Another absolute destruction. Not a whole I can say but very impressive overall play by the team. We also seem to be much better prepared this year compared to last. I am sure the coaching staff is some addition by subtraction and addition by addition. Onto the grades...
Rosario, 6: PLayed very much under control for Mike. Provided the spark in the 1st half and remained in control for the most part. Still had a maddening play or two but got the 6 because I didnt see any glaring defensive mistakes. Also did a better job of taking care of the ball.
KB, 4: Just did not shoot the ball well enough from 3 to warrant a higher grade today. A lot of his points came from leak outs. Also had an absolutely horrendous decision at the end of the 1st half. He waived off the screen to take a highly contested deep three. Was he channeling Erv Walker? Hopefully he learns from it and in future games we get a better shot. Reb well again and his def was very very good.
Yeguete, 5: Typical WY game. His positional def is just so good.
Wilbekin, 6: It started off like he was going to play an amazing offensive game but that quickly faded. Offensively he shot it kind of poorly. He had a lot of opportunity running the high ball screen and could have kept shooting it cause they were backing off. However, he only did it once because he was too focused on the pass. Take a page out of T. Green's book and keep making them pay until they defend it properly then pass. Defensively he was a 10. 5 steals and great on ball defense. Also good in the press.
Young, 6: Nice overall game and I finally got the feeling he intimidated the opponent.
Walker, 5: 0-2 from the field but had a very nice shot challenge in the 1st half. It showed good awareness and recognition. Obviously needs to get stronger. Had an open lay up but went to the reverse instead of powering up.
Prather, 4: Unfortunately, picked up 2 dumb fouls that limited his minutes. He is beast on the press with relentless hustle. Offensively he didnt have much of a chance to take guys off the dribble. Fantastic dunk and 3 went in and out.
Kurtz, NG
Frazier II, 7: another fantastic game by Frazier. Reminds me more and more of Ronnie Henderson of LSU fame. His 3 pt shot is fantastic but I am more impressed by the quick release and his ability to spot up off the ball. He creates just enough space. Showed the next phase of his game when FSU ran at him, he was able to put it on the floor and get to the rim. Def was weaker than usual and for the 1st time seemed to be impacted negatively by opponents size.
Ogbueze, NG: As predicted on another thread I said he would not get meaningful minutes. However, he showed a very slick cross over but then paused rather then attacking. Took a poor shot.
Graham, NG: Touched the ball once on offense.
Murphy, 6: Playing injured he really competed physically. 7 reb were an improvement. He looked winded a bit.
Billy, 9: Excellent performance by Billy and the staff. The team was really prepared and he was a maestro defensively. I loved that he went really big with KB 1, Prather 2, WY 3, Murph 4, and Young 5. I think that lineup is tremendous def and in certain situations can be impactful. This was the precise game to try it in and file it away for later. My only gripe is with 8 min left we were up 37 and he stuck with the rotation. No reason in that situation you cant bring in Walker or Graham for a few meaningfull min with other guys who get min.
Refs, 5: The game was a blowout and they kept it in check. Blew too many whistles but FSU sort of makes you.
Announcers, 6: Not a lot to complain about with Len Elmore. He is steady and not annoying. Plus it was a blow out. Not sure how I felt about the play by play guy. He made a couple of bad errors with saying the wrong players name ie Prather for 3 when it wasnt him.
Team Offense, 5: I didn't think we executed particularly well. A lot of our points came off of TO or offensive reb. I think we could have punished them with the high ball screen but didn't. FSU is a good defensive team.
Team Def, 9: Great positionally but fell off at the end (can't blame them). A lot of TO were unforced but even when FSU tried to execute or run sets they couldn't get anything good. We shut down Snaer for the meaningful part of the game. Our press was very effective, our zone was very effective and our man was very effective.
Other thoughts: Man FSU needs a PG and an offensive coach. We know Hamilton can coach def but he (and his staff) sure look inept on coaching offense.
