Irish on verge of losing Rivals100 commitment...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Multiple sources tell Irish Illustrated that Notre Dame will publicly lose four-star linebacker Alex Anzalone in the next 24 hours and that the Rivals100 linebacker will enroll at Florida by the end of the week. Anzalone has already informed Notre Dame and Florida of his decision to switch his commitment to the Gators.

McMillian and Anzalone should tear it up fairly early. Rolin, I think will redshirt for his leg. And it's up to Hearns and Davis to try to step in and compete. If one (or both) show that, then I think there's definitely room for all these LB's to see time.

I honestly could give a rip about how our class compares with others since what matters far more is how a recruiting class fills out your roster (after all, recruiting classes don't play each other; teams do), but how are we at six after the Anzalone enrollment on Scout?

Scout's been pretty consistently down on us this year. I mean, relatively speaking. The sixth best class in the country is still pretty sweet. But comparatively.
For example, ESPN has Kelvin Taylor as the best running back in the country. Rivals has him fifth. Scout has him eighth. And they're lower on Hargeaves than just about anyone in the world.

Since we're at 26 and have room for 4 more(?) how about a DE, DT, CB, RB(Collins)? If we miss on Collins then a FB/TE/QB to replace. I would be pumped. As for another DE and DT, I'll be impressed if the staff gets one legit at each position. I would rather not offer a DL spot to a project as they more likely end up transferring. I suppose to the staff a backup QB like Woulard is more important than a third RB but darnit I want to see Collins play for us.

I don't know, man. A shot to land DE Elijah Daniel or flip DE Jason Hatcher AND also having a shot at DT's Montravius Adams and Jaynard Bostwick is pretty epic... I wouldn't imagine any of those names would end up transferring... unless it was some off-the-field-issue.

Agreed, take any two of those four DL. Add a top CB and one of Alex Collins, QB, TE, FB and it's a stellar, balanced class. Am still not clear on how many we can take but if it's 30 and staff can get a pair of those DL and it makes the final two spots a tough decision assuming there's quality available at CB/RB/TE/QB.
Would like to see a thread discussion that assumes two of the DL and a top CB and then how to solve the problem of who or which position gets the final spot. I'm not sure we're really in with a top TE or FB prospect so seems like it would be down to a QB or RB, and I'm just hoping we still have a shot with Collins- don't know really.
But back to Anzalone- a huge get for us.

but how are we at six after the Anzalone enrollment on Scout?
Doesn't seem unreasonable from my perspective. A&M must wonder why they are #8 on Rivals with 34 commits of similar "star" quality to us. Look at Michigan's class, overwhelmingly players ranked top 25 at their position, whereas we have a number of commits ranked below 50th at theirs. It doesn't really matter to me because I believe our players coached by our staff would beat the rest.

Exactly. He won't gain a huge benefit from spring ball, but rehab on campus, adjustment to college classes and campus life, additional time at training table, working with our strength staff, etc., will put him ahead of the Summer B arrivals. Given our depth issues at the position, he could compete for the two deep.

Two points: apparently those who thought Muschamp couldn't close are proven wrong this year.
Also, it is easy to call a kid who flip flops indecisive or "flaky" as ND fans are now calling Alex but none of us knows what is going on behind the scenes. Maybe Alex wanted UF all along but was getting heavy handed pressure from his parents to go to ND and the Kelly interview was able to break that logjam.

I'm not ruling out that he may see a couple snaps but his position is on the defensive side of the ball. College is a lot different then high school.

Really? Opposing fans hated Meyer because he kept relentlessly following their commitments, and you're going to claim that Meyer never flipped other team's recruits? Really?

MadduxFan is right, Meyer did flip more than his share of recruits late from other schools.
Off the top of my head:
Omar Hunter (ND)
Juston Trattou (ND)
Brendan beal
John Brown (FSU?)

James WIlson (FSU)

Agreed. What's more, I think Urban practically invented the "flip". Guy did not quit on a recruit even after they had announced. At the time, there was still some kinda unwritten, "coaches honor" rule being used. Pissed off a LOT of coaches and changed recruiting. It's now, no holds barred.

Do you mean Finch, the safety from Indiana? He was committed to Michigan and Indiana at one point. Wasn't McCray committed to scUM at one point? Torrey Davis was an FSU commit at one point, the Pounceys where as well when they were like Sophmores and David Nelson from ND. I do find it interesting how many kids that flip don't seem to live up to their rankings.

Regardless of who "stole" who, the main reason we got AA was because Brian Kelly showed he was a coach that has his eye on the next level and could jump at any time, and don't think there won't bee a lot of coaches going after some of ND's recruits and using this as a means to steal them.
It was said that AA was already on the edge for UF anyway, and Kelly's visit to interview for an NFL job was just the final push he needed to say he's not taking a chance with a HBC who is telling him one thing and doing another.
It wouldn't surprise me one bit if ND lost a couple more recruits because of Kelly's actions.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the use of the term "flip". Most of the examples cited above are players that I expected to come to Florida anyway. Trent Richardson would have been a flip. Freaking Ray Ray would have been a flip.Jeffcoat at Texas would have been a flip. Brantley is not a flip. Patchan is not a flip. Even if they were, you sure you want to use those two as your examples? A "flip" is not someone who commits early, then wavers and takes his visits as a soft verbal or whatever. I don't remember sweating Brantley or the others as late as January, did you?
What I'm referring to is that awful gut-wrenching feeling I had on NSD in 2009 or whatever, when GC had front story pages on recruits that were to decide on NSD between USC, Penn State, Texas, and UF. Absolutely zero of those picks chose the Gators. We went something like 0-for-5 on those home run hitters. A recruitnik like AZ can look it up, it was the year we tried to get Jeffcoat, who went to Texas. There were at least two other Prime Timers that went to USC that same day. I'm sorry I can't remember the specific names, you tend not to remember the ones you strike out on. Hell ,we had kids dump us for FSU and UT on signing day! That, my friends, is a true "flip", and if all the Urban apologists on here want to act like that never happened, that's cool. But it's untrue. I assume you same guys are giving Urban credit for "flipping" Elam? It also follows that if the Powell kid from Daytona Beach Mainland goes to OSU, that will be a "flip" for Urban? Give me a freaking break.

Yeah good call, he flipped from Mich to Indiana, then to UF. Name was on the tip of my tongue.
By the way, I remember him coming out of nowhere but don't remember how it went about. This is what I found.
Gator coach Urban Meyer said Florida kind of stumbled into Finch.
"After appraising the top-100 list, I saw that he was ranked highly and I wanted to know where he was going," Meyer said.
"I knew Warren Central from my days at Notre Dame. I called the coach, and he said, 'Coach, you'll never believe this, but we just finished talking about Florida.' He played in the Orlando all-star game, and the kid loves Florida. Five minutes later, I was on the phone with (Finch). Without watching one speck of tape on him, I asked him if he wanted to come down for a visit. We thought he was a great kid and a good-looking safety, and his tape just solidified it.
"We offered him, and he decided to come. It's unbelievable because I didn't go to Indiana once the whole time."

Kelly really left Cinn. in a low-class way. I can only speculate that Kelly must have made certain representations to some of his recruits (which were obviously false), and Anzalone realized that Kelly was full of shite.
IMO, another coach may have been able to get away with this stunt, however Kelly has a track record of not being true to his players. I'll give Urban some props.. When he left Utah, he showed some class by coaching them in the bowl game. Kelly abandoned ship at the first chance he had.

Oh, and you keep mentioning Jeffcoat. You do realize we got the number 1 DE in Powell and the number 2 DE in Chris Martin in 2010.
You are correct, I must apologize. I'm getting my recruiting years mixed up, understandable that one won't remember all the heartbreak from prior NSDs. You are correct, Jeffcoat was a recruit we missed during a very good 2010 year. However, as I correctly remembered in an earlier post, the year I'm thinking of was 2009. Jeffcoat was not in that year, you're right. 2009 was the year we had 17 commits, almost a third of them were 3 stars.
And I do believe we are talking semantics here. If you want to credit Urban with inventing the "flip", then fine. I am just glad that, for the first time in recent memory, we are winning over more of these undecided or wavering recruits. Because I'm a recruiting newbie, my memory's a little patchy, but I distinctly remember the punch in the gut watching the All Star games in 2009, waiting in vain for recruits to pick the Gator hat. Since I didn't have work today, I was able to use Rivals to jog my memory a little. So you're telling me you don't remember Urban losing:
Frankie Telfort, Jawanza Starling, and Jarvis Jones to USC
Marsalis Teague and Nukeese to Tennessee
Ray Ray Buchanan to Da U
Greg Reid to FSU
That was one year, 2009, and these are just the ones I could remember to look up.
Did not mean to offend, because even in excellent recruiting years like 2010, we did in fact strike out on studs like Jeffcoat, but also Jeff Luc and Christian Green (FSU) and Nickell Robey(USC). Happens all the time.
All I meant to do was express my support for what Coach Muschamp is doing this year, and in my opinion, I am enjoying this recruiting year much better than 2009.
Terribly sorry if I backhandedly made your Lord and Savior Urban Meyer look minimally worse by comparison. It will probably happen again.
Now can you be a man and admit you are using Chris Martin's situation out of context? As of National Signing Day 2010, Chris Martin was a Cal Berkeley Treehugger. To say "Urban got the #1 and #2 DE on NSD so screw Jeffcoat" is not exactly historically accurate.

Thankfully no. I've seen snow a grand total of 3 times. ditor’s note: National Signing Day was Wednesday and Gators coach Will Muschamp announced the 2013 recruiting class. Eight members enrolled early and began classes in January. GatorZone.com caught up with the players for a Q&A series.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Alex Anzalone could be the poster boy for college football recruiting in the 21st Century.
A highly recruited inside linebacker out of Wyomissing (Pa.) High, Anzalone was in the public spotlight long before enrolling at UF last month.
He originally committed to Ohio State, later switched to Notre Dame and eventually decided on Florida. Anzalone did all this while keeping an active Twitter account.
You can imagine what that must be like in the rabid online world of college football fans.
Anzalone is listed at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds and was ranked among the top inside linebacker prospects in the nation last season.
Here is our Q&A with Anzalone:
Q: What is the main thing you want to get out of being an early enrollee?
A: I think just getting a head start on everything, just getting used to going to class, getting around campus, workouts, getting coached in spring practice and learning the playbook.
Q: What do you see as your greatest asset coming into the program?
A: I think right now at least I have the size to play and fit in. I think I can keep up with SEC speed. Those are really the main two attributes of my game – my size and speed.
Q: Are you glad you’re finally off the stage that comes with being a highly touted recruit?
A: After I switched, I haven’t even read anything. At this point I really don’t talk to the media too much and have to do articles every day. I’m definitely relieved it’s all over with.
Q: In the end why did you pick Florida?
A: I’m most comfortable here. You get a good education but compete for a national championship. There are good people all around the program. The people around the program definitely haven’t changed since I’ve been here. It just means the whole recruiting thing is real when it comes to Florida.
Q: What is something someone doesn’t know about you?
A: I could have played Division I lacrosse. I guess that is interesting.
Q: What’s the best day you ever had on a football field?
A: When we won the state championship this past year. It was the first state championship in school history and there is no moment like that I’ve ever had on the field.
Q: I notice you are from Taylor Swift’s hometown; do you know her?
A: I have friends who are family friends with them. I don’t really see her -- when she was younger, yeah, but not after she became famous.
Q: What’s a goal you have for spring football?
A: My goal is just to get acclimated to the players here and the speed of the game and really just getting coached up and learn the playbook.

ditor’s note: National Signing Day was Wednesday and Gators coach Will Muschamp announced the 2013 recruiting class.

He will be one of the top linebackers in the nation in a few years because of that. Lacrosse players make great LB's.

He definitely seems like the more shady one of the two brothers... I personally don't think he's that good of a coach, I mean he gave up before halftime... I personally liked watching Alabama butt rape his team...
Kelly is a very good coach. You're crazy. Bama would have butt raped any team. (ATM) things are finally shifting, slowly but surely, though,
