Orlando's Wayne Taylor Racing has a couple of new drivers. Ricky Taylor has moved to #90 Spirit of Daytona. Younger brother Jordan Taylor takes his place, and 2012 Indy Car Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay also joins the team with veteran Italian Max Angelleli. They also have new livery with Suntrust decreasing sponsorship after several years.

The LMP's would demolish the prototypes. Maybe that's why they don't want them.

Maybe its because there are no other teams that will spend the money it takes for the change to an LMP1. ALMS had very few cars other than GT. DPs demolish GTs, do you still want GTs?

No, the GT's are basically bought-from-showroom and then *detuned* for racing. you have to remember that I'm an old Can-Am and Le Mans pre-chicanes guy. Next to that, cars these days are gerbil-powered.

GRAND-AM: Teams, Drivers Weigh In On DP-LM24 Talks
For Starworks Motorsport’s Peter Baron, who celebrated on the top step of the LMP2 podium in 2012 following his team’s class victory, returning to Le Mans, but with a DP, would also be something special for the longtime GRAND-AM entrant.
"I think the cars would be very good there,” Baron said. “The DP car's strengths are more straightaways than turns, so that would cater to Le Mans for sure. It would be very cool to do that.
"If we could have a proper race with a fair amount of cars swapping for the [class] lead, it would be a great way to introduce American DP racing.”

New Smyrna Speedway and Orlando Speedworld are now Nascar sanctioned tracks. Orlando was just sold last week to Ozzy Moya, who becomes the first Latino Nascar track owner. Robert Hart has done a great job with NSS, repaving it not long ago brought a lot of Nascar teams for private testing because of the rules and it being a non Nascar track. That will now change to hosting Nascar races, like K&N Pro Series and keeping the World Series of Asphalt during Speedweeks as one of the premier short track events in the USA.

What a weekend. My friends won Friday in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series race. Billy Johnson, teammate of Jack Roush Jr, won in the GS class #61 Mustang. Lara Tallman and Vesko Kozarov won ST class in the #33 Skullcandy Nissan. Congrats to Billy and Lara and their co-drivers. Saturday I saw AJ Foyt while leaving pit road before the race. He just happened to be walking next to me, and was nice enough to snap a photo with me after we were behind the wall. It was great to see him because he was supposed to be Grand Marshal last year but had to cancel because of surgery/health reasons.
Took over a thousand pics, might post some after I sort the 20 good ones out. Saw Jordan Taylor's hand after the race this afternoon- Blistered to pieces. He finished 2nd. Ricky Taylor was 5th in the Spirit of Daytona car. Weather was perfect all weekend.
Now it is Nascar season.

Martin Whitmarsh has warned that there are too many pay drivers in Formula One
http://en.espnf1.com/mclaren/motorsport/story/100576.html
A number of teams have employed drivers with financial backing behind them as budgets remain tight towards the back of the grid. Whitmarsh believes the current situation means there are drivers coming in to the sport who are not up to the job, while more talented but less well funded drivers miss out.
"I think, personally, it's sad to have so many pay drivers in Formula One," Whitmarsh said. "The numbers have crept up, and while I'm sure it's good and exciting for those that can afford it, you would hope that in the premier form of motorsport worldwide that you wouldn't have to have pay drivers and that means there are some good young, professional drivers who can't get in and aren't getting in.

Nice! I'll cheer for him. Solid truck and team there. For many years, the trucks were absolutely the best event of Speedweeks. I saw Bodine's scary wreck right in front of me. Saw Rick Crawford win on the last lap in 2003, one of the best finishes I've ever seen anywhere. I saw Mark Martin finally win here, in a truck. Speed, if you know anybody at NASCAR with some real pull, please tell them to do something about their website. The new look is an absolute abortion and in no way is it any improvement over previous iterations of the site. If you think this is just my opinion, just go to the web site and go down to the comments on the front page. They are all in agreement about just how bad a mess they made this year. As an indicator of how bad it is, one day after that race last night, see how long it takes you to find the full results of the race.

Kyle Larson was 2nd in the ARCA race Sat at D.I.S., then won Sunday night in a pavement USAC midget at New Smyrna, then caught a lot of flak for his last lap win Monday in Battle at the Beach, then was 2nd in the Modified when he missed a shift on a restart and got wrecked. It was his first New England Mod race I think. He was top 5 in the K&N Pro series until a late skirmish, still finished 10th.
That's 5 different series races in 4 days for the kid. Whew!

nasczar strikes again fining drivers for honest replies. Its a wonder they give so many interviews nowadays because the censorship is absolutely ridiculous. He said nothing wrong, I was watching when he answered. He wasn't insinuating anything negative or detrimental.
“I didn’t have much all day. Honestly the pit crew and Darian Grubb carried us today. It is just so hard to pass. You’re going to hear it a lot this week. We’ve got a lot of work to do to get these cars to pass each other and things like that,” Hamlin said after climbing from his car Sunday. “Really, aero-tight is a huge, huge deal. The tire is so hard and the surface is new. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when we get to some race tracks with a little more tire wear.
“Really you could drive a whole race on left-side tires. It’s not supposed to be that way.”

You can try to kill a guy on track without penalty, but don't let Nasczar find 1 of your 8 connecting rods too light.
TRD Statment on #20 penalties: TRD Statement: "During NASCAR's routine post-race tear down of Matt Kenseth's race-winning car and engine from Kansas Speedway, one of our engine connecting rods weighed in approximately three grams under the legal minimum weight of 525 grams. None of the other seven connecting rods were found to be under the minimum weight. We take full responsibility for this issue with the engine used by the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) team this past Sunday in Kansas -- JGR is not involved in the process of selecting parts or assembling the Cup Series engines. It was a simple oversight on TRD's part and there was no intent to deceive, or to gain any type of competitive advantage. Toyota is a company that was built on integrity, and that remains one of the guiding principles of the company. The goal of TRD has always been -- and will continue to be -- to build high-performance engines that are reliable, durable and powerful, and within the guidelines established by NASCAR."(TRD)(4-24-2013)
Kenseth's engine fails post race inspection UPDATE - penalties; team will appeal: The engine in #20-Matt Kenseth's race-winning car from Kansas failed inspection at NASCAR's Research and Development Center. NASCAR officials were discussing Wednesday what penalties to levy against Kenseth and Joe Gibbs Racing, multiple people familiar with the inspection told the AP on the condition of anonymity because no decision has been made. The engine failed because one of the connecting rods not meeting the minimum weight requirement. Kenseth drove the #20 Toyota to his second win of the season Sunday in Kansas. It is standard procedure for the race winning engine to go back to Concord for a thorough inspection. The JGR engines are supplied by Toyota Racing Development out of Costa Mesa, Calif., but NASCAR would hold the team responsible for any infractions.(Associated Press)(4-24-2013)
UPDATE: Penalties have been handed down to the #20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team as a result of rule violations discovered in the post-race engine inspection April 23 at the NASCAR Research and Development Center. The #20 car was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-5.5.3 (E) (Only magnetic steel connecting rods with a minimum weight of 525.0 grams will be permitted; connecting rod failed to meet the minimum connecting rod weight) of the 2013 rule book. As a result of this violation, NASCAR has assessed the following penalties:
• Crew chief Jason Ratcliff has been fined $200,000 and suspended from NASCAR until the completion of the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship points events (a period of time that also includes the non-points NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
• Car owner Joe Gibbs has lost 50 championship car owner points; the first place finish from April 21 at Kansas Speedway will not earn bonus points toward the accumulated aggregate car owner points total after the completion of the first 26 events of the current season and will not be credited towards the eligibility for a car owner Wild Card position; has had the owner's license for the #20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car suspended until the completion of the next six championship points events, therefore being ineligible to receive championship car owner points during that period of time.
• Driver Matt Kenseth has lost 50 championship driver points; the Coors Light Pole award from April 19 at Kansas Speedway will not be allowed for eligibility into the 2014 Sprint Unlimited; the first place finish from April 21 at Kansas Speedway will not earn bonus points toward the accumulated aggregate driver points total after the completion of the first 26 events of the current season and will not be credited towards the eligibility for a driver Wild Card position.
• The loss of five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Manufacturer Championship points.
(NASCAR)(4-24-2013)
UPDATE 2: Joe Gibbs Racing Statement: Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) is aware of the penalty issued by NASCAR today regarding the engine in our #20 car used in last week's Sprint Cup Series race in Kansas. It is our understanding that one of the eight connecting rods on the engine was ruled too light. We are working with our partners at TRD on this issue. In the meantime we will plan to appeal the penalty.(JGR)(4-24-2013)

As a result of this violation, crew chief Joel Shear has been fined $10,000 and suspended from NASCAR competition until the completion of the next four NASCAR Camping World Truck Series events. He has been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

R.I.P. Dick Trickle
I remember one time he wrecked a modified off turn 2 at New Smyrna. It hit the wall so hard it shook the ground I was standing on by the back gate. I was first to him, and he was ok. The engine block was cracked into pieces. A couple minutes later he leaned inside the car, supposedly to put it in neutral. Later on Dick said he thought he was gonna puke, and didn't want to do it in front of all those people that came on the track.

24 Hours of Nurburgring was last weekend. American Leh Keen drove a Porsche 997 GT3 R in the rain like no one has ever seen. 2 videos here, first the in car footage, then one with Leh being interviewed about the race (16:00 into the show they talk about the "rain dance") .
Amazing, and I mean AMAZING skills driving at night in heavy rain.

I'd love to see these come to Fla. They race on tracks similar to those used for swamp buggy races. 0 to 80 in 3 seconds, more horsepower than Nascar.

Kyle Larson took 3rd on The Dirt Track at Charlotte in the World of Outlaws race Friday night, then 4th in the Nationwide race Sat. night just ahead of Sunday's winner Harvick. Larson was the only Nationwide regular in the top 5. He was also 6th at Darlington a couple weeks ago. You don't see many rookies get top 10s at Darlington.

Dominant Larson Conquers Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. 6-6-2013 — Kyle Larson drove to victory in his fourth straight start in the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series.
Larson led all 30 laps in Keith Kunz Motorsports’ Toyota-powered Bullet to take the checkered flag by six car lengths over Darren Hagen, but it wasn’t without an anxious moment. Exiting turn four on the 15th lap, Larson bounced off a lapped car that had spun.
Larson triumphed over a 49-car field of outstanding talent and accomplishments. Hagen was the USAC Honda National Champion a year ago and third-place finisher Brad Kuhn of Avon, Ind., is a two-time POWRi National Midget champion.
Others in the feature included multi-time New Zealand and Australian Midget champion Michael Pickens, who finished seventh, USAC Triple Crown winner Jerry Coons Jr., who finished eighth, and NASCAR Nationwide regular Justin Allgaier, who finished 18th

Fox and Yunick had a long-running feud, and they somehow decided to end it by letting each other's son work for the other one. Smokey Jr. would work for Fox, and Ray Jr. would go to work in Smokey's shop. And that was so funny because they fought with each other all the time but both managed to teach each other's kids quite a bit. I remember asking Fox one time, "Where's Raymond Jr.?" And he said, "He's over at Smokey's." So I asked Fox if he had him out stealing secrets or something, and he answered, "No, we've decided to trade sons." And I thought that was one of the more interesting things I've ever heard in my years of racing.
.....
So I asked Fox, "What's the biggest carburetor you've got?" And he looked at me like I'd asked him to go into the gold mine and show me where the vein was. Well, finally he went and brought a carburetor out that you could swim in, it was so big.
Well, we put that big carburetor on, and Baker got in the car and ran without knowing what we'd done. He ended up going around Daytona at almost 200 miles an hour which was significantly faster than qualifying speeds at that time.
I can remember guys in those days would come back in after making a lap at Daytona and being absolutely scared white. But Baker was fearless, and when I told him how fast he went he said, "No I didn't." I told him it was the truth and what we had done with the carburetor, and he said, "Well, it didn't feel like it. Tell Ray to go get a bigger carburetor."
Well, Fox heard that and he got mad as hell because that was the biggest carburetor he had and he couldn't stand to let Baker win!
