I'm getting ready to start filling the application. I got a PIN and figured I would just fill out everything since I can answer all the questions about my son. But it appears that my son is supposed to also get a PIN and fill out his part and then sign it. Is that correct? Is each persons section "protected" (ie, I cant see what he puts in and more importantly, he cant see what I put in)?

I'm pretty sure you can see the whole FAFSA. You have different pin numbers but you can both fill it out. I usually have to wait until my tax return is completed. Filling out the first one is a pain but not so bad for the remaining years. Good Luck.

If you make any decent amount of money, don't expect any king of Financial aid.

True, but you also need to do it if you want a government student loan.
FYI, one year Discover student loans was a better deal for us than the Federal loans.

I don't recall our kids participating at all. We did it simultaneously for twins. We got a bundle, but we didn't make much money last year We'll double our income from last year and double it again for this year. The money we saved their freshman year is worth it no matter what happens from here on out. $58k at Boston U. became about $17k. My son's school was only slightly less and we're paying about $14k. He got a bundle of academic ships before we even filed the FAFSA.
We're filling out next year's forms right now and bracing ourselves for "corrections." BU is assuring us that the changes will be incremental. IIT isn't as flexible, but the FASFA won't affect any of his academic ships.
FWIW, once you fill them out the first time, the second and third time aren't as hard.

If your child happens to get married, because of love of course, your income no longer matters and he or she will qualify for much more aid. Don't ask me how I know this..but I did get a BS from UF without help from my parents.
