Te’o's family, and his father in particular, were floored when a native Hawaiian newspaper, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, printed an incredibly embarrassing picture of the island’s native son following Alabama’s 42-14 drubbing of the Golden Domers.
The picture showed Crimson Tide running back Eddie Lacy upright, powering over Te’o, who is on the ground in a pile of dust. It is not exactly the most flattering picture of Te’o — and it was not necessary, especially the way Te’o's father, Brian, sees it.
Brian Te’o is now imploring those on Honolulu to cancel their subscriptions

It probably WAS taken out of context.
It should have read, "shown here is the 15th time in the game that ND Defensive player and runner-up in the Heisman Trophy and Hawaii native Manti Te'o was on the ground after an Alabama runner had just gained a first down. Picture is from early in the 2nd quarter of the BCS National Championship Game"
Then it would be in full context and as close to accurate as possible.

I have no idea how many tackles he made or missed, but the whole idea of his father pushing for cancellations of the newspaper simply because they posted a pic of what was a fairly common sight in the game is laughable.
How many times have we seen the Gainesville paper put a photo in of a Gator loss which shows the other team scoring or hauling in a pass or running over a Gator?--probably several.
A game of this magnitude, with Bama winning it convincingly SHOULD have a photo in the media showing a Bama player doing something positive. Not the Gumps fault the ND players can't tackle and a photographer just happened to get the shot.

The guy made some decent plays on some INTs where the ball was deflected or the QB didn't see him, but other than that there really isn't much there. Everyone makes a big deal about his tackle count but that is only good for ~50th in FBS and worse than 100th for solo tackles. And, only 5.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks on the season? Really?

Wow. I have weird feelings about this. Why are we water carriers for Bama all of a sudden? You would think by the gloating that we had won the NC, instead of looking like fools against the Big East. Truth is ND, including Teo, were overrated. Not his fault! How is that the kid, or his dad's fault? For the hometown paper to print it, when there were uncountable equally embarrassing moments for ND in the game, is kind of a slap in the face to a local kid. Furthermore, lets put it in perspective; Saban is scum and Bama is a lowdown dirty football factory. The SAT score of one ND player probably equals Bama's entire roster. I hated to see ND in the game, because they didn't belong there and I wanted a good game... that is all. I don't gloat over a hated rival with a dirty coach and program winning an NC. Why would I? Why would you?
secgator
01-13-2013, 11:53 PM
I don't think many in here are gloating over a hated rival as much as finding what Te'o dad is calling for to be a genuine laugher. It may have been a local hero boy, but his team got destroyed in the biggest college game of the year, and they chose to use a pic which should, if nothing else...demostrate just HOW much ND was ovdermatched. I doubt it was the intent necessarily of the paper to try and embarress Te'o as much as show just how much of a slaughter the game actually was, and how much better the Gumps were than that sacred school up north which had NO BUSINESS whatsoever being in the game at all.
May as well show some pics of Te'o---there ain't gonna be many chances for a local boy from Hawaii to EVER be in the BCSCG.

01-14-2013, 12:07 AM
I don't think people hate him as much as they realize the J. Clownsy and Jarvis Jones alone dwarf him on the field, yet because he played for ND he was lionized. He got more votes for a pure defensive player than anyone in history and there are at least 2 kids this year that are light years better than him, let alone the other 70 years of the award, or however many years it's been. There have literally been dozens of defensive players way better than hin just in my 25 years of really watching CF. Seeing him play a real team and exposed for what he is, a very good but by no means singular talent was why there is the schaedenfruede. Just more of the ridiculous sycophants that slurp up all things ND getting him far more than he earned.
Having said all of that, by all accounts he is an excellent human being and I hope he has a great career, just happy to things level more to where they should have been all along. Reminds me of Troy Smith in 2006, all season he was all world and his team was unbeatable, and in no small part because of our game he fell from 1st rounder all the way to the third round.

Maybe you've seen him play a lot, I haven't. The only time I've seen him play was in the NC game. And considering the number of tackles he missed in that game I think he probably would be a starter for most teams in the SEC but I don't think he'd be anything exceptional. Certainly nothing like all the accolades he's gotten at ND. Maybe the NC game was an aberration, maybe he normally encounters players like Lacy and the other Alabama RB and stops them cold. But if so he certainly forgot how to do it in the NC game.
Loosely translated, in English Manti Te'o means Missed Tackle.

Exactly. Some peoples brains on this board should be donated to science. Using their logic:
None of our Gator defenders.are big east caliber because they got owned from the jump by Louisville. None of our Gator defenders last year were SEC caliber because Alabama and LSU rolled over us.

Making a tackle isn't getting tripped over. There are a lot of pictures out there, including a TD run, where the hit was on the two, and the RB that was tackled, was four yards deep in the end zone when he landed.
Teo will be fine and go on to the next level, but the bigger backs ran over him at will. The pictures tell a different story than the stat line.
Bama went after him in the game. Throwing over him, running over him. Blocking him. It looked like they went after ND's best, and it worked.

As REM08 said--that photo embodied what the game actually WAS it a nutshell. Period. It isn't like Te'o probably hasn't had more than his share of good press all over the island throughout his senior year, but when a photo shows him in a somewhat negative light--albeit the friggin truth---everyone should boycott the paper and cancel their subscription?? Yeah, right.
You can bet that there were photos of Te'o up on stage at the Heisman wearing his lei or whatever that was. Fine--it was him in a moment of glory. There were no doubt photos of him making one his many tackles over the course of the season against mediocre opponents....fine. But in a game that was for all the marbles, a photo showing what was a very common sight...ND player on their arse being run over and run around by a Bama player--sorry, the truth may hurt and be embarressing to his dad but the game was what it was--a slaughterfest and this photo states it perfectly.
How many folks were bellyaching and whining when the photo of Tebow crying at the SEC game loss to Alabama back in 09 was plastered on every paper in the free world? Rallying the public to boycott the papers which showed THAT photo?? Admonishing folks to cancel their subscriptions simply because the photo was an iconic image of how much that loss meant to Tim (and Gator fans as well)?? I don't remember much outrage from that one, and it had FAR more significance than this photo.
So Te'o had a bad game...big friggin deal. He was likely the ONLY local home boy from Hawaii who has ever played in a game of that magnitude and the whole sports world has seen or heard about him all season for a multitude of reasons. The photo ran--the photo made an accurate statement. Sorry dad--the truth is what it is and your boy's team lost and played like manure---it wasn't as if Te'o lost the game himself either. The whole team played badly and need to accept the good with the bad....especially a photo which paints the entire game story concisely and ACCURATELY.

Upon receiving the news of the two deaths, Te'o went out and led the Fighting Irish to a 20-3 upset of Michigan State, racking up 12 tackles. It was heartbreaking and inspirational. Te'o would appear on ESPN's College GameDay to talk about the letters Kekua had written him during her illness. He would send a heartfelt letter to the parents of a sick child, discussing his experience with disease and grief. The South Bend Tribune wrote an article describing the young couple's fairytale meeting—she, a Stanford student; he, a Notre Dame star—after a football game outside Palo Alto.
Did you enjoy the uplifiting story, the tale of a man who responded to adversity by becoming one of the top players of the game? If so, stop reading.

That's what true journalism is supposed to look like. There is actually background information and facts to backup what they are writing about.
But to put it simply, the ND linebacker made up a story about how his girlfriend died. She wasn't his girlfriend, she didn't die, she didn't even exist. The pictures used are from somebody else's FB account.

My wife used to work with a guy that would tell stories about his life in Cuba and the death of his wife and kids, over coming childhood disease, etc. He got all kinds of sympathy from his co-workers. Then one day my wife ran into his mother, and mentioned how hard her son had it, and the mother was shocked. "He never lived in Cuba, he was never married, he had no childhood illness ... ". It seems like some people are compulsive liars and sympathy junkies. It's a mental disorder. Maybe Te'o has a reasonable explanation for all this, but I doubt it.

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te'o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. Per ESPN
Te'o issued a statement Tuesday afternoon:
"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.
"To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.
"It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.
"I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.
"In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.
"Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."
He was asked again about his girlfriend on Jan. 3 prior to the BCS title game. He said: "This team is very special to me, and the guys on it have always been there for me, through the good times and the bad times...
So after reporting to ND on the Dec 26th he kept the hoax going on Jan. 3?! Messed up. How can he dodge the fact he knows and has interacted with Tuiasosopo who started the hoax? Is it possible that Te'o didn't know? Yes. Did he know?
But a friend of Tuiasosopo told Deadspin he was quote "80 percent sure" that Te'o participated and did so with publicity in mind.

I'm... I don't even know the right words to describe this. Notre Dame knew on the 26th? Manti was still telling the story before and after the championship? ESPN has known for 10 days and didn't do anything with the story?
This story was his entire Heisman campaign, and it was all a lie? This is going to end up in a marketing textbook somewhere, and I'm not even sure if it will be presented positively or negatively. I mean, it got him to second in the Heisman voting when his stats say he shouldn't have even been in the conversation, that's pretty impressive. Then again, it was all a lie, that is usually frowned upon. Stretching the truth? No big deal, but straight lying about someone's death? Wow.

Te’o has many questions to answer regarding the situation. Regardless of whether he does so publicly, he’ll be doing so privately in the interviews and meetings that will precede the draft. Teams will want to know whether he can be trusted, and likewise what flaw possibly exists in his personality to prompt the fabrication of a girlfriend who would die during the season and draw Gipper-like attention to his football career.
“It could be ugly,” one league source with extensive knowledge of the pre-draft process told PFT.

I would like to know on what basis ESPN and ND are selling the "this was a hoax against Te'o" line. The evidence to the contrary is overwhelming. How many times in interviews has he talked out about her death and how he was on the phone with her while she was in the hospital! Did the hoax go as far Tuiasosopo pretending to be a girl on the phone with Te'o? Come on! And then there is all the stories about them meeting and spending time together. Where did those come from? Te'o and his family, who clearly lied about it considering she never existed.
As messed up as this hoax is what is worst is ESPN and ND think they can cover this up with the delusion that Te'o is the victim. Now, I don't know Te'o or anybody else involved. I wasn't there for any of it. All I know is that there is no way that Te'o/ND 's statements and deadspin's article can be true at the same time.
My point is that at this juncture Manti Te'o is going to come out on top. As he is the "victim" Instead of doing due diligence on this ESPN and ND has decided to believe Te'o and prop him up as such. Te'o was the victim back in Sept when he lost his "girlfriend" and grandmother. Now he is the victim again. If the internet rumors are true about him he is yet again the victim and people will dump sympathy on him.

I just got home and logged in, can somebody please summarize?
Manti Te'o's "dead girlfriend" that we all heard about this whole season wasn't his girlfriend, isn't dead, and doesn't exist at all, she was just a twitter account using pictures stolen from some other girl's facebook profile.
Notre Dame and Te'o say he was the victim of a hoax, that doesn't really lineup given that supposedly he had met her in person multiple times.

The reports that Te'o overcame the death of his girlfriend this season is a Hoax. It was exposed that the twitter accounts, photographs, and stories were all faked. Te'o is now claiming he is the victim, rather than the perpetrator, of the hoax.

Though for someone to truly believe in Mormonism, he'd have to be somewhat gullible and naive. One day he'll realize that is just a hoax too and he'll be just as surprised.
Or maybe he's behind the scenes of both of these carefully crafted rues.

Isn't there something written or implied in the "Heisman creed" for lack of a better term---about sportsmanship, INTEGRITY, etc??? Gotta wonder just how many of those who actually voted for Te'o are having serious buyer remorse now--first, after the incredulous over rated hype about his superstar ability being exposed as a fraud against the Gumps...and 2ndly--him being an outright liar and likely, sociopathic derranged individual.
You can't make this sort of stuff up. Amazing, sad, and yet almost a relief now in reptrospect.....just imagine as one post in this thread mentioned--what if he had WON the Heisman. Geez.

Is it possible it's a hoax? Maybe. If youve seen the movie Catfish, you might believe it. There's only one problem with his "hoax" story...he went on record that he met her after a game against Stanford, obviously they didnt and he had to know that his online "girlfriend" would read or hear the reports of how they supposedly met. So, what's his story if he truly believed it was a real woman he was communicating with? That she also was in on the lie about how they met? I guess its possible that he was embarrassed to admit to friends/family that he had actually never met his girlfriend and agreed with "her" that they would tell everyone that they actually met at the football game, and once they actually did meet in person it wouldnt matter anyways. What a weird story. this guy is either one of the dumbest, most naive guys in the history of guys, or he is one a sick conniving SOB.

If they knew about this Dec 26th, then they've had plenty of time to get their cover story straight. The article linked on page 4 quotes Te'o's dad as saying she traveled to Hawaii a couple of times to see Te'o. It also says that she was supposed to go to a ND home game with 40 other family members, just a couple of weeks after she "died". Perhaps Te'o couldn't pull off that trick, so he pretended she died .... who knows. It's starting to sound like he may be gay. Not that I care about his sex life, but this is a pretty elaborate hoax that apparently went on for three years, so there is probably a reason for it.

I read some article where he said "She told me not to miss a game, she would have wanted me to play" ... that was his excuse.
The 2012 season was a Manti Te'o story book, although not all of the chapters were positive. On Sept. 12, within hours, he was given news that his grandmother in Hawaii and his girlfriend at Stanford had died, the latter after a battle with cancer.
He said girlfriend Lennay Kekau "made me promise, when it happened, that I would stay and play," Te'o said Sunday night.
Stay and play he did. He was the heart and soul of a team that needed every inch of every organ to get to 12-0. That included stunning goal-line stands and dozens of pressure-packed, inspirational moments. In the middle of each was Te'o.

I agree. The guy lied, and I dont think it was about the Heisman or endorsements. Ill bet it was a small, personal lie that got bigger and bigger as the press zoomed in on his personal life. Is he gay? Dont know. But he sure went through a lot of effort to pretend he had a girlfriend when he could have probably been dating a Ms. Hawaii competitor.
