a gun,” Mr. Richardson said. “At this point, F.B.I. agents, fearing the child was in imminent danger, entered the bunker and rescued the child.”
It was not clear how Mr. Dykes was killed, nor was it immediately clear how the F.B.I. monitored Mr. Dykes’s activities in the bunker. The authorities declined to answer questions about the details of the rescue, although earlier in the weeklong siege they said they had talked to him through a length of PVC pipe.

Oh shoot, I forgot to add the smilie or whatever you use to indicate humor.
I don't really think one FBI agent would go in by himself in that situation. But it's been a long time since I was in the rescue business.

This guy was living proof (he's now dead proof) that listening to too much conservative talk radio can lead to a bunker mentality.

I've listened to liberal radio shows and I want to go postal on them sometimes so it all depends on your perspective:-) For me, listening to conservative radio is therapy. Makes it feel good when others feel the same way.
BTW, the reason you don't see too many liberal hostage takers is because they would screw it up. The moment they drove by a Starbucks they would go through the drive thru and forget what it was they were doing:-)

You forgot the part about shooting a bus driver first. Then you kidnap children. Please, get it right.

Part one of a multifaceted plan to unravel the 1st amendment. No doubt, Hitler or Stalin did the exact thing.

A 5-year-old boy freed Monday after being held captive in an underground bunker for six days is laughing and smiling and playing with his favorite toy dinosaur after being reunited with his family, authorities said.
The boy's kidnapper is dead, but officials offered no details on the raid that freed the boy -- identified only by his first name, Ethan -- and left his abductor fatally shot.
