I should think it's irrefutable:

(1) Americans are eating more processed foods than ever.

(2) Americans are living longer than ever.

(3) Therefore, processed foods are extending our lives.

Further, the average American lives to be 81, whereas the average French Polynesian lives to be 74. Therefore, if the French Polynesians were to add more processed foods to their diets, undoubtedly they'd live longer like we do.

i know you're joking around, but correlation does not imply causation...haha.

I'm just saying that fair is fair. If the food fanatics can make bold declarations based on correlations ... so can I!

On the balance, I'd say Thank God! for processing. For one thing, the chemicals they add kill pathogens.

Perused a silly article, by Rod Dreher, in American Conservative today. His premise that Americans need to spend more money on food to lose weight. He reasons that because Americans spend only 7% of their budget on food, and the Europeans 14% (and are slimmer), that we should follow their lead and spend more so as to eat 'healthier food.'

Anything, ANYTHING to avoid asking people to eat less.
