Ok, I've almost finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a console. I know the Wii is all but dead so it looks like the competition is between the XBOX and PS (?). I really liked the concept behind the Wii with having fitness as an aspect of playing. Up until now I've been almost religiously against getting a console even though the NHL and NCAA series games are no longer available as PC-DVD.

Can anyone here educate me on the advantages/disadvantages of the consoles out there?

I have a ps3 and Xbox 360. They are both pretty similar as to what they offer imo. Normally I would say to choose one based on the exclusive content you like more. That might not be the case for you. So a few things to consider.

PlayStation network is free. XBOX live is about 50/yr. Ps3 is also a bluray player. Xbox 360 is not. Xbox has kinect which might give you some of the things you want from the wii like kinect sports.

Another thing to think about is that this generation of consoles may be near it's end. It's definitely beyond the midway point for their lifespan.

Yeah, this would be an odd time to take that plunge.

Both XBOX and PS3 have motion controllers now, so they fill that niche that Wii did. I've never met anyone who played one of those Wii fitness games for more than a week, though. It's a pretty terrible way to get exercise.

Both of these answers pretty much sum it up. I have both and feel the same way. The controller configuration is the only difference as to the gaming part of them. Like they said one is free and one has bluray.

Well the one that is free and has bluray is the same console.

I never watch bluray discs so it's largely been irrelevant for me anyway.

I have a ps3 and bought it because of the blu ray player. From the reviews it is an excellent blu ray player. I use it as essentially a home media server. I imagine that the xbox can do the same thing albeit without the blu ray.

I don't know whether xbox live offers the ability to download free demos of games if you haven't subscribed to it. Play Station network has a lot of free game demos - many of which my son continues to play without buying the entire game. Some are time limited to an hour but most are downloadable content that you can play for the long term if you wish. If the xbox doesn't have that, it would really tip things inthe direction of the ps3.

PS3+Blu-ray > xbox 360: Unless you're a Halo fanatic.
