View Full Version : Erik Murphy is shooting 6.1% better from 3 than anyone in the SEC

He is shooting 48.7% from bonus land.

Next closest is Andre Stringer from LSU who shoots 42.6%.

I know we appreciate his ability to knock down 3's but I think this has gone a bit unnoticed. That is a HUGE difference between #1 and #2. For perspective, #3 is Wiltjer at 40.7%.

Murphy is making himself some money this year.

In watching Erik's 3 point range shots, I believe he is being more selective with his shots, holding off when he sees a less probability shot.

I think that can be said for everyone on the team. As others have mentioned, they all seem to be playing within themselves this year.

Agreed.

I have been SO pleased with everyone's shot selection. The worst thing we do is sometimes they get really picky and we have to launch a bad shot at the last second but that's what happens when you are searching for a great shot sometimes.

Can't wait for tomorrow!

He is also doing a great job with the corner threes. He didn't shoot many of those in then past, but it is really opening up that pick and pop on the wing.

Right and with Boynton, Wilbekin, Frazier and Rosario to share the load from 3, if you are a big who misses his first couple from the arc you can just slide inside and contribute down low.

Murphy, Rosario, boyton should all be 1st-2nd round picks.. I can't see how they wouldn't be, Rosario has raised his game significantly, and Murphy's shot is just unreal from downtown

Murphy certainly has a Matt Bonner like game. I expect him to go in the 2nd round. He is a very good Bonner comp and Murphy shoots better from the further back college arc. And of course Bonner was drafted and is still playing in the Association.

Boynton/Rosario are a bit more problematic. If Boynton had Rosario's jump shot in terms of how it looks not percentage and Rosario's ability to drive to the rim, I think Boynton would be picked. If Rosario had Boynton's care with the ball security and a longer history of good play in a good system, I think he would be picked.

Of the two, I suspect Rosario is more likely to have a good pre-draft performance and be picked. It would great to see all 3 of these guys picked and Young too in the first round if he leaves after this year.

Murphy will definitely get drafted once the predraft camps start and he lights it up and shows his whole game to the scouts.

In the 7 SEC games (7) Murph is shooting a light running...... 52.8%. (19/36)

That's only taking five 3-pt shots per game. I've thought, at times the guys make one pass too many giving the ball up when they had a good shot.

1. Erik Murphy-UF SR 7 19 36 .528
2. Julius Mays-UK SR 7 14 32 .438
3. Ken. Caldwell-Pope-UG SO 7 18 43 .419
4. Jabari Brown-MO SO 7 24 58 .414
5. Mike Rosario-UF SR 6 12 31 .387
6. Kenny Boynton-UF SR 7 17 46 .370
7. Elston Turner-AM SR 7 15 46 .326
8. Anthony Hickey-LS SO 7 17 53 .321
9. Marshall Henderson-UM JR 7 24 80 .300

Great to see Boynton on that SEC only list after his rough stretch before SEC play.

Henderson 24/80 at 30%...what's so special about this guy again?

Someone said on another thread that Frazier is shooting 50% in SEC play, 10 of 20, which I assume is too few shots to qualify for the list.

gators are getting some nice open looks w/ their offense, they are playing unselfish and making the extra pass, and finding the open man. EM hitting from different spots really helps too as the defense can't really 'sit' in an area to cover.

That's what I found so notable about the MSU game. Admittedly, the Bulldogs suck, but still, I was stunned at how wide open our threes were. We took, what, 30 three-pointers in that game, and I remember one that wasn't a solid, in-the-flow-of-the-offense, Donovan-approved three. If you're going to leave guys like Murphy, Boynton, Rosario, Frazier and even Wilbekin wide open, you're going to lose.

I may be incorrect, but looking at the entire season, I have the following 3-point shooting Gators:

100% - Kurtz - 1/1
48.7% - Murphy - 38/78
43.9% - Frazier - 25/57
41.5% - Wilbekin - 22/53
40.0% - Prather - 2/5
36.3% - Boynton - 45/124
35.4% - Rosario - 28/79
25.0% - Yeguete - 1/4; Ogbueze - 1/4
00.0% - Graham - 0/6; Walker - 0/5

overall, I have the Gators hitting 39.2% on 163/416

I mean, when your 6 primary 3-point shooters are all hitting 35% or more, with Murphy, as you noted, setting a Wicked pace for the pack, you are doing something right.

FT are 69.7% on 223/320

2-point shots - 56.5% on 345/611

Any time you hit 50% or better on 2-point goals, or 33% or better on 3-point goals, you are doing pretty well. This team's 39% is insane from 3.

In defense of Henderson, he's not shooting the same kind of 3's as some other guys on the list are. He's counted on far more for his scoring and his ability to create for himself - and takes a lot more contested 3's. The same can be said of Kenny Boynton - especially in years past.

Doron Lamb (not making this about UK, just the best example I've got) shot better than 48% from 3 each of his two seasons. This was significantly better than Brandon Knight. I think Knight is still the better shooter.

I'm not trying to diminish what Murphy is doing. Most guys couldn't hit that percentage if unguarded. Just taking up for guys who have different responsibilities.

That's ridiculous. He is definitely become an NBA player that will be drafted maybe even late 1sr rd. He has improved every year and has become a matchup nightmare.

Chris Lofton always impressed me that he would shoot a relatively high percentage of shots while being the focal point of the offense.

I think Henderson should be up for a Nobel Peace Prize...bringing UK and UF hoops fans together...that's nothing short of solving the conflict between the Arabs and the Jews!1
