Most football teams have to decide at one point whether it prefers to attack by run or pass. Friday's contest between Davidson Day (Davidson, N.C.) and Harrells Christian Academy (Harrells, N.C.) showed us one thing: either method can prove lethal.
Courtesy photo
Will Grier, Davidson Day
According to Lake Norman Citizen sports editor Justin Parker, Will Grier threw for a national record 774 yards and 11 touchdowns as Davidson Day's air attack defeated Harrells Christian's ground game 104-80.
That's not a misprint folks. Harrells Christian put up 80 points — and lost by three touchdowns and a field goal. Four NBA games Friday featured less than the 184 points piled up by these North Carolina high school football rivals.
The numbers are all unofficial, but if they stand up, Grier will have bettered the previous national mark of 764 set in 2000 by Pacific Palisades quarterback David Koral.
According to Parker, the teams combined for more than 1,600 yards of total offense. Once those are ironed out, that too is likely a national record.
Harrells Christian senior running back Russell Washington ran for seven touchdowns, including runs of 40 and 55 yards.
While astonishing, the pinball score and almost preposterous statistics didn't come as a total surprise.
Harrells Christian entered the game boasting one of the best running attacks in the country, averaging 531.9 rushing yards per game. Davidson Day came in averaging 408.9 yards through the air and 135 on the ground.
Washington had piled up almost 2,500 yards before the game with 38 touchdowns, while teammates Kelly Nelms and Channing Kelly, both juniors, had each rushed for over 1,200.
Grier, who has a weekly reservation in our MaxPreps National Stat Stars list, came into the game with nearly 4,500 passing yards, 54 touchdowns and just five interceptions.
Something had to give — but it was probably the scoreboard operator's fingers.
Davidson Day was in control from the start, taking a 54-36 lead at halftime.
Grier completed a 99-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Seward in the first quarter. Nelms ripped off a 70-yard touchdown run in the fourth for Harrells Christian.
Davidson Day improved to 10-2 while Harrells Christian fell to 9-3. This is the second time these teams have met this season, with Davidson Day taking a modest 46-29 victory in Week 1.
On Friday, each team more than doubled its total from the previous game. Take a look at the Qwixcore game log to see all the scoring — just make sure you don't have to be anywhere for a while.

The biggest no doubt was Davidson Day 6-foot-3, 192-pound junior quarterback Will Grier, who completed 35 of 42 for a national record 837 yards. It was originally reported he threw for 774 but after an exhaustive review of tape Saturday morning it was revealed he went for 63 yards more.

Don't get too excited. I put up over 500 yards in a flag game during intramurals and I played OL in high school.
I sometimes think what could have been................
The level of competition here is more like high schoolers playing against JV. Not saying the kid doesn't have talent, but this is really slim competition here.

Yea, I know how you feel. I loved playing quarterback over at Norman's Field on a Saturday afternoon. Back in the early 80's, one could get on Florida Field and actually play some tag football.
Since my junior high days, I could truly pass the ball with a tight spiral.
I was the "Larry Ochab" of the day.
13 was my favorite number.
I was left-handed and I was 6'5" and I could throw all the passes.
The bomb... the intermediates... the down and outs... the fades, the timing patterns, etc.
Actually could throw a bomb 70 yards. I could get on the 20 and toss it to the other side of Florida Field at the 10 yard line. I was so big and had such long arms I could wing it. And I actually was taught by a former Gator who played for Spurrier to pass it the way Spurrier would throw it.
Don't sling it... keep the ball high, next to your ear, flip your wrist and let your pinky finger be the last finger leaving the ball. Tight spiral. Loved it.
Problem was:
NO COLLEGES looked to me as a quarterback.
My 40 time was not real fast (4.8)... and I was 245 lbs as a senior coming out of Tampa Plant. NO colleges in the land would look at a quarterback that big.
They wanted me as a left-sided offensive tackle (left-handed).
Little did I know that I would wind up screwing up my shoulder later on in life.
I just had left rotator cuff surgery two years ago...because I wore out the cuff in my late teens and early twenties.
The shoulder surgeon told me that rotator cuff surgery is often referred to as, "The Old Man's Condition"... or..."The Geezer Disease."
And it is ALWAYS comes about because of what we did to our shoulders earlier in life.
Bummer!

I feel ya pain Leezard. I was the biggest guy on my HS football team at a stout 6'3 220 lbs. Guess where coach wanted me to play despite being the best passer on the team??
Right Tackle.
I gave up football before my college career really got started. Glad I did. After reading your posts in this and another thread, I can only imagine how much worse my shoulder would hurt now if I had played. Troy State and Maryville. I could have been a contender!!
Not.

A lot of kids threw for the coaches this summer and Will Grier was the 2014 QB the coaches tabbed as their number 1 choice. It seems like a real close race between Florida and UNC I would hate to lose Marquez North and Will Grier to UNC

No question that he's the read deal. Hope he can put on some weight. Really surprised by his running ability. Actually reminds me of Driskel in his running style. Wish the clips were shot closer to the action. It's hard to zero in on his mechanics. Seems to throw off his back foot in some situations, otherwise, he looks very very quick with his delivery.

1) Starter will be a SR or will blow up as a JR and will be an open competition. Head Coach will be sure you have a GREAT OLine and lights out D.
2) Probation and in the ACC
3) No coach
4) No coach and ACC
5) Fun to watch, will be crushed when you play a real D and you will always have to score 60.

He is a really good athlete not as fast as Driskel but he can dunk a basketball.
He does tend to lean back when he throw but I heard he threw great at the private workout for Pease and CWM. He has always thrown that way back to even middle school.
Grier's father is his head coach so he has been schooled well. Much more natural QB than Jeff IMO.

Agree, Grier looks good(great) against HS competition but he's going to need to add 30lbs to have a chance at being durable enough to play in the SEC and that's going to be hard to do. Scout lists him at 6'3, 185, so he's probably 6'1ish 180(maybe). Jeff Driskel IS 6'4 235+ and his size is probably the reason he's been able to handle the beatings he's taken this season.

Give me a break. Johnny Football is listed at 6-1 and 200 and I think they are being generous. He has run for nearly 1200 yards (carrying 18 times for 92 yards against Bama) and, unlike Driskel, has not missed any games with injuries.
As for Grier, even if you want to make conservative assumptions about his current height and weight, I see no reason why the kid couldn't put on 20-30 pounds between now and his first game as a Gator--if that is what he and the coaches want.

If anyone recalls, Tebow was 217 in High School, so young men naturally add weight and 5,000 calories a day + Dillmen = he will be 210lb when he takes his first snap in a UF game and 225lb before he takes his last.

20lbs at least but that's not an automatic. Even Aaaron Murray was listed at 200+ in HS, which was probably generous, but two years after arriving on campus is listed at 210.

But Die, my points are that (1) his weight is only important if he is to have a bunch of carries as a QB (Murray does not), and (2) in any event, plenty of running QBs weigh much less. Tommy Frazier was about 200 pounds. Eric Crouch was about 210. Pat White weighed less than 200.

Those are really CRAZY statistics, of course you get that sort of stuff when there are about 15 boys in a school.
That is, however, really out of sight, sort of like the over 130 points that Grinnel guard scored against an utterly overmatched opponent. These two were not that far from each other, but obviously, their coaches bought the "If you score enough, they can't beat you philosophy," as opposed to the "If they can't score, they can't beat you," philosophy

Will has always said UNC was close 2nd and Fedora is a good coach. I am still interested to see how he feels about the new coaches at NC state and UT. They have offenses he would do well in. I expect him to announce his commitment to the Gators early next year.

Dave Doeren is having his first year at NC State, so they might be mostly out of it. Larry Fedora at UNC might give some competition because he is an offense first coach, seems to have UNC on the right track, and will probably score a ton of points with that offense. They were 10th in the country with 40 points per game. A good looking offense in the Sugar Bowl against Louisville, a team UNC lost to could possibly help. Never know with recruits.

Non-RB Offensive recruits are where i'm a bit worried under Boom, if we don't seriously step up production next season (with the big wr class we have coming in) i'm not sure we can get top level talent consistently, we just don't have film to offer them about what they can do here besides hand the ball off and run block.

Cooper is an elite WR IMO. Saban is still building his program. They want to run between the tackles then play action pass and go down the field. They did that well this year. One piece they still need on offense is a big threat at TE. They will have that next year when OJ Howard enrolls.
CharlesUF09
12-16-2012, 04:43 AM
First, I have my doubts about Cooper being an elite WR. He's only a freshman, in fairness to him, so it could turn out that way. He's not a physically dominating WR. He has good hands, and he gets under balls pretty well.
Alabama did go for more deep passes this year, but I don't think that means you have moved out of the range of game manager at QB mindset (see Trent Dilfer with the Ravens.)
Alabama is a run first team under Saban and with the O-line and RBs they've always had, it's not that surprising. But they had the potential for a very good passing game in 2010 that they hardly utilized. Doug Nussmeier ran a pass heavy offense at Washington though, and that seems to have entered into Alabama's offense a bit. AJ McCarron may get to throw a few more deep balls now, but the base offense is still not as balanced as it could be. Pease's offense on the other hand at Boise was very balanced.
The Florida offense this year was the opposite of balanced though. It was Georgia Tech level of passing. It was what Muschamp had to defend against from Alabama when he was at Texas. For that kind of offense, it really is more of a game manager thing. I'm somewhat concerned it'll be hard to get a guy who throws as much as Grier does when showing him the offense he could run.
You could say receivers, O-line, etc. didn't allow that this year, but I think that's a tough pitch to a recruit. Future promises that all the position around the QB will improve.
Like I said though, a solid offensive performance against Louisville will hopefully make the FSU game less like an aberration and more like what we want to do going forward.

I hear what you're saying, but I can't agree and would actually counter that the exact opposite is true. I work with kids and potential is far, far easier to sell to them than reality. If Grier is looking at the recruits on board, having Humphries as his potential LT, and guys like Dunker, Johnson, Dillard and an otherwise beefy, (by then) experienced OL in front of him, it has too look encouraging. Having Fulwood, Robinson and Bailey around him to throw to and a running game to utilise has got to be another positive.
The pieces are in place. Driskel/Brissett will be Seniors and if he thinks he can beat out "less heralded" guys like Staver and Morninweg, then there's an awful lot to like about the Gators. Having an absurdly strong defense will also be a plus point in terms of knowing he's going to see plenty of field.
He's also a smart, focussed kid. Dare I say it, his athleticism and ability to move makes him quite a Driskel-esque guy - what more credibility can Pease sell to him than to say "Hey, look at what we want out of our QB!" than to point at JD.
Potential is one of the easiest things to sell of all. Grier's not going to be throwing behind today's (albeit much improved on last year...) OL. He's not going to be throwing to the current receivers, except maybe Pittman/Andrades. Even the greatest apologist can look beyond our passing attack this year and sell Grier as the fix to the problem. Reading about his motivations makes me believe that's got to be very tempting. Pease is not a fool - he knows why we ran so much this year but I don't believe for one second he's happy about it. He's selling UF to recruits pretty hard on the maybe, not the now!
CharlesUF09
12-16-2012, 03:01 PM
The thing is, I think he can sell on both with a strong showing in the Sugar Bowl and (since Grier is a '14 guy) next year's offense. The FSU game gave me a ton of hope. We came out passing the ball. We were very balanced that game, and I'm sure a QB would see that and be like, that's a good amount of passing where I could have a serious positive impact.
If we do the same for Louisville, I think the impression going into the offseason is that the way we were most of this year is not what we wanted to be, but it took time to get there (which is a very sensible opinion.)
I get that potential in some forms is easy to sell, especially when you're talking about the potential of the player involved. But when you see Jeff, who was the number 1 dual threat QB coming out of high school, just not getting the chance to pass that much, it's not so much "You can fix this" it's "It'll be different when you're here." In my experience with kids, potential is a lot harder to sell than a tangible, short term, series of goals you can set and make. We can start by showing it with a win against Louisville where we show a balanced offense with a nice mid range passing game and some play action deep balls.

Recruiting is about relationships. Grier has seen this team play all year and up until this point he has the Gators on top that makes me think that throwing the ball 50 times a game does not mean a lot to him. The other schools he is looking at throw the ball more yet Florida is a head. We are not going to put a gameplan around throwing the ball to gain a recruit. This offense will always be heavy on the power run game and then the play action pass.

True, and that may cost us a kid now and again, but the same is true for every system. We lost traditional power backs or downfield receivers under Meyer, just as we would have lost Tebow under Spurrier. It happens. But, as we saw with Brantley, if you commit to a system in your recruiting on one side of the ball, you can't change the scheme because of one player.

I'm not disagreeing with either of you, but I do think it is reasonable to tell a QB or WR recruit that we plan to be more balanced in the future. I do think we will throw the ball more in the future. I think it is not unrealistic to have one of our future offenses have a QB who throws for at least 2,500 yards and even approach getting close to 3,000 yards.

Didn't Muschamp say himself that while his mainstay is to run the football, he wanted to have an explosive offense and big plays, etc? Takes personnel and that is quickly being resolved building on that foundation
CharlesUF09
12-17-2012, 04:13 PM
I think Muschamp would like to run the football, but every coach wants to be able to run the football well. That's like saying every coach wants to be able to have a game without injury. Having a solid run game just makes life easier as a coach. That being said, very few teams can succeed without balance on offense as you will, eventually, meet a team that has an excellent run defense or just has your run scheme worked out and you'll need to pass the ball.
What we heard from Pease about these last few weeks (before FSU) is that his main goal has been to do enough to put enough points on the board for the defense to win the game. What did we see against FSU though? Not that. It wasn't the air raid, but those first few Florida drives against FSU are, what I think anyway, Pease probably wants to do against a defense that is supposed to be very good and an offense that can potentially put up more than 20 on Florida's defense. And what kind of offense is that? A very balanced one. Not just power running and throwing off the play action. Throwing on fist down against man to man coverage using routes that beat man to man (slants, outs) while moving the pocket around. Long, well executed, balanced drives with a nice short-mid range passing game. That seems like the goal to me. Pro style in the way San Francisco is now playing and less pro style in the Tampa Bucs during the late 90s/early 2000s.

Florida loses two recruits after they visit and the world is ending. Give me a break with Florida lost two commits after a visit. The only reason they lost Powell is because Florida had signed two many LB's and he couldn't hang. Robinson left becuase he clearly doesn't know what he wants to do. Last I checked Florida has landed plenty of top prospects this year that have visitied this awesome University. Just wanted to get that off my chest! Come one down Will Grier!

Right on. Noticed that Powell was the lightest of the LBers. Probably saw some of his competition. Roberson is about 17, so easily swayed or even told what to do.

Powell still likes the Gators. He's just open about his current indecisiveness. He's a nice kid, a fine athlete and might still end up being a Gator. He knows that he risks losing his place, but he hasn't completely given it up. As far as his size, we've had two highly productive multi-year starters in recent years who came in at or under 200 pounds. Shoot, Jenkins gained 30 pounds during his redshirt year alone and he's two inches shorter than Powell.
Have no idea what's going on with Robinson, except he's in a tight squeeze trying to make the best decision in time for early enrollment. Could be some family interference. Would love to have him, especially since he'll be available for spring. If we miss, well we only had him for two or three days anyway.
Still hoping against hope that Coley has been getting some first class tutoring and our coaches have quietly remained in his corner. IMHO, even coming in for Summer B, I think he'll be further along than any freshman WR. This kid came out of the womb running a curl route.

Forgot that this was a Will Grier thread. Apologies for taking part in the hijack. My thoughts on Will; if it's down to NC, NC State, Tenn and UF, it's a breakaway slam dunk for the Gators. Let's see how long he remains the #6 pro-style QB and 78th best prospect. The Guinness Book of World Records is probably working on an entry for him. Let's see how long it takes for other stellar class of '14 prospects to start lining up. I'm thinking maybe Thursday.

2014 QB Will Grier will announce his college choice sometime this afternoon. He is a 4 star QB prospect out of North Carolina. This summer Will had a private workout with Pease and CWM, he left with an offer and was told he was the top QB on the staff's board.
Earlier this year Will was a part of an historic football game the final score was 104-80.
Will completed 35 of his 42 passes for 832 yards.
As a junior QB Will Grier threw for 5,785 yards & 69 TDs w/ only 6 INTs. He also rushed for 813 yards and another 8 touchdowns. He completed 78 percent of his passes.
Will Grier's father Chad is also the head football coach at Davidson Day. Chad was Jeff Blake's backup at East Carolina University

Grier will graduate from Davidson Day in December 2013 and enroll at Florida in January 2014, allowing to participate in off-season workouts prior to the start of the 2014 season.
"Will is blessed to have this opportunity and feels so strongly about it that he is ready to commit now so he can focus on his schoolwork, improving his game and helping his team prepare for a third consecutive state championship next year," Grier's father and coach, Chad said. "He has been humbled by the amount of attention he has received from colleges across the country and is very appreciative of the relationships he has established with several coaches. Will is a fierce competitor and he is excited about the opportunity to help Florida win national championships."
Chad Grier said his son's relationship with the Florida coaching staff was a large part of the decision.
"Will is extremely comfortable with (head) coach (Will) Muschamp and (assistant) coach (Brent) Pease, both of whom made him feel as if he will be a big part of the Gators future," Chad Grier said. "(Will) has had great visits to Florida and has been most impressed by the academic reputation, the strength and conditioning staff, the culture of the program, the level of competition both within the program and within the SEC, and the projected 2013 recruiting class. I spoke with Coach Muschamp and Coach Pease yesterday and I am very proud that Will is going to play for men who care about him as a young man and who believe in him as a player."

I'm confident he picks UF today. This kid looks like he can make all the throws AND tuck it and run if he needs to. He's got great accuracy and plenty of zip on the ball. Fits it in tight holes (that's what she said). He's a bit on the skinny side but he's also only a HS junior. I imagine he'll be closer to 6'3 or 6'4 and 200lbs by the time he's in college. The fact he is committing early and said he's ready to recruit for the school he picks will do wonders for the class (assuming he picks UF!).

From what I've read, I don't know if you would consider him a "dual threat QB," but not because he doesn't have the skills to be. I read IAP where the coaches were really surprised at well he scrambled. Also, on one of his highlight videos floating around you get a chance to see some of his runs and his athleticism and I would say he's downright capable, and maybe more of a threat with his legs than people give him credit for.

Some people knock him because he plays at a private school. That isn't a concern to me or most people that know football. He has all the skills that shows he can and will excel at the highest level. The thing here is he needs to add some weight. Kinda reminds me of Tyler Bray from Tenn when he first arrived in Knoxville.

This year will make the fourth consecutive a season the national title was won with quarterback who didn't have a fifth star. Tebow was the last one. You don't need a five star quarterback to be successful. You need a guy with enough talent to run your system effectively and Grier, whether he gets that fifth star or not, fits the bill.

The Tar Heel State has been incredibly good to us. It's almost like some kind of karmic restitution after Steve Shipp.

He's a four star and ranked about 6th, but hasn't been re-rated since that game where he shredded that other team and all the national single game passing records. I don't know if they will be adding a star to his rating or naming a star after him.
This is also big news on the diversity front. I'm sure he's the first Amish player who ever committed to UF. Will he have to travel by horse and buggy to away games? That could be complicated.

My favorite part of his father's quote is that he said "Will is excited at the opportunity of winning national championships" at Florida.
Love the use of the plural there.

Huge pick up for the class of 14. Now lets hope he stays committed.

He will be fine weight and strength wise by the time he competes for a spot. He won't ever be Driskel or Tebow, but I see no reason he can't play upwards of 210-215, which is fine on a 6'3" frame. That's about what McCaron is. He was also listed about the same as a prep.

Our 2013 class isn't even finished yet and we are starting the 2014 with a bang. We have arguably one of the best QB's, top WR and a top DT for 2014 already. All are on the ESPN watch list and probably Valentine and Grier will be in the 150. Way to go BOOM & Co.

Not to mention the first Amish kid with a Twitter account. Will truly is a trail blazer!

This was my prize recruit for 2014. He will play a huge roll in the 2014 class and I believe he becomes a leader from day 1. A year backing up JD and he will be ready for his era to begin.

My prize recruit for 2014. QB's can have a big affect on a recruiting class and Grier will have that affect. It will not be long before he has his 5th star and I believe he will be the #1 rated qb of 2014. His arm should attract some big time wr's. The future is so bright here at UF. Way to go coaches!!

Everytime I see that name Will Grier I think of Grandpa Walton....I know his name was Geer but I'm sure 5 years from now I will still be thinking of Grandpa Walton.

"Grier was the Gatorade Player of the Year in North Carolina and threw for 68 touchdowns and 5,609 yards, a state record. Nationally, only three quarterbacks have thrown for more yards in one year.
But Grier does have one national record. His 837 passing yards against Harrells Christian on Nov. 9 were the most by a high school quarterback in a single game. His team won 104-80 and he accounted for 12 touchdowns (10 through the air)."
No, that highlighted score above is not a misprint. I'm still shaking my head about that score. Are you kidding me? Holy cow!

I'm assuming Clemson is all over the players from both of those defenses??? We don't stand a chance.

Presumably Max understood that we would recruit a QB the year after he signed.

based on a quick look at other site rankings there are no 5 star QB's for 2014 yet. Not that star ratings really mean anything, just thought I would post my findings.
