I just don't understand how an offense can be so inept. I watch other teams and completing a pass isn't a huge deal and it looks so simple. But we've been struggling with it for three years and haven't figured it out yet.

This offense is absolutely brutal. I have no idea what has happened since a month ago, but we're horrid with the ball.

JSU can run the same exact play and get 8-12 yards, and we try the same and get no gain or lose a yard.

It's simply our athleticism that's responsible for the score.

As has been repeated over and over... we don't much talent at WR and I think the coaches know it when you see the conservative play-calling.

GatorLaw
11-17-2012, 03:37 PM
Brissett just not impressive at all today.

True. Makes you wonder why it took so long to name a first string QB. Maybe he looked a lot better in practice.

A 4-yd pass on first down is better than a 2-yd run.

Some of it. We run the ball almost every single 1st and 10. If a defense knows what is coming, very few defenses are going to have a problem.

However, Brissett is missing open receivers all over the place.

Exactly. Other teams routinely complete those kinds of passes, not even great teams, just average teams. Doesn't seem like you'd need All-SEC QBs and receivers to do that.

Nearly half of our problem on offense is play-calling IMO, and it's due to a lack of confidence in our WR's.

JSU has had just 140 yards on 44 plays if you deduct that one 75 yarder on the game's second play.

Perhaps it takes a little bit more than a few practice reps to play college QB. Maybe the coaches were right about who to give the starting job to this year. I just hope that Brissett will stick around and get some quality reps before the bowl game and in the spring. But I guess that our pasing offense will not get any better until we get some better Oline and WRs.

Honestly, if Driskel's our man I hope we commit to running a more spread option style offense next year, put Jeff in a Mullen style, Malzahn style offense and he's significantly better-- he's not a Pocket Passer and trying to make him into one makes him look like Tim looks at times in the NFL.

He played games last year and he played in the first game this year. He has similar reps as Driskel did going into Texas A&M. The coaches were absolutely right about that decision.

Our WRs have been open today (not saying they are great but they are far better than JSU secondary), and the QB has been missing it.

An expanded playbook package against FSU isn't going to change the fact that we just don't have talent at WR this year and the coaches know we don't.

And I also want to pioint something else out... this offense was doing "pretty good" (I'm certainly no saying "spectacular"), but this offense was more versatile when we had WR Solomon Patton to run the jet sweep and play wide-out.

We will try to beat FSU with good defense, special teams, and by playing field position and setting up our offense with short fields. I fully believe we have to have someone who can stretch the perimeter against FSU to keep their D from stacking the box.

Friend of mine at the game on the phone says our WR's have maybe been open on just two passing plays. These guys just can't get open for the most part.

The bad thing is, we usually aren't looking downfield offensively, we're too run-oriented.

For comparisons sake, this defense gave up 49 to Arkansas, 51 to Eastern Kentucky, 31 to Eastern Illinois, 35 to Murray State, and 49 to UT-Martin. They have given up an average of 31.67 points per game against Division 1AA opponents (I excluded the points they gave up to Arkansas).

The offense play calling is out of touch, not consistent, can't create a flow. I watched Dan Mullen just torch ARKY with guys that we wouldn't think were play makers. We throw long once maybe twice a game and its never defended. We just can't make the play, or we give up to early. Keep at it. There was nothing to download. that is just a pop up ad trying to get you to download something. That's why we told you to wait untikl the red "close" button showed up and click it. the ad closes and the game comes up.

No red close button ever showed up to click or I would have clicked it.

No matter, the game is now over, and Vipbox can shove it.

Driskel is a more rounded QB. Can add a threat run. As long as he doesn't come up gimpy......

A coaching friend of mine used to say good defense can make any offense look bad while bad offense can make any defense look good. We saw the later today.

Most frustrating 10-1 offense in memory. Hope we can win a low scoring game in Tally. Not optimistic.

Our O is sooo pitiful I could watch the game but chose not too. This is about as anemic of a uf offense that I can remember. I don't know about you, but it's zero fun to watch. I do enjoy watching our D and that's about it. I'm not sure it's just the OL or play calling or O coaching but I can tell you it stinks. It's unacceptable for a uf team to score one td vs this group. Yes, we are 10-1 but if not for the D it's doubtful we qualify for a bowl game. This is one messed up O.

It's not that cut and dry.

How does that = saying "Brissett is so much better"? I'll wait.

So you were calling for Brissett to play because you don't think he's better?

There is no threat to run when the line is stacked. No threat to pass either. Ergo you almost lose to ULL.

When the hell did I call for him to play outside of maybe the first few games of the year? I'll wait.

I am for pease going to uk and please take the OL coach with you. This team has regressed O and no excuse. The coach has to take responsibility for this crap offense. If I were a wr recruit I'd stay clear away from this program until we have better coaching on the O side of the ball. No improvement over the course of the year, zero, zilch.

Are you ready to admit you were wrong about that now?

The upside on this team would have been so much higher with a good offense. We beat Georgia and have a chance against Bama in Atlanta. We should have a very good defense again next year. I hope we can sign the playmakers needed to fix the offense.

I guess you missed the word "maybe," as in it may or may not have happened, it's been so long. No I won't admit I'm wrong because I'm not, and neither are you in your opinion. There isn't enough to accurately compare them. I will admit that I think Muschamp made the wrong choice in QB and I will never change my opinion on that one.

Okay, so who needs the Midol? How can we have so many whiny fans when we just improved from 7-6 to 10-1 so far?

So the offense is lackluster; we have that to work on. I look around at other conferences and would opine that most teams in these other conferences could use just as much improvment on defense as we do on offense.

Any way you slice it, and no matter who's primarily responsible for it, we're 10-1, 7-1, and have beaten 3 highly ranked teams this year.

Muschamp spoke on radio after the game. He told Pease what to do in the 2nd half knowing UF had the game won and said "let's just go out and win it Brent." Translates to call a conservative 2nd half. His explanation was that Jax State was rushing 4 guys and did not want to turn the ball over or risk injury to Brissett. Just get out with a W was all he wanted so they can begin preparing for FSU.

You can tell he is all about defense.

we may be the worst 10-1 team in the country, but how many teams are 10-1?

In a year where college football is scoring at a record pace of of nearly 30 points per game, our defense, in the best conference in the country is giving up just 12.

I believe some of that but that's not the only reason we struggled on O. I think Muschamp is saying that to try and take some away from the fact our O is not good.

Yeah, not by a longshot. When a receiver is wide open, you have to hit him. When the ball hits you in the hands, you have to catch it. And those problems are totally separate from our inability to pass block (most of the time). Play-calling certainly hasn't been brilliant, but lots of things open up when the players can actually execute the fundamentals.

Just watched the replay. What Jeremy Foley and Will are going to have to learn is that if you're going to schedule 3 creampuffs for home games you're only going to get fans to turn out for those games if you can display some fireworks on offense. Nobody wants to come watch a 23 - -nothing win over an over matched team. In the old days we would be up 30 at the half and get to see the young guys running around all second half while we hang half a hundred. We went totally vanilla against BG, JSU and ULL and not only did it almost cost us a loss against ULL but they were just awful games to watch, why spend the money? Hope they recognize the realities

My guess is that we cannot do this with the 2012 team, because we lack first team and second team playmakers. It really takes this much effort from lots of youngsters just to hang 20 points on a cupcake. The fans in the stands need to understand this, or do what they are doing now--asking for the impossible.
