Ok I took some great photos on our recent trip to California. I took them on my Nikon 40DX. Before we left on our trip, my daughter, who is a much better photgrapher than I, changed my camera settings to RAW.( I have no idea what this entails, but it took beautiful pics). I was able to upload the photos to my computer so I could work with them. I have a basic photo shop program installed, as well as a HP photo program. I want to share them with some family members by attaching them to emails, and on face book, etc. BUT, the computer wont release them as attachments. Actually, I cant clean the photos up or anything. I asked my daughter who told me the RAW photos have to be converted to JIG or a similar format. Well, she said she would do this for me but so far she is too busy doing what ever 20 years olds do, to get around to doing this project for dear old Dad. So, can anybody on here walk me through a SIMPLE step by step instruction on how to convert phots on a computer from RAW to a format that will allow me to clean them up, and to send them out via email attachments or onto facebook?
Thanking in advance.

It seems that raw files can be easily converted to more common image types using a number of tools. It seems that each camera manufacturer has their own raw format so not all converters work with all formats. It does look like Nikon has the best choice.
See this article that explains more than you probably want to but it does list the available converters:

Simplest way in Photoshop is Save As or Save For Web. You'll be able to export them as JPEG or PNG, probably the two most common formats for photos.

I cant open any of my pics in Photo Shop in order to "save or save as". I get an error message telling me it's in the wrong format to open--NEF format. WTH....:angry:How do I reformat from NEF to JPEG or PNG??

I Googled NEF to JPEG and came up with some software options:
Has anyone ever downloaded a software converter(NEF to JPEG), and if so, what has been your experience using the converter? Apparently Nikon offers such a converter, which appears to be a free download.

Shame about that format. My Canon RAW files are happily ingested by Photoshop.

That absolutely 100% will not work.

Guys, I changed my RAW(NEF in Nikon) photos over to gif. That worked via the converter I downloaded from a link furnished by orangeblue. My photos are in Photoshop where I was able to work them up, etc. I was then able to email them and to post them onto Facebook.. Thanks to everyone who gave me help...
Go Gators!
