Down the street from my mom's house in Charlotte is the Mecca of grocery stores. It is the Morrowcroft Harris-Teeter by Southpark. A full kitchen sits behind the deli area, inumerable fresh and fantastic offerings tempt you. I have eaten many great meals from their deli case. They also have both a hot bar and salad bar. The butcher has a case of aging steaks with labels noting their date of availability. Pricey, yes. But, close to Publix. While I know, and haved shopped in different Harris-Teeter stores, that they are not all like the Morrowcroft store. It is my favorite grocery store.

I also love Publix, especially BOGO on my favorites. But, I hate that their deli is so limited, and that their deli items are not fresh. Deli salads served in presealled cartons seems walmartish.

My first job was as a bag boy at Publix in high school. My employment experience at Publix was so rewarding I seriously considered bypassing enrollment at UF in lieu of working my way up the chain at Publix. The vast majority of the employees at our store location loved working for Publix too. Everyone was singularly focused on customer satisfaction; it was more than just words. Ultimately I attended UF and graduated a couple of times. HOWEVER, my positive experiences with Publix as an employee and consumer, will never be forgotten.

I worked for Publix as a bag boy in high school for a while. Very positive experience.

Being in the military, I've lived all over and can easily say that Publix is the best all-around grocery store out there. Others do equal and occasionally surpass Publix in some areas: price, selection, etc. However, as others have noted, no other grocery store chain puts the emphasis on customer service that Publix does with its employees. I say this as a former employee and customer. Simply amazing.

Miss Publix - lots of great stuff about it. Clean stores, very good deli, decent "generic" Publix brand items. In the northern VA area where I live Trader Joe's is by far my favorite - can do a full shop in practically no time at all. Harris Teeter is not bad either - but is no Publix.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in the U.S. who doesn't like Trader Joe's. Yes, the prepared food is good. That being said, I hate that they only sell there own brand. It necessitates making one trip to Publix for regular groceries and then going to Trader Joe's as well. Want Heinz Ketchup? Can't get it. Want Hellman's Mayo? Can't get it. Fresh Deli meat? Nope.

I'd much rather do all my shopping at Publix and if I need something speciality hit up Fresh Market.

Almost all prepared foods at the Publix Deli are frozen. Anything you get in the deli hot case that is not chicken or pork is frozen (popcorn chicken is frozen). Considering that, it's pretty decent food. They are supposed to rotate food out often and stir it so that it stays hot/fresh. If they don't you get subpar food. Tenders, Rotis, and fried chicken are never frozen and they are really good. The pork comes mostly cooked and seasoned but its not frozen either.

The sub meat gets thrown out at the end of the day, as well as the cheese. Only pickles from the sub shop are kept over, all other vegetables are thrown out and fresh each day.

Trader Joe's rocks for some things. Prices on almonds and walnuts are better than most places. I got five organic kiwi's there, for the price of two non organics at Publix, so they have their niche.

Whole Foods has a much better produce section with a lot more choices than Publix.

But there is a Publix everywhere near us, and it has its own set of things they are good at as well. But even they vary depending on the area they are in. The one's near the better area's will have things the lesser area's don't.

Been there, our office is about 3 or 4 blocks from there, corner of Church and Rosalind. On rare occasions when I have to work in the office I sometimes walk to that Publix for lunch.

BTW I learned this afternoon just how much Publix's mark up is on some items. Earlier in the week I was at Bar Harbor Seafoods and as I walked through their retail store I looked at the prices on some of the seafood. Key West Pink shrimp were 5.99lb. Tonight the wife brought home a pound of Key West Pink shrimp from Publix that were 13.95lb. I'm guessing Publix probably gets their seafood from Bar Harbor, that is a heck of a markup.

Unless they import it from Tampa, it just isn't Cuban bread.

This is silly. First of all, Tampa is not even in Cuba. And even if Tampa were to be the birthplace of Cuban bread, it is ridiculous to think that it couldn't be made just as good somewhere else. It's just yeast and flour, man.

Some of the best NY style pizza I've ever eaten has been in Florida. In fact, when I finally got to visit NYC 8 years ago (been back half a dozen times since), I was disappointed in the quality of the pizza in local Brooklyn and Manhattan pizza parlors.

I think great food is made by people who invest their time, money, and love into their product. Location isn't such a big deal...

In some cases yes and others not so much. I really think the pizza and bagels in nyc are better than anywhere else. I also haven't had a really good sub outside of Florida. That doesn't mean you can't have a pizza or sub or Cuban outside of a certain location just that they won't be as good for whatever reason. Unless toon is saying this is like a Bourbon situation and no Cuban made outside of Tampa is an actual Cuban.

This is an interesting argument to me. Why are those items better in NYC? Is it something to do with the location itself (water quality, increased knowledge/awareness of preparing that type of food, etc) or is it because the location is the "birthplace" or "home" of a particular dish?

I don't think the tap water difference makes a difference in flavor that can be noticed, and since many ex-NYers have brought their pizza business with them (like Anthony's Pizza (the one by Howell Branch), among others, here in Orlando), why would there be any good reason why those establishments can't serve just as good pizza, if not better, than the places in NYC? Another interesting thing was that a year and a half ago, I went to Chicago with a group of friends. We ate at Uno's (the original deep dish pizza) and I thought it was overrated, big time. And so did everybody else. We had a better deep-dish pizza at a much more casual joint by the Pier. Just think there's a lot of hype and hot air when it comes to anecdotal reviews of food and restaurants.

They can't see Fairway, Zabars, Trader Joes, or Whole Foods.

At Zabars people sell the tickets to the deli department line for 50 bucks in NYC. The store does a million a day - one store on certain holidays.

Tampa was indeed the birthplace of Cuban bread. I'm sure there are places outside of Tampa that make fine Cuban bread but Publix is not one of them. Go to a resturant like the Columbia and get a loaf of Cuban bread, then get a loaf of Publix cuban bread, there is a world of difference.

Well, I agree with you that great food is made by folks who invest time, money and soul and location may not make a difference. I travel a lot, probably too much, and sample many, many restaurants. I think Philly cheesteaks in Philly are kind of nasty while better someplace else, for example. Shrimp and grits are generally better in Charleston than anywhere else but Louie's Backyard down in Key West serves up an excellent dish themselves. There some places that do a great barbecue brisket but not like they do it in Texas.

The Cuban sandwich debate is a fun one and it is one that is never resolved and usually it is between restaurants here in Tampa versus Miami. Everybody has an opinion of who has the best Cuban sandwich. The difference can be a lot of things. How the ham is cut, too much puerco asado or not enough, mayo or none, salami or no, etc. But, I think thw first test is the bread. If it isn't there then it is just a sub. I can't explain it but if anyone has ever had a Cuban sandwich at Hugos, West Tampa Sandwich Shop, Brocato's, Gene Anthony's or Aguila Sandwich Shop then you know the difference. Heck, I can't explain it but the bread makes that big of a difference. Ane many agree that La Segunda here in Tampa is the best for that.

Personally, I never have a Cuban sandwich outside of Tampa or Miami. There is just no point. :-)

Don't get started on the best deviled crab, that is another hotly contested debate.

Well, Tampa isn't the birthplace of Cuban bread but it is the birthplace of the Cuban sandwich but that is a whole other debate in itself. One of our posters, Ennis, I believe is related to the family that owns this historic bakery which many believe is the baker of the best Cuban bread around.

Don't know but I wish they hadn't. Maybe they moved to Orlando because they weren't very good amongst prime competition and Orlando has none.

You have to understand that that Tampa and then Miami have the oldest Cuban communities in the US. The Cuban bakeries in both cities have been around for generations with recipes and methods that have perfected over many, many years. In a sense, practice makes perfect. Orlando can't make that claim and I doubt New York can either. Now, you put New York Italian bakeries up against anyone in the US and you probably have no competition and for the same reason.

For more insight into the baking of Cuban bread, check out this video shot at an old Cuban bakery here in Tampa called Mauricio Faedo's. Lol!

I dont think this is the case at all. I think of it more like this, my mom and grandma are really good cooks (most are), and I am a pretty good cook. No matter how exactly I follow their recipes when they make the same thing its always better. Now, consider the owners of successful NYC pizza places probably arent picking up and moving to start all over in Florida, its probably an employee or family member and something gets a little lost in the translation. Its not that its bad food by any means, I am sure its still pretty damn good. Its just not as good as NYC. And there may just be something in the water that makes a difference, not to the flavor but to the texture. There is a Dom Demarcos out here and they custom built a water system just for the restaurant to mimic the water in New York.

Too bad that's not allowed in Florida. I visited Tokyo, and in a huge department store they served free beer (small cups) at the top of the escalator on each floor. Alot of men shop with their wives in Tokyo.

It's allowed. I work at a Whole Foods here in Florida and you can drink inside the store and on patio outside. We even have several stores in the state with beer/wine bars so you can drink while you shop (or have a drink while your significant other shops).

my favorite Publix made/packaged products

1. their Greenwise(organic) ice cream---chocolate or vanilla. Before you laugh. This ice cream is real ice cream. Jus tlike made at home when I was a kid. no preservatives, no algae(some ice creams are made with algae). and no need of a bunch of facy add on flavors. but if you want the best treat---get some raspberries, mash them and put thru a sieve so you just have the pulp and juice and pour it on the vanilla ice cream---heaven
2. the subs, made with Boars Head
3. the fresh made pizza dough in their bakery. Took them a while to get it right at the local Publix but it is top notch. Built an add on to the house a couple of years ago...combination brick grill, smoker, pizza oven that has doors inside the kitchen as well as thru another set of doors on it from the patio. Burns gas, wood, or charcoal. very controllable temp on it from 180 up to 1500 degrees. Had to go to local mom and pop pizza place to get decent pizza dough but now get pizza dough at Publix.
3. Their made in the butcher area meatloafs, burgers, stuffed pepper, etc. They are well made and basic leaving the ability to dress it up if you want when you cook them.
4. have gotten to know the butchers there and when I shop for a prime rib, ribs, etc they give me well selected cuts.
5. frequent sales on the organic Greenwise ice cream that makes it the same price as most regular name brand ice cream that aren't nearly as good(much better than Ben and Jerry's)
6. fresh onion rolls in the bakery--onion kaiser rolls and some other onion rols that are ideal for burgers.
7. taught some of the employees there how to make Cuban sandwiches...and they've got it down real well.

All Publix bakery items are received frozen, thawed and baked on site. IMO, the bakery is the weakest part of the operation I guess because I grew up on neighborhood German bakery products in NYC. You cannot imitate the quality of a meister baker with a frozen mass produced product. It's impossible.

I rarely buy meats at Publix except for maybe some chicken breasts or pork chops for mid-week meals. Never any choice beef cuts or other meats for grilling. Wards in Gainesville for good butcher meats.

I never buy fresh fish in Publix except for when the Mayport never-frozen shrimp is in. Everything else is inferior to Northwest Seafood and Fresh Market at the fish counter. Publix is very concerned with preventing the fish smell from permeating the store and somehow it effects their commitment to the product.

The pre-packed salads are not very good. Very homogenized, for the average taste buds.

When they started making sandwiches they were great. Over stuffed with meat and cheeses. That changed pretty quickly. Now there is nothing special about them. I do like their Philly cheese though. There is no comparison with Hogan's Heros. In fact I just decided to have a Hogans now that I mention it.

All our beer and wine is purchased elsewhere. They're just too damned expensive, like 30% higher.

Having said all that, we raised our family in Gainesville and have probably spent $250,000 in there over the past 32 years. I do like shopping in Publix for their customer service.

BTW, Trader Joe's has two-buck chuck, judged the finest chardonnay produced in California when compared by world-class wine tasters with the most expensive elite wines the state produces. It's now up to $2.99/bottle, which ain't bad considering it beat out the $60/$70/$80 per bottle stuff.

I'm sorry that was your experience. I know many people who work at Publix. Many. And not a single one has ever told me that was their experience. Not a single one. Quite the contrary.

And they seem to attract the best workers. They get these young guys who come in after school and are awesome in their customer service. An on the other hand, in mornings when the the young guys are in school they have the older, retired men to help out in customer service.

When I go up North every year to Ohio for Memorial Day time to spend with relatives, I have to go to Krogers or other stores, and I realize how blessed we are in Florida to have Publix! Those other stores are a million miles behind Publix!

No doubt one of the best benefits being retired and living in Lakeland is that it is the hometown for Publix! :)

I'm never more than 5 minutes from one! And where I live on South Florida Avenue I have a Publix just 1 mile north of me at South Gate. Another Publix 1 1/4 miles south of me at Lake Merriam Square. Another Publix just 1 1/2 miles west of me on Harden Boulevard near Lakeside Village. There are some things in life that are great! :)

When I was a kid growing up in Miami, we didn't have Publix stores down there then. When I was in the 10th grade, Publix built there first store there, Coral Way and Galloway, about a mile from us. When my Mom learned they was going to be a Publix near us, she was all excited. She had already known about them somehow. Of course as a teenager I didn't know what the big deal was! Just another grocery store, right? Right.

When built, shoppers there might well think they've walked into a Greenwise store. It'll have a sit-down cafe and loads of fresh-made foods and organic produce. But the new store will take the upscale concept further in its inventory and design. <<

Publix Is In Good Position For 2013

2012 Was Marked By Growth And Innovation For The Supermarket Chain

>> Publix Supermarkets, Inc. appears to be on track for a very successful 2013.

That was the prevailing message from supermarket and retail experts interviewed by The Ledger to discuss recent Publix ventures and the company's prospects for 2013.

Lakeland-based Publix is scheduled to release its 4th Quarter and full year 2012 financial results Friday. Looking back, 2012 was another year marked by growth and innovation for the 83-year-old supermarket chain.

Publix raked in a profit of $1.2 Billion in the first 9 months of the year, up 6.1% from the same period in 2011. Sales through the 3rd Quarter increased 3.9% to $20.5 Billion.

Publix debuted in the Knoxville, Tenn. market in 2012 and announced an expansion onto the state of North Carolina, the first such expansion since Publix entered Tennessee more than a decade ago.

The company continued to experiment with its store formats and began testing an online deli ordering system in select locations. Locally, Publix opened the area's first Aprons Cooking School at the Lake Miriam Square store in Lakeland; the store also is the first in Polk County to include the Aprons Event Planning service.

More recently, Publix has deepened its push into social media by formally joining Twitter earlier this month, and is currently in the process of rolling out a digital coupon system across all stores.

Things are looking bright for Publix in 2013, according to the experts contacted by The Ledger, though they say Publix and other grocers will still have to deal with myriad economic pressures.

"Publix is sitting really good right now. They've stayed focused." - David Livingston, DJL Research.

"Not every chain is growing, I think it says something that Publix is still finding ways to grow, both in their own territory in Florida and the Deep South. They're one of the companies that has consistently been growing otganically in new markets." - Jon Springer, Retail Editor for Supermarket News. <<

Nothing close to it in the Chicago area. Treasure Island and Whole Foods are too expensive. Got TJs everywhere, but it's not a stockup place. Best thing I have is a big family owned Italian green grocer and butcher that took over the space that Circuit City used to be in. They're more general ethnic now, great produce, meats and fresh bread, but the national brand stuff is way to expensive.

Keep hearing that Publix is on their way up here, but still no sign of them. They would kill Dominics and Jewell.

Nothing in Arizona compares to Publix. Safeway and Fry's (Kroger) are ok. Whole Foods is just too expensive. We usually do our weekly shopping at Sprouts, which is Whole Foods Light. Similar concept, but not outrageously priced.

Did for years. Now live in Gilbert. When I lived in Tucson, loved shopping at the 17th St. Farmer's Market. Still stop in when we get the chance.

I use a combination of Sprouts, Trader Joes, Whole Foods and Smiths for the most part. I like Sprouts, it has a little more than TJs and a little less than Whole Foods. But its kind of out of my way so I dont go there unless I need something specific that I know they have.

I was gonna say, who needs a Publix when you have St Mary's for tortillas, tamales and carne seca?

I wish Publix would make another Gators cereal box. I haven't seen a new one in years.

Publix now has digital coupons, which should enhance their popularity. Customers in the store were raving about how cool and easy it is to use to them.

Or the Gators ice cream flavor they had a couple of years ago at the start of the football season.

It was a funny experience really. It was at the start of the football season and Publix, being clever like they always are, had a Gators ice cream flavor and a 'Noles ice cream flavor. So of course when I was in Publix and saw it, I bought it. The Gator one, of course. I called my sister-in-law after I left Publix and told her about it. With so many Gators in Polk County I knew they may sell out fast. And I wanted to make sure she and my brother got one. She asked me what the actual flavor was for the Gator ice cream. I told her I had no idea. It said "Gators" on it and that's all I needed to know!

Just 2 days later I went back to the Publix where I bought it. I was curious so I went by the ice cream section and sure enough all the Gator packages were gone! I asked one of those young guys that work at Publix, and know everything, if there was anymore of the Gator ice cream? He said, "No, sorry sir, we're all sold out of it." Now what was really funny was the section that had the 'Nole ice cream packages, was still stocked full! Maybe Publix sold one or two of the FSU flavors, but that was it! :)

LaSpadas are the best. Publix is not far behind, but LaSpadas are in a class by themselves.

Two different sandwiches imo, Publix owns cold subs, but Firehouse does hot subs. Publix vs Jimmy Johns may be a more appropriate comparison.

All are good either way

You can get any Publix sub pressed and therefore hot and still better than firehouse hot or cold.

Do yourself a favor and get a Publix London Broil sub and/or London Broil Philly.... You will never look at Roast Beef the same again.

Also at the Publix at Lake Miriam Square near me, which is very much larger than your ordinary Publix, has Chinese food dinners also. In addition they have an eating area there with tables and chairs so you can eat there if you want to. So at times when I get in the mood for Chinese food to eat, I order what I want and eat right there. They also have WI FI so with my iPhone 4, which I'm using right now, I can check GC.

And I need to make a confession because I did something today that I should not do. I went to the Publix mentioned above to buy a couple of things. Problem was I went there when I was hungry. Really, a long time ago I learned that I shouldn't go to a Publix store to grocery shop when I was hungry. Always go after you had breakfast or lunch etc. Unless, of course, I planned on eating there or getting take-out.

Well, I went into the Publix and smelled the bakery was in action. So I thought I would just go by the bakery for a minute, just to check what was going on. That was my 2nd mistake. A nice young lady was giving out free samples of the red velvet cake! Well, one sample wouldn't hurt, right? Boy, was it good! Now mistake #3, It was on sale! And not only that, today if you bought one red velvet cake you would get a second one free! I fell for it.

So I get 2 red velvet cakes, go to the checkout counter, and head home. Then I get home with the 2 red velvet cakes. Then after I'm home I realize that I forgot to get at Publix what I went there for in the first place! It's all the red velvet cake's fault!
