Does anyone know how the 2012 tournament will set up with 14 teams?

Do 4 get byes and 10 play the first day? That doesn't add up.

How does it work with a number divisible by 7 (2 X 7 = 14) since only two can play at a time?


Perhaps this would be a good situation to push for double elimination. That is a real advantage baseball has, those double elimination tournaments, because even the best teams can have off days that occur when a weaker opponent has an unusually strong day. We see this in the NCAA first round all the time.


Even if only that last 4 teams had a double elimination - Winners of first game play Winners with losers playing losers, then Loser of winners plays winner of losers, then winner of winners plays winner of that game, and, to win it all, must lose at most once.

That would be a far, far better way to play it out. And think of all the extra money the SEC/NCAA would make from those extra games. Something that Baseball doesn't generate.

I think the games start on Wed now, the top 4 get a double bye, the next 2 get a bye on wed and play thurs and then the tourney continues like it has in the past.

The men’s basketball tournament has expanded to include all 14 teams and will be seeded 1-14. The tournament will begin on Wednesday with matchups between the No. 11 and No. 14 seeds and the No. 12 and No. 13 seeds. The winners will advance to meet the sixth and fifth seeds, respectively, on Thursday. Also playing on Thursday with be the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds and the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds. The top four seeds in the tournament will receive byes until Friday’s quarterfinal round.

The 2013 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament will be played March 13-17 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

You would need to get to 8 teams after the first games. 8 teams left means 6 losses. 6 losses means 6 games. 6 games means 12 teams. 12 teams means only 2 byes. That would be my guess.

Just saw REM's post. I was WAY off. I need to think about it before I can say whether or not I like what they did.

OK, let me see how this works:

The bottom four seeds (11-14) play in with a Wednesday Game
They then play the highest non-double-bye teams on Thursday (5 and 6) with 8 against 9 and 7 against 10. So the winners of the 5 (against 4), 6 (against 3), 7 (against 2) and 8/9 (against 1) will advance to the round of 8 on Friday, when the 4 top seeds start playing against the appropriate seeds.

Seems like a legitimate seeding and playing method to me, although, if one of the 11-14 wins it all they will do it after playing 5 games in 5 days, with the top 4 facing 3 games in 3 days if they make the finals, and the 5-10 seeds having to play 4 games in 4 days to make it to the finals.

Seems to favor the higher seeds, which appears appropriate to me.

I am strongly against double elimination in a nearly meaningless conference tournament. If a superior team loses, I take it to mean they didn't want to win.

The two last place teams simply shouldn't participate. It's a meaningless tournament that already spans too many days.

I enjoy the tourney and think it has some merit, but I do like the idea of the last place teams being excluded.
