Jack Taylor's performance left even Kobe Bryant impressed.

The Division III guard shattered the NCAA scoring record with 138 points, hoisting a mind-boggling 108 attempts — or one shot every 20 seconds — in eclipsing the previous record by 25 points....

I remember watching Chris Jackson hang 50+ on the Gators...it seemed like he shot and scored every time he touched the ball, so this (138 points) doesn't hardly even seem possible, but of course it happened. I'd love to watch the video. I'm assuming the strategy is to run and shoot as quickly as possible.

Watching the video, the defense on him was amazingly lax, and his coach told the team to get it to him for every shot. Nevertheless, it's a stunning feat. I couldn't score 138 in a 2-hour layup drill.

kind of tainted. a fake press so the other team could get the quick score and they could get the ball back, sending in freshmen to commit fouls so the clock would stop. pretty weak!

Pretty brilliant, actually. They still won by a huge margin and are a national buzz today. My hat's off to them.

Don't forget the infamous "Gator Flop." The whole Gator defense fell down to allow Miami to score, and thereby get the ball back one more time for John Reaves to set the passing record. Again, pretty brilliant! No one would remember that game otherwise.

It was also against a school that isn't even NCAA, they have less than 400 students I think and are division 2 in NAIA. They did it by turning a team game into a one man show for press coverage, and by running up the score against a clearly outmatched opponent (they won by 70).
It's a classless self promotion at a lesser opponents expense and shouldn't be rewarded.

108 attempts is almost beyond belief.

Personally, I agree with NorthCaptiva, if he managed to get off a shot every 20 seconds, that means that whoever was theoretically playing defense against him must have slept through the entire game. I also wonder if the opponent's coach ever heard of a Box and 1, or a double team.

1. I think this is great. The coach and the player attracted lots of attention for their school and program.

2. I like it when people try to do things differently. It sounds like they basically play the Loyal Marymount system under Westhead. Somehow it was great when they did it but terrible now?

An interesitng article on why this is a sham record. Basically, this school Grinnell has this done this before. They wait till they play a really bad opponent* and do crazy stuff so a player can break the national record. This gives them media attention and gives the coach so much publicity to help sell his books about his system.

I mean, the other team had a player score 70 points on 80% shooting because he was wide open for lay ups. Is that impressive?

Taylor's teammates would be wide open for lay ups from rebounds, but were instructed to pass the ball to Taylor so he could jack up another shot. Sounds petty sketchy to me. I will give him credit for keeping up his pace after taking 108 shots, but his percentage wasn't exactly impressive.

*There opponent wasn't in the NCAA or even the NAIA, they were in the National Christian College Athletic Association, and Division II of the NCCAA at that.

Talked to my wife's best friend last night, who was in town that day to pick up her daughter for the holiday. (Katie plays soccer for Grinnell) They both went to the game. She said it was very strange and didn't know what was going on till afterwards. Ran into Adam and Gabe Levin in Trader Joe's last night. Their brother Aaron was the second leading scorer for Grinnell, hitting five of six shots for 13 points, mostly putbacks from Taylor's misses. He's in the doghouse for taking too many shots.

I mean Pathetic.

You may not know about Grinnel, it is one of the Academically more elite small colleges in the nation.

But this is really baaaaadddd. I mean, it is one thing if a player is really hot and his teammates let the opposition score a time or two so he can get a few more shots, but to do that for an entire game is simply HORRIBLE!!!!!
