Microsoft previously would support "downgrading" licenses to an earlier version

Can you downgrade to windows 7

PC World article - not sure if the one above would work on your system - looks like that was for a clean install over windows 7

the article has more

doesn't look good - need install media

I installed this after I installed Windows 8 as an upgrade. I am using Windows 7 desktop (no metro), and you can change to Windows 8 anytime if you want to.

It's been working fine for me for quite a while.

I had no intention of using it, but we ended up testing it out at work and I've actually enjoyed using it. It took about a week to get used to the look and feel (and the Start menu, formerly called Metro). But, I spend VERY little time in Metro, and have pinned all of my favorite applications to the taskbar. I learned a few cool shortcuts as well for finding other things (the Window key is your friend BIG TIME in Win 8). I'd say I'm more efficient at using 8 now than I was 7.

So how is Windows 8 for basic things like surfing the web, creating Word docs (it includes Word?), Notepad docs (it has Notepad, which I use for web page coding?), and other document programs like First Draft (for screenplay format)? That's what I use my Windows XP for. (No games, photography programs, TV or other such entertainment.)

Windows 8 is virtually the same as Windows 7 for the items you listed. It does offer both a desktop and 'Metro' IE. The latter is very much devoid of 'chrome' which gives more space for the pages being displayed but doesn't show objects like the address and other bars.

SSD + Win 8 or Win 7 = Awesome.

Seriously, I believe an SSD is the best upgrade you can make to a computer these days.

I'll probably upgrade my b/u desktop to Win 8 to see what the fuss is about.

i bought a 12" macbook air, last generation, for 700 bucks.
i use web based software all day at work, carry the thing in and out of 6-10 stops a day.

its light, battery lasts forever, feels solid, and right out of the box it was easy to use.

i wanted to see what all the hubbub was about re apple products.

if windows 8 looked like previous versions it would have helped, but they wanted some desktop/mobile hybrid thing that takes some getting used to and i didnt have the time or inclination to be their guineea pig.

I'm surprised that Win 7 is more expensive to buy than Win 8!

This, absolutely. This one here is the best I've seen so far. But I'd like to try out the REVO drive next.

By the way, if you buy from Tiger direct they will tax you and spam your Email to death. I since switched to Newegg.

Tiger only taxes if you live in Florida (or Texas, I believe) because they do business in the state.

I don't really mind the ads from Tiger all that much. Of course I like Newegg too but I usually buy from Tiger.

Yep, CompUSA is their brick and mortar store in state.

Only Florida and Texas has them?

I did extensive price comparison shopping between the two when I built my last computer/rig and Newegg was cheaper 8 out of 10 times. That was before taxes.......... and all the spam.
