View Full Version : Calipari on the Gators

Per a UK beat writer, per Brockway, Cal was asked about the Gators on his call-in show recently and his response was that Florida would "beat us by 35 points, maybe 40..."
There's really no sense debating this right now - as its not really debatable, but I figured it was worth noting anyways.

Kentucky's young players should be improved by the time we play them.

SOS: Alabama could beat some NFL teams. Suddenly they lose to aTm.
I see what he is doing.

Every coach is sending multiple messages when they make statements like this, no question. However, he was asked about top SEC teams each of his first three years at UK and never made statements at all like this one. I wouldn't have bothered posting it if I thought it was entirely coach-speak.

Im sure he's just trying to motivate his team. But if we played them right now it would be somewhere between 20 to 30 points.

40 is a bit much...I'd go with 20 at home and 5 on the road....at this point in time...

You are free to interpret it any way you like. But please don't condescend. 40 points? He doesn't believe that and neither do you.

Not trying to condescend (see how it looked that way though). I'm not trying to say I have Cal figured out more than anyone else - just saying what I've seen of him this year compared with the previous three.
No, I don't think he means literally 40 points and I doubt anyone does. I think he's trying to communicate that the teams aren't close right now and the score wouldn't be close either. Also think he's speaking to his players (through media obviously) when he says something like this.

All I care to say is rhat the Gators will beat UK whenever and wherever they play.

Exactly. Many coaches do these sorts of things for their own team's sake, but there is a grain of truth to the statement. Florida wouldn't win by 40 obviously, but their veteran team certainly seems to have gotten their act together much faster than UK's young squad. I believe he made a similar comment last year about UF raining threes on UK. Indeed it was a valid concern at the time, even if it didn't end up mattering.

I think most of Calipari's talk early this season is to try to get his young team to understand that winning in college takes a little more than just signing a UK NLOI. He may also want them to understand they are not as talented as last years group and that thus they must work even harder.

I'm pretty sure it's a well-known running joke at this point that Calipari calls his team the worst team ever every single year at this point in the season. He did it while he was at Memphis too.

Well, lets see, Kentucky, 45-50 points, Florida 60-70 points.
I don't count 35 or 40 points difference.

while i think we would win a game rather handily right now. . . 40 is a real stretch.
i also think uk will be a top 15 team by the end of the season.

Didn't he say the same thing last year, something like we would knock down 30 three pointers against them?

The comments last year came after some OOC games exposed an apparent inability for his team to guard the 3. Teams were shooting high 3pt percentages against us and Cal made a comment along the lines of imagine what teams like Florida would do against us. My take from that was that if bad teams were giving us fits from 3, imagine what a good one could to. Last years UF team, if I remember right, chucked a lot of 3's.
That was a very different comment from this years. I think part of Cal thought last year's team had a shot at going undefeated. IMO, he wouldn't have honestly thought a team would beat his team.

Florida IS 25-32 points better than Kentucky right now IMHO. We have a long way to go to catch Florida and I'm not sure we will honestly. I love the Gator team!! They hustle their asses off and have a revolving bench of talent and 90% of the roster can make the three to stretch the defense.
I'm not big on excuses we are young bs! The game will be in February and a young team excuse is out the window! This is Caliparis revolving door system which I support but he damn well better figure out how to get us MUCH better in the next two months!!
To beat Fl you will have to go 16-2 or 17-1.

I could see why he would say this. For one thing, it's probably true right now (not 40 points, but I'm not sure a game would be close between the two teams) and for another, why not take the chance to motivate your team?
If I've learned anything about these Calipari run UK teams its to not sleep on them, especially towards the end of the year. I think by the time our games roll around, things will be a little tighter on paper than they are now.

Simple motivational ploy IMO. UK will be fine come time for us to play them. That being said, I (For once) do feel like we have a legitimate chance to beat UK in Gville, maybe even in a moderately convincing fashion (8-10).
If we beat UK by 40, then either UK is really, really not up to their standards or we are the best team in the country. Hard to see that happening.

I agree that it would be hard to see beating UK by 40 points, but I don't think it takes too much imagination to believe the Gators could be the best team in the country. It is not difficult to see the marked improvement from last year's team as though the team is improved from the tournament performance of last year. That should scare everybody on the SEC schedule to be prepared or get embarrassed.

His team is young and talented but don't expect anything spectacular from them this year. We'd win by 30 at home and 15 on the road.

As one of the worlds greatest self promoters he is hoping others will use this later to point out how great of a coach he is.

No doubt that Cal thinks his team needs an attitude adjustment. While I am sure there will be some improvement by the end of the year, this year looks like a "learning" year for Kentucky. The question is will the lack of any quality upperclassmen affect them next year or will the inmates continue to run the asylum?
dailydoublecat
12-13-2012, 09:37 AM
We may have one or two upperclassmen who make a difference next year, but I am not counting on it. We will be pretty formidable next year regardless.
