The Greatest Rolex Story You'll Ever Hear!

Dr. Jim Norman, driver in the Napleton Racing #16 Porsche Cayman team that just won class GX in the 2013 Rolex 24, has the funniest Rolex story you'll ever hear! In his own words --

http://www.onehotlap.com/2013/01/the-greatest-rolex-story-youll-ever-hear.html

Today I take my new Rolex to the jeweler right down the street from my house in Tampa to get a link taken out so it fits me better (for those of you who don't know, the winning drivers of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona are presented with a new Rolex timepiece in Victory Lane).
The jeweler re-sizes it for me and charges me $8. I say "Wow, 8 bucks, that's not very much". The manager lady says, "well, if it were a REAL Rolex we would charge you more!". I chuckle and say "it IS a real Rolex". She says, "Nope it is not...We know Rolex watches and this is definitely a fake." My retort, "well, I guess you don't know these as well as you think!". Hearing this, the Jeweler comes out from behind his little glass window from where he is working on a frail, blue-haired lady's broach while wearing some very dorky-looking magnifying glasses and says, "I'll bet you bought that watch in New York". He puts both hands in his back pockets and sticks out his skinny "bird" chest in an attempt to be strong and assertive. "Nope" I say, "I haven't been to NYC in some time". He quickly replies, "I'll bet you $1000 you didn't buy that from a real Rolex dealer". I say, I won't take that bet, because you are right, I didn't buy this from a Rolex dealer". "AH HA!" he exclaims, "it IS a fake!! Where did you get it??" "I got it in Daytona this past Sunday". "HA! I am right!" he shouts, almost loud enough to break some of the crystal elephants assembled as a group on one of the overhead glass shelves. "I know all the Rolex dealers in Daytona, and none of them is open on Sundays!" He is quite pleased with himself and turns to strut back to his window-enclosed, nick-knack cluttered cubby. "Maybe I didn't get it from a dealer" I state smugly. He turns and says, "well then tell me, who DID you get this FAKE Rolex from?"
Well, I stated calmly and coolly, I was presented this beautiful timepiece from the President and CEO of Rolex Watch Allen Brill while standing on the podium at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona". "OH, Sure!" he says, "and I'm Santa Claus!!".

And back into his cubby he went, oblivious to the REAL world around him. He doesn't get it... The world is passing him by and he isn't even aware that it is happening. You gotta love life and embrace life... even if it means you have to wear a fake Rolex.

Great story. Ignorant dealer will probably never even realize his stupidity and continue to think he is right--regardless of the facts.

Bet my cell phone keeps better time than his Rolex be it fake or real. I can't believe people still wear watches when everything you own has a clock in it.

Prestige for the most part--especially when it comes to names like Rolex and Piaget.

I would bet even a Timex or other price point watch keeps just as good time as a Rolex or others.

Aside from being way too expensive, I wouldn't buy a Rolex for the same reason I don't buy Oakley sunglasses. Too many fakes. I enjoyed that story, though.

I bought my Rolex Submariner in 1986. Primarily I was doing a lot of diving at the time and every other watch broke in 90 days or was not accurate enough.I had a friend we owned a big jewelry store and it was between the TAG or Rolex. All these years later its still a great watch and worth more than the $1200 I gave for it new........haters gonna hate.

When you're trying to look good a nice watch is nearly mandatory though.

If you're going to an interview, you better have a watch on and not be pulling out your cellphone.

As for the OP, who's to say the CEO didn't give him a fake rolex?

It was apparently a 'regular' jeweler, not an authorized Rolex dealer. Still don't know the exact store, but still hilarious that the guy was a snob and didn't know a Rolex when he took a link out of one while talking smack to the customer. Another friend of his said a REAL Rolex dealer would not have charged him at all to remove a link.

I own a real Rolex President and I wear it daily. I would never wear a fake. It's about 15 years old. My watch at Allen Furman & Co at today's price new sells for $24,455. Here's a pic...

Everything you do and/or purchase in life is directly related to your personal income. If you can afford it why not? I've driven way more expensive cars from Porche's, Corvette, Volvo's, Lexus. My Rolex watch never did cost more than any of the cars I drove.

Personal choice so why would you have a problem with it? Heck, I wish I could afford a watch that cost more than my car but I wouldn't actually buy that watch. I, personally, couldn't justify a watch that expensive no matter what but wouldn't begrudge a person who did. That said, thoroughly proud I can afford the car I drive and thoroughly proud I can afford the watches I wear. I worked hard, I earned it so why not?

I guess finding out that your prized Rolex being a fake is like finding out the the girl of your dreams that you married was once a man.

If you don't want an expensive Rolex or other watch, then don't but it. It is pretty tacky and rude to criticize and denigrate those who choose to purchase an expensive watch.
That, sir, is considered bad manners...

I have spent plenty of money and will keep doing it as long as there are toys and games that I enjoy. As far as watches go they just are not my thing so there is no chance I will ever own one that cost 24K no matter how much money I have. I would enjoy losing that on the Black Jack table more than I would wearing a Rolex.

I can't believe some people are so smug and know it all.

You cannot bring a cell phone into the Orlando Federal Courthouse, thus the need for a watch. You are not allowed to bring a cell phone into the Glynn Courthouse in GA. I could name about 50 other courthouses, but you get the picture.

I don't bring my cellphone into a church service, as requested by the pastor. Many of my friends don't either.

I don't bring my cellphone with me to business dinners anymore, as looking at it is rude, impolite, and distracting.

I don't bring a cellphone when scuba diving or snorkeling.
Or swimming or surfing, or sailing.
Or kayaking.

A surgeon friend of mine won't bring a cell in the OR

So there are some examples for you.

And here is one of my watches

Well you got me on swimming & diving, probably church too. I've never seen a court house without a clock in every room and I bet even your sailboat has a radio or gps, there are 4 different electronic devices at the helm of my boat that have a time function on them. Just sayin I personally have no use for a watch and haven't worn one in 20 years.

My take in people who buy Super Expensive watches:
1, it is mine of my business on how some one spends their money unless the are breaking the law. At this time we do not have any regulation on the owning and carrying of super expensive watches.

2, As for an opinion I am OK with it as long as the buyer of the watch had their priorities in order. Such as taking care of his family and donating to charities.

Some people do not realize that the rich and poor have different perspectives on the cost of items For instance a person making $30K a year thinks that a $500 watch is way out of line of their resources and priorities. On the other hand a multi millionaire has very little concern about the cost of a $1K watch or maybe even a $10K watch.

The $30K a year person will spend $50 dollars on a decent watch without hurting their family and not being criticize by the general public.

Now why isn't the multi millionaire given the same consideration when buying a $10K or a $25K watch? (provided that his family is being taken care of and he is putting back into the community)

I wear a Rolex and love it. What people fail to realize is while you may be able to keep the same time with a cellphone/Timex, my Rolex is still worth the same or more than the day I bought it. There are multiple reasons to buy an expensive watch including looks but the best reason is you are buying a piece of jewelry that will retain its value.

I just picked up a Luminox at Xmas on Amazon for $168. So far so good. Its pretty light and good for work.
I also have been buying some of the vintage Seiko dive watches. Pretty cool and cheap.

I was actually thinking about the lumi's tonight, the seem like they glow something fierce, has it become any kind of bother with it being too bright at night?

I had one for years and they are solid watches and a great value, too. I always appreciated the glow and wonder why other watch makers don't employ that in their sport/dive watches. I plan on buying another Luminox very soon.

Does Rolex still make the crystal from an oyster shell? I think they used too.

I had a professor who became a friend who wore a Rolex his mother gave him for earning his PhD. It's that kind of gift. Like diamonds for a woman.

Even though I don't wear watches I can appreciate a beautiful one. I just don't like something hanging on my arm. Before cell phones I carried pocket watches or wrist watches in my pocket or even a travel alarm clock in my pocket.

Just this week I visited a kid in jail and couldn't take in my cell phone. Thankfully his dad wore a watch and we could keep track of how much time we had left.
