UGA Away Game Box Score MVG: Will Yeguete

Will Yeguete gave a stellar all around performance in a grind out 64-47 road victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. Yeguete came off the bench scoring 7 points, pulling down 11 rebounds and had 4 steals to lead the Gators with a value score of 78. Scottie Wilbekin's early scoring single handedly kept the Gators in the game after a slow start by the team. Scottie ended with a career tieing and team high 17 points along with 2 boards, 3 assists and a steal to tally 71 value credits. Kenny Boynton had 14 points, 2 assists, 2 steals and no turnovers to total 55 value credits. These three also spearheaded a tough defense that forced the Bulldogs into numerous turnovers.

Georgia tried to slow down the game and set up 3-point shots to upset the Gators. Georgia had early success from the 3-point line while holding the Gators to 1-9 in the 1st half. They also shut down the Gator big men enabling the Bulldogs to maintain a 3 point lead at halftime. The Gators defense picked up in the second half holding Georgia to 20 points and forcing 16 turnovers overall while Murphy, Yeguete and Young picked up their games to build an eventual 18 point Gator lead while mainly playing a seven man rotation.

The Gators continue their road trip with a Saturday evening game against another breed of Bulldog at the Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Mississipi. Mississippi State was blown out this evening by Arkansas, 96-70. It appears to be a down year if you are a basketball playing Bulldog.

Will is grabbing the ball with authority when he is in there and you can see by the little love tap he gave the Georgia player he doesn't mind mixing it up. Glad we are going to have him back next year.

I agree that Scottie saved us last night...he kept us in the game offensively and defensively on a night that nobody else bothered to show up in the 1st half..that's said Will is a stat sheet filler..we really missed him last year..his defense at the point of our press cannot be replicated by anybody else on our team

What happened the first half was that Eric picked up two quick fouls. When he isn't in the game for us, it gets really tough for our offense. Patric was mentally on vacation as well. How do you improve your hands? Yeguete has ridiculous quickness and instinct for rebounding.

I just hope Scottie, Patric, and Yeguete return for their senior year.

Patric does exactly what is needed on the glass. He's been doing a great job of sealing his man all year and when we play zone, he is our best at finding someone to box out. Someone else may grab the board, but there is more to rebounding than getting your hands on the ball. Rebounding should be a team effort and that's really what you see from these guys. That's why one game Young will lead in rebounds, the next it will be Yeguete, Murphy, and so on. I'm not trying to take away from Will, he is a fantastic rebounder, I'm just trying to say watch Young's effort on defense and then try and critique his rebounding.

Will was not a blue chip recruit and his best basketball is still ahead of him. Not that he will ever be as good as Rodman, but he still has a season and a half to improve and guys like him always find their way on to NBA rosters

This is exactly correct. A lot of times, Patric is keeping the opponent's best rebounder off the ball and letting our other guys scoop it up. That's his job on a lot of plays.

Per minute played, Yeguete, despite being a mere 6'7" tall, has been the Gator's leading rebounder, usually by quite a margin, from his Freshman year to now. Exactly like Scottie Wilbekin, has been the best Turnover to Assist player since he was a 16 (or so) year-old freshman.

Yeguete has what is termed "a nose for the ball." Football is probably the best arena to show it. This is what allowed Fran Tarkenton, Roger Staubach and Charlie Ward "FEEL" when defenders were coming to crush them from the back and always turn in the correct direction to avoid the rush. It is not something you can teach, it is a "born" quality.

Thinking that bigger players are going to be "Better" scorers, rebounders, defenders than smaller players is not "clear" thinking, because humans are far more than merely their material parts (The Whole is always greater than the the sum of the parts, something that microbiologists usually can't understand). Remember the 6'7" Round Mound of Rebound? Probably not if you ask such a question.

Wilbekin's speed and quickness saved the first half for us. His play is excellent.

Yeguete was EVERYWHERE in the second half, making great shots, steals, blocks and causing utter chaos. He was, in my opinion, absolutely the most dominant player on the floor in the second half.

The other thing that struck me, coming out of this game, is that this team seems to have excellent chemisty and sincerley places team over individual stats. That will play huge in March.

The biggest difference in the game was our 6 TOs vs their 17 TOs. We did a great job of valuing the ball last night.

I agree with this, as well. Young is playing much harder on that end than a year ago and it shows in overall rebounding numbers, the same way David Lee's rebounding went through the roof when Horford slid into the starting line in 04-05. Young understands that losing track of your man to go for a ball off the iron often ends in unnecessary fouls. Stick with your responsibility, keep your guy off the glass, and trust your teammates to do the same.

A better gauge of Young's rebounding is not what his teammates average, but what the opponents at his position average. That will tell you more.

Pretty sure Scottie and Will will definitely be back next year; Patric is the only one of the three that we really won't know about until the season is over.

The guy literally stopped, jumped up and threw his head back a second after Will waved his hand at him. The announcers laughed and said it was like when one of his sons is annoyed with the other, he'd give him a little backhanded swat to get him out out of his face. Nothing malicious, just a little jab to let him know he is in no mood for nonsense.

I know Will got charged with a foul, but the entertainment value of the replay was worth it.
