Israeli minister warms to choice of Hagel for Pentagon
By Dan Williams Reuters – 6 hrs ago
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A senior Israeli diplomat has given a positive view of Chuck Hagel's nomination as U.S. defense secretary, though some commentators in the Jewish state expressed worries that the choice could open a new fissure in bedrock ties with Washington.
U.S. President Barack Obama named the former Republican senator for the Pentagon post on Monday, setting the stage for a confirmation battle with critics who question his commitment to Israel in its struggle with Iran and other regional adversaries.
But Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, a former envoy to the United States, told the biggest-selling newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth in comments published on Tuesday: "I have met him (Hagel) many times, and he certainly regards Israel as a true and natural U.S. ally."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a rightist favored to win national legislative polls on January 22, has yet to comment publicly on the nomination. He has had a testy relationship with Obama, a Democrat reelected in November, though both insist their coordination on Middle East security is sound.
Israel, which receives around $3 billion a year in U.S. defense grants, has at times angered the Obama administration by threatening preemptive war against the Iranians while world powers seek a diplomatic deal to resolve the crisis over Tehran's nuclear programme.

The opposition to Hagel by some on the right in the U.S. has been pretty vocal. From the conservative Cato Institute:
The remaining unknown, therefore, is whether the neoconservatives’ grip over the Republican Party has finally been broken. Kristol and the neocons will argue that Hagel should not be confirmed. Will Republicans, aside from the predictable voices in the Senate’s interventionist caucus, listen?

Good, I'm glad Israel is warming up to Hagel. Because the last thing we need is Israel bombing another one of our ships or trying to pull another false flag on us. They have a well-documented history of that kind of stuff.
You don't want to make the Zionistas angry.

Oh it's sooo great to have Israel's blessing. Now he'll definitely get confirmed.

Not surprised that the world would 'warm' to Hagel. Isn't he the guy who torpedoed Kyoto ?

As ever, "Zionist" remains one of the surest words tipping one off to disregard everything said after or around it.

Pretty much how I disregard any negative remarks about the Palestinians when they're simply fighting for their freedom. I hope they continue fighting and I know they will.

Remind me again why I should give a rats rearend what the Israelis think about one of our politicians? Do we comment on nominations for Israel's government?

Man, I love reading that comment section. I even got a mention!
"A Question for the GOP: Israel First -or- America First ?"

"The Jewish lobby (in the United States) intimidates a lot of people here" and does some "dumb things" that aren't "smart for Israel. "I'm not an Israeli senator. I'm a United States senator." - Hagel
I'd vote for him for president.

Agreed.
But your Israel viewpoint is exactly what the GOP has a problem with in Hagel
Hagel's like, "I'm American first. I don't answer to them."

Rand Paul wants to cut aid to all Middle Eastern countries, including Israel. I was thinking he was losing his Libertarian edge when he backed Romney but I liked reading this below.

They pander to the Israelis and the "Israel first" mentality because of Zionist supporters like Sheldon Adelson. He even got Newt to say "Palestinians are an invented people." It was funny because Romney didn't say much in support for Israel until Newt folded and Adelson started backing Romney.
The Neocons have destroyed the party and basically put a foreign nation and its interests above its own. That's treason in my book.

All the time. In fact, we comment on nominations to government posts with many, many other countries too.

I've seen us do it with Saudi Arabia and Egypt. I haven't seen us comment on Israeli matters when it comes to "who's who" in their government.

Yes, you've been programmed well to do just that by the very same people you are defending.
Good job.

Unless there are some big skeletons in his closet (and the Pubs know where they are hiding) then I don't see much of a fight. They don't want to take their focus away from the debt ceiling posturing.

I have NO issue with his Israel policy....I think he is an anti-semite.
Calling them a Jewish lobby is offensive and clearly shows us what he thinks.
There is an Israeli lobby.....but a jewish lobby???is he a nazi or something???

I'm not offended at all. Jewish lobby, Israeli lobby, Zionist lobby - it's all the same.
It's nothing to get your yamaka in a twist over.

Yes, and you think I'm an anti-Semite even though my wife and two children - by the definition of both Judaism and the less fussy Nazis - are Jewish.
