When is the last time Atlanta played in the Super Bowl?

Their first and so far ONLY appearance came in 1998 when Chris Chandler was the quarterback. Jamal Anderson and the "dirty bird" were alive and well. Eugene Robinson infamously was arrested for soliciting prostitution from an undercover officer the night before the Superbowl in Miami (I think he even got an award for high moral character shortly before his arrest). He played in the game, the team said they weren't distracted, but it had to be a distraction, and they lost to horseface Elway and the Broncos.

As a Giants fan, I wasn't expecting to have to watch this matchup on championship Sunday (the second best football day of the year after Jan.1). If I had to side one way, I'd probably go with Atlanta. But I'll be ok whoever wins if it is as competitive and as exciting as the Bal-Den & Sea-Atl games last weekend.

Plus, they ran over the team that demolished the Niners just a few weeks ago.

Additionally, the Ravens physically beat down the Niners last year. So, while the Niners may win, I wouldn't exactly call them tough.

American football is by far the worst sport in the world. You have a roughing call against the Falcons for a slap on the face guard yet the 49er LBer takes 2 full steps and abuses Ryan on an obvious late hit. Then the 49ers get away with the play of the game for pass interference. Name the sport with the most rules? American football. That's why it has never made it even a tiny bit outside of the country. It can't even compete with high school soccer in Germany.

I was indifferent too but I didn't like the last 4 minutes. If you are going to call roughing for a tickle on the face guard, then you have to eject for a late hit (yes it was, the fricking ball was already past the LOS when the defender got to him). And the non-call for an obvious pass interference at the end really made a good playoff game one of the worst I've seen in years.

Oh Brother! American football is the greatest sport in the world. Please amend your statement to NFL football, which I will admit has been destroyed by Roger Goodell. I knew a ticky tack PF or PI would cost at least one team a trip to the SB. The ratings and $ generated won't suffer, so Goodell will remain in power. But the sport itself has been ruined. You can't even hit a guy hard anymore, even with the shoulders.

WTF, the QB loses his protection when he leaves the pocket, I guess u wouldn't understand since you are such a big fan of German high school soccer

You still have to protect the QB. Read the rules or maybe 3,000 pages is too many rules. Either be consistent or throw the rules away. After watching the Top 100 NFL players of all time, I'd have to say every defensive player before 1985 would have never made in today's game due to the moronic rules. Jack Lambert would have flipped everyone off for every hit he made (that would have been a penalty today).

NFL football is dying due to these stupid rules. Either make them simpler, or take out tackling altogether.

RealGatorFan
01-20-2013, 06:18 PM
That was a PI. Sorry, but the defender was all over the receiver. If you don't call that, then the refs to take back half of the PI calls they made this year. The ball wa sin the air yet the defender was pretty much grinding on him.

That was a PI. Sorry, but the defender was all over the receiver. If you don't call that, then the refs to take back half of the PI calls they made this year. The ball wa sin the air yet the defender was pretty much grinding on him.

When it happened live, I thought it was PI... but on replay, no, it didn't look like PI to me.

The defender was holding the receiver for the entire route, but it was within 5 yards of the LOS, so no foul there. Then when the ball was in the air, he let go, and stuck his arm across to bat the ball down. Looked like a good play by the defender.

Still, I don't like games that follow calls all game, then all of a sudden they pull out a new rule book. I think they need to remove the roughing penalty the way it is today. Take it back to the 90s when a roughing call is really a roughing call. Based on the rules today, FSU had 30 roughing calls on Danny in 1996. Yet, we almost beat the Noles any way and we did get payback in the title game.

The NFL game is becoming boring with all these rules. In a few years, "sacks" won't be allowed and the receiver will be down when he makes the catch. Either let them play the game or change it to Powder Puff Football.

So, based on your reasoning, defenders should hold if the LOS is inside the 5 then. I think that rule should go away once you get inside the red zone.

What was PI on the last drive? Holding the receiver at the spot where the ball was going to arrive anyway?

They could of just called it a face mask ... Would that be ok with you?

Would they have called the hit on a running back? No, the qb becomes a runner when he crosses the line of scrimmage and doesn't get down

If you are talking about the hit on Ryan that dislocated his left shoulder, then you are very wrong. He took a step to his left and threw it and then once the ball was on it's way to the receiver he gets hit hard. Yet, there was no flag for an illegal pass, so he was never cross the LOS.

Yet, the Falcons was called a couple of possessions earlier for glancing Mr Tattoo's face mask. If you think it sounds about right, then this sport has no prayer.

My reasoning? I'm just describing what I saw. If its a penalty to hold the WR within 5 yards of the LOS, then it should have been a foul. But I always thought the defender had 5 yards to play bump coverage.

It sounds like you're the one who wants to add more rules now.

I thought you were talking about the run by Ryan when he left the pocket and gained like 2 yards

Nope, I'd make it simple - you arrive too early = PI. Forget this 5 yard crap. The ball is in the air and you hit the receiver = PI. Same with the receiver too - push the defender while the ball is in the air = Offensive PI. Which BTW, the refs seem to get the offensive PI almost always correct.

Otherwise, I'd never throw the ball inside the 7 simply because the defenders can jump all over the receivers.

It shouldn't have been a call at all.

I was rooting hard for the Falcons (mainly because I hate SF and Harbaugh) and they definitely had some calls go against them in the game, but let's face it: that was an epic choke job. Up 17-0 at home against a rookie QB. Ryan had 271 yds, 3 TD's and 24 pts in the fist half. And....not one pt in second half? Inexcusable. The game turned on his fumbled snap. They were on their way for a score. You simply can't give away a possession at that point when your defense is that bad. They needed to outscore SF. Everyone knew that going in. When you don't score a point in the 2nd half you can't blame the refs. The refs always suck anyway.

I didn't see the defender making significant contact with the WR while the ball was in the air. He certainly didn't hit the WR while the ball was in the air. Good no call.

No that play was fine. I was talking about the hit where he dislocated his left shoulder. They call a roughing earlier for a touch on Mr Tattoo's facemask (and my wife who never watches football laughed at that call), yet they call nothing on that play on Ryan. Either call it right or don't call it all.

Sorry I saw a defender all over the receiver. His entire front of his body was making contact. I doubt many receivers could make the catch like that.

Here's the video:

He (the defender) clearly is holding, but again, its within 5 yards of the LOS. So there is no holding foul.

Then he (the defender) LETS GO. That's when the ball is in the air. And then the defender knocks the ball down, WITHOUT making contact with the WR.

Now, you can't see exactly when the ball is in the air vs when he lets go of the WR. But its certainly not obvious either way, and the WR wasn't being touched at all when the ball arrived.

So again good NO call.

The 49ers are the only team that has played in more than one Super Bowl and never lost one. Everybody else who has won and never lost is 1-0.

Took the over (48 ) when in Vegas last weeks and with 38 points in the first half I thought it was an easy win. Only two second half TDs, though. But the last pushed the total over!
