View Full Version : Will wind be a factor?

How windy will it be outside for this game with GTown? If it is real windy...it will make the perimeter game that much more difficult. I guess we would have to rely on Patrick down low to get points...how would we match up if nobody can make a three because of windy conditions?

Not a fan at all of this game. Handicaps a team that relies on outside shooting if it is Windy. Also, playing basketball when it is 40 degrees outside could cause injury as guys get loose, then sit and wait, and then have to jump back in the game. Better have heaters and bikes on the sidelines. This will likely be a low post driven game. We'll find out what Young is made of. Go Gators!

I haven't felt like this looked like a Gator win ever since it was announced, because we're a 3-point team (usually) and Georgetown is a layup team (usually). However, it might turn out this season that, because of Eric, Pat, and Will, UF is an inside team primarily. So we'll see.

These games on boats are stupid publicity stunts. Real basketball games have no business being played outdoors, especially in sub-50 degree weather. I don't know how strong the wind will be, but it for sure can have an affect on the 3 point shot.

Wow, what a bunch of p-words
A "publicity stunt". This team needs a publicity stunt! Maybe this will get the students and fans a bit more interested in this amazing program that Billy has put together! We get to play Fricking Georgetown on a Fricking Boat! That is Awesome! Do you think anybody is asking FSU to play on a ship? Georgia? Tennessee? No! Billy D and the Gators against one of the basketball elite. We are there Gator fans! Rejoice! Enjoy it for what it is!

The game is being played on a ship, not on a boat. Boats you play with in your bathtub.

Any of you grow up in the North? We played outside in the cold with wind all the time. It isn't a game changer. I don't think we are looking at 30mph gusts. It should be a good one.

It's possibly the best tonic for Billy Donovan's game-plan he could ask for. The guards didn't look inside before shooting against Nebraska-Kearny...they probably will understand the necessity of that for this game.
Look for big nights from Pat, Eric, and Will.

If we lose, God forbid, someone will be interviewed and asked about the wind effecting their shooting. I hope they don't say yes it did as an excuse. They are playing in the same conditions. I am sure, Billy has told them that.

It was interesting the first time they did it with Michigan St. and UNC. Now they are doing it again and they are doing multiple games on different ships. I just think it's silly.

Bingo. This is an awesome statement for where the program is.

+1 It's basically an exhibition game and great pub. These kids grew up playing outdoors. They'll be fine.

My concern is not the wind, but the unpredictable gusts that blow over ships. It is not as if these kids grew up playing on ships.

Are there any current engineering students taking Dynamics who want to calculate for us how much (how many inches) the wind can move the ball (left or right) or shorten/lengthen a shot during flight? It's been too long since I took Dynamics (over 30 years) and I'm too lazy anyway
I tried googling "wind effect on basketball shot" to see if there were any calculations or empirical data on this, but didn't find anything quantitative.
I did find the relevant story linked below, which mentions that for the Michigan St/UNC game last year, they put up wind breaks to minimize the impacts from wind. I wonder if they're doing the same for this game.
http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/36241/will-playing-on-a-ship-affect-a-jump-shot
The wind used to bother my shot when playing outdoors, but I always wondered how much was physical and how much was mental. :geek:

Of course, you'd have to make some assumptions, including length and time period of the shot and what wind speed(s) to calculate.

Is rucker park a boat with a hardwood court? Yeah, these games are just like playground games.
Its a shameless publicity stunt that shamefully only reaches those with nbc sports network. Sad.

These schools participate voluntarily. I don't think Georgetown, UF, OSU, Michigan State and UNC are the kind if schools who participate in publicity stunts.

I'm not sure why they didn't use a different floor type, or just the ship's deck with temporary lines.
In the future they'll have to play in the daytime, west coast, or use a different court material.

Why? Steel decks with non-skid coating would be perfectly fine. The ball bounces just as well on steel...
