Anyone know how to upgrade the OS on an AT&T Galaxy s3 to the new Jelly Bean? I've read that it's out there but I can't figure out how to upgrade.

Thanks,

Thanks. I tried this last night but I must have done something wrong. I didn't get an option to update. I'll try it again..

I've connected my mac to my galaxy s3 via Kies but it still doesn't give me an option to update. I'm not sure where I'm going wrong. LOL I'm sure it isn't that difficult.

Let me reach out to him tomorrow and see if this is a known issue that I just haven't heard about. As soon as I hear something ill let you know.

Does Kies even detect the phone? I mean, does it show up there and you can navigate through the library, photos, etc?

Yes it does. I just don't see any options to update to Jelly Bean...

This is why you should not buy any phone but stock Android / Nexus devices.

It's probably my mac revolting because I ditched the iPhone.

Are you at the most recent version of Kies? Also, in the Kies options somewhere there should be a firmware upgrade button. Try to manually force it that way.

Give me a second and ill post the link. I had the same trouble the other day with one of my employees but we got through it. It's a issue with Samsung right now that they are aware of. Your Mac shouldn't be causing the issue.

Pretty strong point for getting a Nexus. My 2 year old nexus has had 4.2 for a few months. Got a alert on my notification tab and downloaded it instantly.

Isn't it more of a carrier issue than device?

That's the point. You can buy a stock phone direct from Google, a nexus. It doesn't have a carrier so you get the updates as soon as they come out and they are not loaded with the carriers junk.

Not all updates have to do with the carriers.

Have to disagree here. I'm pretty happy with my unlocked and rooted Note 2 running Beans' Rom. I liked my previous Galaxy Nexus but the Note 2 is superior. I'm on Verizon, FWIW, so the Nexus 4 isn't an option.

Even with the Galaxy Nexus, updates didn't come right away. Generally at least a month before Verizon would release an update, and just about all of the AOSP/AOKP ROMs had little annoying bugs that just weren't there on the official Verizon releases.

I think I will just wait until it's available over the air or when Kies is fixed. I would probably screw it up otherwise. LOL

I've been through tons of custom roms and none has really matched the elegance of stock Android.

Maybe not OTA, but you could install the latest version the minute it was released.

Beans' GNII ROM pretty much blends all the good and elegance of stock android with the enhancements and S-pen functionality of touchwiz while removing the drawbacks. With stock android you lose a lot of the S-pen functionality. the ROMs I typically ran on my nexus were the latest OTA leak or dump but rooted, deodexed, zipaligned, and busyboxed with a couple of tweaks such as unlocked tethering and the extended power menu.

Yes but on the Verizon version, a few things wouldn't work and others wouldn't work as well as with the OTA ROMs. It was always a bit of a compromise if you wanted the absolute latest.

Finally got Jelly Bean to update on my Galaxy s3 via Klies. Updated the firmware by connecting via WiFi to Klies.
