The simple fact is that males are attracted to a slender waist with the proper hip relationship and a proper distribution of subcutaneous fat (symmetrical), because this is an indication of a healthy female who can deliver healthy offspring.

The research on this topic is very consistent across cultures, with a few rather wild exceptions like Micronesia.

As long as males want to look at females (which will continue as long as humans remain a viable species), then such things as Bikini Basketball and Lingerie Leagues will continue to be created if the promoters can market it adequately to bring profits.

It is much like the Princess/Cinderella phenomenon among young Girls (from which Disney among others has garnered Billions of dollars over the past 10 years or so). When you tap essential Archetypes or primary drives (like making babies), then you are likely to make a profit.

Actually, Themistocles is right and you are wrong. Research (yes, people have actually gotten funded to research this) has shown that it's proportional body shapes that are attractive to men, regardless of culture. A guy in the rainforest of Borneo prefers the same proportions as a guy in Manhattan. It's within a range, of course, and there are individual exceptions.

I wonder why you select flappers and Marilyn as examples to disprove the idea, when they actually reinforce it. Both examples are within the "attractive" range. Marilyn wasn't exactly a hippo.

I have no idea how this falsehood started, but I see it all the time. I think it has a lot to do with how clothes changed to make and old 8 the new 4 so that women wouldn't feel so bad about themselves.

She was a 10 in British sizes which makes for a 8 6 or 4 in US sizes. He measurements were 35-37, 22-23, 35-36. That's a fine woman if you ask me. The world seems to be trending slimmer, and my wife is skinnier than this, but she's a professional ballerina. When I walk around in the real world, though, most girls a look a lot more like Marilyn than they do my wife.

Yeah, I don't think the lingerie football chicks played much more than powderpuff football either, I doubt the ability to assume a "triple threat" position will have the same meaning in bikini basketball as it does in the NBA

maybe not so much as media as marketing. Its a society thing. Our society has defined these women as being hot and we, generally as a population, have accepted it. Now there have been some cyclic trends over the decades, but you could take the hot women from any decade since the 13 colonies, and they would be considered hot today.

Go back further and across the pond and their hot women could be consider portly or fat today. That was their societal norm, not ours.

I guess some of the posters in this thread would say the sociological lesson gleaned from that episode is the reason the Department of Education made them part of cable in the classroom.
