by 'cheat on' I refer to songs, that as written , are difficult to sing due to range, high notes, need to be able to sing at low volume or loud, or sing notes very fast, etc. And they 'cheat' on these songs by hiding their inability to sing the song as written by inserting 'artistic impression' to hide the fact that their voice simply can't handle the demands of the song as it was written.

examples that really stand out
---Star Spangled Banner--Have only heard one person sing this song before a sporting even who actually sang the song as it is written. and did not clip notes, change emphasis on note from how it was written, etc. That singer was Robert Merrill singing pregame at Mets Games back in the 60's. He happened to be a well known opera singer whose voice had the range and training to sing the anthem as written

---two songs by the group Styx---lead singer Dennis DeYoung has one of the best voices in rock music in terms of range and ability to hold notes without cracking.

I saw Billy Joel live around 1989.

I was close enough to see that he would sing, "I am..." and then a tape would kick in for "an Innocent Man" right after.
